Summary of this Video (1.)"How much time and effort it takes"-Learning a new skill will require a lot of practice (2.)"Passion of Drawing"-One of the most important things because this will keep you coming back to drawing and put in a lot of practice (3.)"You can only improve when you put you pen into paper"-You can watch as much tutorials as you want, but drawing will be the only thing that can help you really improve. (4.) "Other areas of Drawing" Learn drawing fundamentals. Start firstly the basic aspects of drawing. Things like Proportion, format construction, perspective and anatomy for drawing characters, compositions, But it really depends on your style. (5.)"Books and online resources" Really helpful to understand fundamentals (6.) "Learning to draw is a never ending process" Remember to keep on drawing, Be open to new ideas, Learn as much as you can and most importantly, Have fun doing it

Something else I’d recommend to beginner artists: DRAW FROM LIFE. References are nice when you want to draw something specific, but to truly challenge yourself and improve your drawing skills, drawing from life is the way to go for beginners. Photos have a flattening effect that is actually detrimental to developing your skills as it’s already translated 3-D into 2-D when that should be your job as the artist. Draw from observation consistently and you’ll see your art improve tremendously.

I like it, but I only draw from references, I can't draw from like memory cuz I don't know where to start. I'm in 9th grade, and I have art this year, I have always liked to draw, I'm ok but I only draw like cartoonish things, like I don't draw realistic things like people, I attempted it once and it turned out ok but I need more practice and skill to learn about the shading, but even that I got from a reference
@5argan
@5argan 5 жыл бұрын
@@nicolemclean6711 I think she didn't mean to draw from memory, but instead draw from the real real life. Like go out, look at a tree and draw that. Or go out, to the mall, and draw one of the storefronts you can see. Or I guess in art class look out of the window and draw what's there.

Its based on perspective. Dont see it as tedious time consuming work. See it as a passion,the love of your life and what gives you hope and reason for living. Thats when it becomes something so much more than just many hours of work. For example watching movies you enjoy for many hours wouldnt seem like work because you enjoy it. Thats not say making art isnt hard work (its very hard,im an artist myself). But, just change your perspective and look at it differently. Ive changed how i view it and its changed my life. The outcomes of the battles in life are determined by the war in our mind. - J.Sheetz

Kinda true, but school is only 6 hours lol, you've still got another 6 hours until sleepy weepy time right? Or just do what I used to do at school age: treat every, single class, as an art class; cover ALL your workbooks in "high effort doodles" on every damn page. Now you're getting upto 6 hours of practice every day! Keep that up and obviously you're gonna be drawing sick quality by the time you leave school, unless thats next week or something :P

I 100 % agree with your statement about fundementals. I'm still not able to draw 1:1 realistic human head, but I actually drawing the scull like 2000 times, whenever I got bored, made my sketches look much better and even my comic drawing style has spawned from thousands of realistic and manga sketches I've been doing so far. I personally think, that you should do the lineart with an alcohol based pen or just a regular old ink pen. It will make your drawings pop out so much (coming from my personal experience).

Im at the point where anything in my comfort zone looks great...anything outside of it, shit. My main problem is perspective. I can draw damn near anything well that doesn't involve too much perspective, but like a superhero facing forward with one knee up, I just cant get it to look right to save my life. So what I am currently doing is just forcing myself to repeatedly draw something im bad at, trying different approaches, until I can consistently get it right. I drew a lot as a kid through highschool and even started college as an art major, like you, I focused on my comfort zone, but I think I really missed out not finishing art school from a learning perspective in art (not from an income perspective, lol). The thing I hated myself for is I felt I abandoned my life long dream...and kind of quit art as a means to not think about it, had I remained dedicated to doing art in my spare time, I can only imagine how good I would be now. I finally dedicated myself (at 37) to draw every day, even if it is a quick 5 minute sketch. Its just frustrating to have non-artists think you are great and feel like a fraud, because you know you are like the highschool JV team compared to a professional team when it comes to serious artists.

Get yourself one of those artist's mannequins (the wooden figures with all their joints) and just hold it with the point of view that you wish to express in your drawing, bringing it closer to your eye for a more exaggerated perspective . You will see how the forms overlap. They are very useful.

