"That" was a Yakutsk folk song. That special tribal riff was achieved by vibrating the larynx and is something practiced in Kazakhstan, Mongolia and other parts of Asia. Further youtubers have commented that it is used some parts of the Middle East. It is also referred to as a "glottal stop" and used in English when we say "uh oh". A Kazakh youtuber commented: Dimash used singing kazakh technique, that called 'komeymen aytu', You can hear it from the Turan Group. Saha people ( Rus) uses this technique too, they called it 'kylyhah'.

@@НурланТастурганов Erlan Bekchurin was the arranger and found the Yakutsk folk song for Dimash to include in the performance. The technique is definitely part of the Kazakhstan and Central Asian tradition but it is not exclusively from that area. It may also be practiced by Slavs but I have no knowledge of that one way or another.

Dan, this song is fantastic and for the record when you said "what is that?" it was a melisma. Those riffs are often used in the Middle Eastern or oriental traditional singing. So Dimash is used to doing those as it is part of his culture. Dimash is a master at those as well as any other kind of runs. Dimash with his God given voice and years of studying and practicing has mastered total control of his vocal cords as well as his larynx. It is quite amazing to watch. In my opinion there is no singer right now who can compare. He goes from baritone to mix voice and head voice with such ease. His low register is getting richer and fuller and he has not even reached his peak yet! His breathy tone is flawless. If you have not reviewed "Opera 2" or "Adagio" those are a must. Frankly those songs which he sang in the Singer 2017 competition are to me his best renditions.

But i promise you that his performance on “i’m a singer” competition is way much better. He would surprise you with his “runs” which it didn’t happen on the world’s best performance. I think Dimash voice is so clear like church bells .. or birdsong .. so natural, and so incredibly full of human emotions . I'm so grateful being alive same time as he. PS Dan, don't be sorry, your reactions are delightful

I think the middle run was Kazakh technique, it sounded so shamanic and so close to throat singing, Kazakh and Siberian shamanic tones :) Karolina/Poland
