Lay’s Flying Apsaras is inspired by Dunhuang Dance - a form of Chinese dance which combines traditional culture and modern art.Dunhuang dance draws inspiration from the body movements in the Dunhuang grotto frescoes (such as in the Mogao caves), and the musical instruments and music scores found in Dunhuang, Gansu province, West China. The dance shows the combination of ethnic dance styles from Central and Western China. The dance, itself, is also influenced by Buddhist images and Buddhism. He shot the MV in Dunhuang, China, but was not satisfied with the final result. So he only released a 40 second visualizer.

There was an interview I saw (can’t find it sorry) where he did mention how everything was absolutely intentional and with cultural meaning. Every single move. And the choreo was inspired by the drawings as others have mentioned. This is his goal. Bringing Chinese culture to the world. And he is definitely doing it. I absolutely love Lay so so much. He is outstanding at what he does. And is such a humble and loving person.

if you take a look at the paintings of mogao caves, you will find that many of the gestures and pauses in the dance are similar to the postures of the characters in paintings, which’s really impressive caz it matches perfectly the theme of the song. Lay spent a lot of money (heard that the budget is over a million usd) on the Flying Apsaras mv. He flew 150 staff members and dancers to the desert and a well known world heritage site called Mogao Grottoes, also known as Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, to shoot the mv. The Flying Apsaras are often considered a symbol of the Mogao Grottoes, painted in Mogao caves 1600 years ago. In the dance practice, Lay incorporated many traditional dance moves and gestures painted on the caves. The reason for him to release only 40s visualizer is because, as he said, he’s not fully satisfied with the rest of the mv. I really hope he’ll drop the full version soon, but I respect his decision. As we all know, Lay never settles for less.

I remember squealing with excitement when I first saw this choreo. It's so intricate and intentional. I know there are apsara characters in Indian classical dance as well (common Hindu and Buddhist mythology of course) so it reminded me of the hand gestures in Bharatanatyam. I would love to hear someone of Cambodian dance background comment on this choreo or the choreographer Huang Xiao too.... I find the inclusion of folk and other dance traditions in popular music choreography so inspiring but also there is the ever-present danger of doing it improperly or without respect to origins.

Appreciate your analysis. Always interesting to hear from professional view❤. However, Apsara is just a shared common name to call the celestial beings with Sanskrit word, which is of course the influence from Buddhism. We also have Apsara dance in Thailand but we call it differently. I believe that Yixing’s Feitian choreography gets more cultural influence from Chinese folk dance, and not necessarily from Cambodia. 😊

That's what I've been learning through the comments and I'm so happy to learn so much more! Cambodia kept popping up even though I felt it wasn't exclusive to there so I'm glad so many people were able to point me in the right direction regarding all the historical elements added within the piece! Thank yo!

Nothing to do with Cambodian. It’s inspired by the wall paintings in the caves in Western China, as suggested by the title. Apsaras are celestial beings in Hindu and Buddhist culture.

When I did a search the Cambodian dance Apsaras was the biggest result and common denominator I was finding. I tried to figure out the Chinese equivalence in the time frame I had but wasn’t able to come up with much. Thanks for your added insight!
