Songs used:
- Chucky vs. the Giant Tortoise
- Inspire the Liars
- Death of a Strawberry
- Bloodsucker
- Midnight Crusade

Jon Mess has said his lyric style is centered more around how it sounds when he screams it, then what the words actually mean. He also said its up to you to decide if the lyrics mean anything. Love DGD

One of my favorite things about DGD is - between Tilian, Kurt, and Jonny - every respective singer has a whole different influence on the band sonically. They do such a good job developing a sound around the strengths and the bands dynamics with each singer, while still maintaining that DGD sound. Also, been amazing seeing Jon Mess progress vocally over the years. Cause holy shit, those early days were painful at times.
@Surgles
@Surgles 5 жыл бұрын
Will swan is definitely the reason for that. He also has talked about writing to the sound of the singer so he does his part to match up the kind of style/playing to the vocal stylings of that particular singer.

Thats awesome! I pretty much did the same thing. I got introduced with mothership and only listened to that for a pretty long time but then I had them on a radio once and it put on Carl Barker and eventually Blue Dream as well and then I really went through and listened to almost everything. Its crazy how their sound is consistent on all of their records (probably just because of Will's guitar work and Matt's drums) but yet they still sound like an entirely different band every record as well. Going through their discography is a such a trip but its so awesome. I love the way the band is going with Tillian as well

I love that you found the humor in their absurd lyrics but that you saw the appeal of their musicianship as well. Yes you used timbre correctly lmao. I know I’m extremely late on this. Like 5 months late. But I felt a need to comment because I appreciate knowing I’m not the only person who gets absorbed or enthralled by a singular track to the point I listen to it for days if not a full week without changing the song. Knowing someone else appreciates that kind of listening experience and does so on a semi-regular basis. I remember the first song I heard by dance Gavin Dance was a pure fluke as I was listening to a playlist that feature another band I was obsessing over called Hands like Houses and I remember seeing their name but just kind of ignoring it as I rocked to Monster over and over until I eventually let the playlist go on. When I did I stumbled across midnight crusade. I was instantly hooked. I listened to song after song till I heard Head Hunter for the first time. It became my obsession and has really made me seek out videos and other information on the band. And I think it’s due in large part for many of the reasons you said. But at the fore front it was likely because I was captured by Tillian’s voice. It encapsulated everything I had desired for so long in a vocalist. And while I found a lot of vocalists I loved. He has easily become my favorite. His voice is melodic but still possesses the necessary edge to make him fit in with the genre. So I appreciate that someone else finally put it into words.

I watched this when you first posted it, and since then I have become a huge fan of DGD. There was a time I used to be very skeptical towards poppy sounding music, and I kept hearing about DGD in the metal community. After checking out what I believe was Inspire The Liars I was intrigued, but not all in at the time. This video stayed in the back of my head for a while though, and I think it's the reason I was eventually swayed into enjoying their music. I've gotten to the point that I can enjoy any form of music, which is important for being musician because any form of music can inspire you or teach you something different.

I loved the review, its form, its content, and just the way you explain the topic shows how much you’re at least as passionate as them! Just maybe one thing- i was kinda sad you didn’t mention the music quality more than that but only focused on the vocals. It’s the first video i see of your channel, so maybe there is something i ignore about this concept and it’s done on purpose! But guitar, bass and drums are some of the major elements that make DGD what it is, additionally with the vocals!

Saw tillian with tides of man, we came as romans, and sleeping with sirens..It was 2007, I was 17 and the show changed my life. I played the album Empire Theory (while bingeing DTBM). Crazy thing was I found both bands with in a year of each other and they had nothing in common.. I thought. Both equally meant so much to me at the time. Both were so damn crazy live too. Tillian at th time looked like a cross between a grandma and Kurt Cobain (seriously he did, look it up lol) but made up for it. He took the stage with a baby blue telecaster, all shy and shit.. than boom. This dude was tearing it up! I mean wtf it was the greatest thing I ever had seen. Still is even after seeing DGD with every vocalist, every album. I say all this to come to the realization...Tillian made a good life/business decision joining DGD, but Tides of Man all but dried up. Wish he could have just done both honestly. I’m conflicted. Shit.