What is the chest shaped like? Screenshot some reference images that are really basic to help you understand what shapes go where

Oh yes, I really can relate to all of this! At first I was real happy when I discovered a that I actually COULD draw - without touching a pencil in over 40years (I'm 51). But after a while that same frustration crept in! I'd expected progressing steadily. But my expectations paralised me totally. At some point I realized that the end product should not matter to me ! I should simply draw as much as I can. THAT, and ONLY that, brings me further. Unsuccessful drawings bear the most learning potential. Repeating a drawing several times (in less time) is hard to do, but very helpful. BUT I hardly get to watch you anymore, which us a shame. But I had to choose between you drawing, or me drawing =o)

This drawing is EXTREMELY complex. I think your abilities are FAR greater than you think they are. You are exactly right. You are always learning. If you like biology now, you are going to love anatomy, chemistry, and physics. Learning to draw is math, but it is the side of math that many people don't think of as math - geometry. The other side of math is numbers. Language is also just like math - dates, locations, quantities, equivalents, etc.. I started as a figure artist, kind of like you, and now I'm studying all this stuff. It's pretty great.

I think there is a right time to explore fundamentals and that time might be different for everyone. Whenever I see these Wish I Could Tell Myself videos, I get the feeling the speaker doesn't fully appreciate the necessity of the order of the steps they took and their journey. You find out about these things generally when you're ready. You get motivated when the circumstances are right. You can't really force yourself.

For whoever is starting, struggling or striving in art I recommend checking drawabox course. If you're interested in a structured approach to art and drawing its for you. If you're just starting it's also for you. If you're an already advanced self-taught artist, it's also for you! It refines what you already know. It fills the gaps of weakness we all have. This course is a legit drawing course and I advice everyone here to check it out. It made me rediscover my passion for art and drawing after years of a relapse I thought I would never recover from. Goodluck everyone and have fun no matter what your skills are at! Strive to be there and don't get discouraged because you can't do it now. Cheers

if you want to take professional drawing seriously you will need to study the fundamentals. i would recommend schoolism [dot] com, they have great courses from big artists in the industry like Craig Mullins and Bobby Chiu. you should also try to copy other artists work but not for the sake of copying it, but solely for the purpose of understanding their drawing process. if you understand other artists work you can incorporate those elements into your artwork. +Dan Beardshaw if you take feedback, the most important thing you should study more is values. don't get me wrong, your understanding of detail is great but with a stronger understanding of values your work will truly shine. i hope this helps someone - never stop learning!

Dont let your Ego and the need to Tell the world now Hard you Worked for this, dictate if you have anything useful to say to people that pursue the same path. Example : Proko and Moderndayjames Both produce very very informative videos along with complex drawings without the 85% of the video explaining their life story when nobody asked.

Great piece. So impressive. You took it seriously. Another inspiration. When I was in high school 15 years ago I really wanted to take-up fine arts but some people discourages me because they say I would just spend money, look at the unsold paintings... I really do not have enough knowledge or done my research about fine arts course. I am a business course grad. It‘s good but now I regret not taking up fine-arts. I believe whatever could hv learned would hv been useful now. My passion for drawing has again flamed up after sseeing art pieces on an FB page and here on youtube. I soon learned that I am a natural born artist. Now, I want to have a training in digital art. I better do my homework. XD

You honestly didn't miss anything by not being a fine art major. I learned the hard way after getting a BFA at a liberal arts college and then working in an art gallery for another liberal arts college. What they teach in those schools is not what will get you a job, or even make you a better artist. All these programs teach is how to be "creative" and how to go against pretty much everything that made the renaissance up until the end of the 1860's impressive. There is a reason the fine arts are looked down upon and called names like "underwater basket weaving." Realism is frowned upon in many of these courses. The fundamentals are not even known to many teachers. One of the only reasons that Art Nouveau and early modernism created some great art is because many of those artists were still taught the fundamentals like proper perspective, line work, rendering, and construction drawing (proper rendering of forms and planes). Those skills and techniques are hardly taught anymore unless you are fortunate enough to attend a top illustration school, technical design college, or get into a program that caters to game or film career seekers, where these skills are needed. I put creative in quotes above since creativity is honestly something that cannot be taught. This is why there is so much mundane and boring work being shown in galleries across the world. I used to think it was because these people chose to paint, draw, or sculpt horrible art. No. It is because they were not taught anything else. Creativity shines when you are taught the proper techniques. I'm glad to hear that the flame is back in your heart. After 10 years of not doing any art the flame is starting to pick up in me too. Like you, I am a naturally gifted artist. I'm just now, at 38 years of age, appreciating my talents and trying to relearn all that I was not taught. Hang in there. If you are truly naturally gifted, then you are waaaaay ahead of almost everyone else.
