I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this industry. But it’s work, everyday there is something new from rules and regulations or needing to update this or that. It’s 100% not a hobby and if you want to grow it takes time, money, and effort. Lots of effort. Dan you are spot on. Great video and appreciate all your support from the beginning.

I think a lot of problems from misunderstanding of a business and hobby, so true!
@thebeardedmackgrooming Жыл бұрын
Early 2019, I was a member of this community with this exact thought. Although at the time I had a little push from Mrs. Bearded Mack. It’s not easy and like Dan said it takes time and dedication. I can also vouch for what Dan says, it’s no get rich quick scheme. No matter the company size, big or small there are many challenges that are faced daily, and that’s not even the amount of time involved. In the beard product industry going from a “hobby” to a “business “ is not easy and takes a whole different level of perspective. I can say that we love what we are doing and continue looking forward.
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
Extremely true on hobby vs business. I believe most problems and complaints come from blurred lines between those two. Specifically blurred expectations not matching the input. You guys are killing it and it’s been fun to follow every single new wrinkle. Cheers to 2023!

Up’s and down’s. High’s and lows. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions lol. You have to be 100% invested in the business. Financially, mentally and physically. The one point you made that I think is key for anyone starting a new company is it takes money to make money. Committing to ad budgets and marketing gets expensive but it is an absolute necessity. Putting in years of research before starting, spending money on R&D that you can’t recoup, developing a strategy and long term business plan, staying current on regulations and guidelines that are always changing. It can be stressful but rewarding at the same time if you’re running your business the right way. Most of all it takes MAXIMUM effort. You have to be all in. Most customers don’t see what goes on behind the scenes of a beard business. So much more to it but you can be successful if you put 100% time and effort into it. You have to make it happen. It won’t just fall in your lap. Great video Dan and thank you so much for all of the support over the years! 🙌

Great perspective, solid points and great way to break everything down. One thing that helped me was taking time to really test the ingredients and products before they hit the market. Testing and seeking feedback are 2 very important aspects to ensure the products you are selling will benefit the customer. I know some may be eager to push out your products when you are first starting out but you do want to make a lasting impression based on the first customers trying you out for the first time. This is why helped my company and brand grow.

Thanks, Dan! I've been "tinkering" with beard butter for a little bit. I mainly just wanted to learn what goes into the products& add to my beard shelf. I bought a couple small boxes of quality materials to make it, and have had a good time making butter...for me. Eventually, I started to sell to family and friends (at a low price) just to recoup my supply expenses (get my product for free, basically). I have a steady flow of a few bucks a month for us to go out to dinner, etc., but my intent is to not get bigger than that. I think, for me, once it becomes a job, it wouldn't be as fun. Your mileage may vary. I could see a couple things besides what you noted. You start by making it in the kitchen, but then you will outgrow it and need a production space. Product/supply storage will be an issue to be addressed, as well. All things I considered, and decided to do this until it's not fun anymore. I would suggest, with my limited experience in producing product for profit, would be to start like I did. Come up with a product that friends & family likes, a few cans/bottles at a time, THEN make the multitudes of investments to build your empire after considering everything. Above all, stay positive, have fun with it, and, listen to Dan, no matter what level you dive into!

If I can offer one bit of advice back, please make sure to get an LLC. When you sell or even give products, you are now 100% liable. You think you know everyone, but I have seen situations turn quickly. LLC’s are quick, easy, and inexpensive. It stops people from coming for your personal assets when/if they sue.

Great perspective, but putting numbers to it would have been helpful. If you want to quit your job and live off say 50k, you'd have to sell roughly 150K of beard products. At $20 avg price/unit that's 7500 units. 145 units/week. Selling beard products is not an easy business to make a living from. Time is the biggest obstacle for a solo entrepreneur, very hard to make product, order supplies, schedule events, attend events, stay compliant, make ads. No more 9 to 5 with weekends off. You have to love what you're doing.

One thing i would like to see from a company, in regards to samples, is 'Scent Samples'.......If i already know i am good with the product itself and i just want to know if i'd like the scent, i may not want to spend three bucks, five bucks, or whatever on a small sample bottle for all of the scents i want to try - it adds up. I'd like to see a company have something like a whole sample pack of all of their scents - something in the form of a wet wipe that you get when you get ribs at a restaurant - It's enough to be able to rub on your skin to see if you like it. Maybe they throw them in for 1st time customers or sell them for a few bucks. Of course, i dont know what that costs and maybe it's not cost effective - but i would think it would be cheaper than buying tiny bottles and droppers, like some do. It could potentially eliminate or lower the issue of having to swap or refund items that customers buy and dont like the scent.
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
The problem is scent changes with carrier blends and especially on skin. The cologne style scent samples are not as effective with beard products. However, doesn’t mean it’s not possible. You have some creative ideas and discussion is always a good thing
@anthonyrallo7012 Жыл бұрын
@@DanCBearded that's the idea of the wet wipe......you soak it in the actual oil and seal it up. The customer gets the actual oil/scent soaked in a small wipe that they can use on their skin to test for reactions as well as sample the scent. Again, don't know the logistics around doing that or if it would be cost effective, but seems like it could be a way to easily get all of the scents to people a bit cheaper......I'd pay 5-10 bucks for a full sample kit like this.
