She also had hips. I've never seen a ballerina with hips before. In today's world, you have to have a narrow pelvis or you're not going to be a ballerina. There is a definite difference in bone structure between then and now.

@@ae2948 Or a regular/wide pelvis but with little to no fat on it, which gives the illusion of a narrower pelvis. The teacher I studied under was a Russian refugee who danced in the Greek National Ballet in the 60s and 70s. She had hips, was short and curvy. She knew the standards we'd be held to by companies but still refused to weigh us, measure us (except for costumes) and educated herself on the signs of eating disorders. She still managed to turn out several professional ballerinas one of whom is currently a principal at ABT.

I love the speed, energy, and delight the first two versions have. The more recent ones are too slowed down so they can accentuate the moves and long lines. Almost like they're posing for every single movement so much so that the embodiment of joy and lightness is lost

Maximova dances with the spirit of the young, flirtatious, playful Kitri, & her technique doesn't overshadow her artistry. Guillem is very acrobatic & precise, but I don't get the same feeling, as the accent seems to be on her extensions and gymnastic ability. I don't get any spirit of playfulness from Takada. Messerer's version has to be seen in the context of the standards of the time, but she exudes delight.

It's amazing how much technique improved between 1940 and 1969. Obviously technique has continued to improve since then but all the dancers from Maximova forward would look like they belonged in a modern ballet company - Messerer not so much.

How wonderful to see Sulamith Messerer's Kitri ... she was an amazing teacher, extremely disciplined and exacting, but also a lovely person, full of stories of her youth and the Russian ballet world of many decades ago, both Imperial and Soviet. She was my teacher for some years in England during the 80s, and I credit her immensely for my own style of teaching. We also connected on other levels, as a Lithuanian Jew (my own grandmother) and through our names, her's Sulamith and my own, Shushanna. Fascinating to see how the variations, emotions and styles accredited to Kitri have changed over the years. Thank you for the video.

Wow! You‘re very lucky, to have experienced the „Golden Age of Ballett“ with it’s unique dancers - Anna Pawlowa, Maja Plissetzkaja and more of such genius dancers. I miss some kind of artistic talent and aura, when i see modern female stars of ballett. Their techniques, of course, is brilliant but they mostly forget, that they’re first of all artists and not acrobats. I hope, that ballett won‘t completely turn into a kind of sports.

@@Julia-sg9wk Hello Julia. I have observed this myself, in modern ballet companies, in competitions (YAGP etc), and even amongst my own students. Far more interested in getting the leg 'up there', pulling off multiple pirouettes, over extended grande jetes...the list goes on. But the artistry - aah, now THAT'S a completely different question. It seems to have been lost in translation, along with musicality. And something else - there are very few dancers with the abilty to show charm, even sweetness - a quality that seems to have been forgotten. Everyone trying to outdo each other with over reaching gymnastics. I dont fault their technique, many are beautifully trained but yet....😔....

The documentation and teaching of technique has improved since the 1950s (thanks to documentation and history being preserved, but also to the open minds of the artists who accept adjusting movement to help prevent some injuries), it’s the demand on dancers that has changed, the hyper-mobility in joints in particular. And this is not a criticism, it is an honest observation. Not just with the female dancers, but the male dancers, too. And sometimes there are pirouettes added, and hyper-mobile extensions that alter the original choreography. I’m thankful to see these videos. This channel does a great job documenting our history.❤️🙏🏼

Thanks for this interesting compilation. I think "evolution" isn't the precise word for these comparisons. Yes, the technique has evolved from the last century. But the variations here were choreographed by different choreographers, even if each one started with Petipa as point of departure. Maximova probably danced Gorsky's choreography; Harvey's variation was choreographed by Baryshnikov, Guillem's by Nureyev, I believe, etc.

There are so many changes, additions and alterations to Don Quixote, which have many different authors, that Petipa and Gorsky are considered authors more by tradition. Alterations have not stopped until now. As for the performers of Kitri, I agree with the majority, the best Kitri is Maximova. But I also advise you to pay attention to Osipova, in some places she looks better. Sylvie Guillem is a good ballerina, but this is not a classic Russian ballet. Look at the work of the feet, hands, body. It's interesting, but it's not a Russian classic.

Thank you so much for this compilation which bears watching several times. All the Kitris bring something special and personal to the variation. I just felt that there was too long a gap between 1940 and 1970. (I know it is very hard to find clips to use).

Первые две балерины именно танцуют. Все остальные спят, японка вообще думала бросит танцевать.

The tutu on messerer looks like something a high school kid wears on spirit day. I really enjoyed her dance but she was fighting that tutu to look clean.

While Messerer's may not be as clean, as a non- professional, I enjoy watching her dance way more than the last two, which, again-to me-feels very sterile and technical- the passion and joy they must have in their work does not translate in these particular stage performances. I do love the side by sides though!! fascinating what has changed over the years

I'm imagining the dancer from the first recording watching the last recording and being like: "Nice smile. Very graceful. But that music's far too slow! Modern dancers clearly lack the speed and preci- .... Wait, where did her leg just go?!?"

Sylvie is perhaps my most favorite dancer, so I may be a bit biased, but it's easy to justify as she is absolutely sublime. However I found that Akane was very similar in the quality of her dancing and, of course, she brought her own style to the role. However, Sylvie still takes this for me as she has a playful/feisty edge that I don't feel in Akane's dancing. Of course this is not to say that there isn't a bit of that feeling at all in her performance. In the end this is a personal preference and I really think they are both exquisite.

It's a pity that you combined two different choreographic versions. There are plenty of wonderful modern dancers to dance Gorskiy's version still. It'll be interesting to see those.

#1 almost like a jig, the whole body itself looks like Bob Fosse stuff. The other dancers are more "up," she's street. She keeps it real. She will cut you. #2 PRECISE. Laser focus. The Zorro of ballet. No hesitation. She could make swatting flies look glamorous. #3. Sassy, sultry. I can smell her perfume. Its vanilla based. #4 lovely and pretty. She moves how emmy rossum sings. #5 Pose. Pose. Pose. She can stop, midair, if she wants. Perfect for photographs.