I used to think no one could top Jonny Craig. Then I thought I could never imagine dgd with anyone but Kurt. But now that Tilian is lead singer, I seriously think he is the very best talent for the band and is the best thing that ever happened to dance Gavin dance

Honestly, everything you said is the reason I started listening to them back in '06. Well not everything, their production has definitely gotten better as they've gotten bigger (both live and studio). But my point is that's been the magic of DGD. The juxtaposition of Jonny's clean RnB vocals with Mess' screams. Then Kurt's vocals, and now Tilian's. The thing about Tilian's vocals for me is, it's all about the "timbre" as you said haha. The actual melodies and style is pretty basic and poppy. Which is great for them because they keep getting bigger and bigger, but I preferred the uniqueness of their sounds when they had a revolving door of vocalists and musicians providing their own unique sounds.

This video should have way more views on it. DGD is one of my favorite bands and you really nailed their sound and what they are all about. Kudos dude. PS: why did you use blue and red lights in the video? not knocking it cause it does looks cool, but i can't help but wonder why the not so standard lighting choice?
@TheWeekIReview
@TheWeekIReview 4 жыл бұрын
Well thank you! So, the actual reason is that in the earlier days off this channel, I used different primary lights than I do now, and I didn't like the way that they looked during night shoots all that much. Since concerts (especially heavier ones) tend to use intense colored lighting, I felt it would look better than regular white. If I were to do it now, it's unlikely that I would have used the color like this... though I still like the way it looks.

Yea this band became my favourite after spotify shuffled into it after I was listening to another band. Mothership is a fantastic album and perhaps my most favourite overall. But really all their albums from 2015 onward are incredible and Tilian is that big draw that makes it a cut above and all the other members are amazing as well to match him I think (I know he was the newcomer but I haven't gotten into their other albums without him on it)

This is a great review you obviously know what you’re talking about and I loved the knowledge you made sure you had of the band before going into it so don’t take this the wrong way the lighting creeped me out the entire video

Hi Buddy , i first got into DGD by chance it was Tillian singing "Inspire the liars" live and instantly fell in love with the band , After hearing a few albums with Tillain singing lead , i decided to do a bit more research on them and found out that there were another two lead singers which had previously left the band, yes you know Jonny and Kurt, i listened to these albums and just could not feel it, as my job involves alot of driving all of their albums were on my playlist so most of the day that is what would be DGD while driving , over a period of time my taste started to sway more towards Jonny and Kurt , omg now its just reverse roll, dont get me wrong i do on the odd occasion i do go back to Tillian , but i just find them too poppie now , just wondered if you have listened to any of their early stuff , as you seemed to concentrate on their latter music , As i am sure you know Will Swan is the main man behind the band , even doing unclean vocals on Happiness, i could go on but i might be boring you, i could list loads of tracks for you to listen to as i am sure loads of peeps in the comments could do as well , i hope you do a review on the previous albums , you maybe like me just didn't get them at first, but give them time and i am sure your taste will change , sorry to rant on and best of luck , cheers from the UK

I agree with all of your points except the one about Periphery. I saw them live 2 times in the last year, one of which was them opening up for Dance Gavin Dance, and the were the best live band there. Not to take anything away from DGD of course.

I agree with everything you said in this video as I have been a fan of this band from the first down town battle mountain and through all 3 singers. But the one thing you failed to mention is Will Swan, I feal this band would fall into the fray with other bands with out his guitar playing. His rifts are absolutely amazing and is like nothing you will hear from any other band out there. He deserves as much credit as Mess and Tilian if not more because of they way he has kept the theme or tone of the band through there 3 different singers and when he himself stepped up to do the unclean vocals.
@TheWeekIReview
@TheWeekIReview 5 жыл бұрын
Entirely valid criticism, and I Will (HA) admit that I should have given more explicit credit to the instrumentalists in general and Swan in particular since it's basically his band. So, fair enough. Can't do anything about it now though! C'est la vie.

2) wat 1) I'm honestly sorta indifferent to their earlier music. I don't really listen to it much because I just don't like the old singer that much. Another commentor mentioned that he's atypically soulful and deserves more credit than I gave him, which may be true but doesn't mean I won't listen to it without being disappointed that it's not Tilian. 2) No, but really: what?
