Very interesting video, with lots of great examples. As a one-stop-catch-all effect Plasma seems to do a number of things, but in every example you gave here I could hear defects that would be better processed using a combo of compression and EQ. Plasma adds a lot of extra colour, which can be great if a quick fix is needed, but I strongly suspect that the plug in will create more problems than it solves, in terms of harmonic distortion. Yes, a very useful video!

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts! I think these kind of processing are a god send for lots of people, but if you know how to properly do things, reaching for specific tools is always better, also because you have the full control over the sound. But that's also time consuming, expecially considering a whole mix. That's probably the reason we see lots of people who sell their mixing and mastering services for very low prices, probably they just throw some of these stuff in every track, and they call it done after an hour, while doing everything properly takes from few hours to days!

@@FrankieTedesco I've been mastering my own mixes for a couple of decades at this point, and I am always happy to take a "quick fix" if it is quick and it does fix! I've used the Ozone suite since version 3, and it's been amazing to experience its growth. When I started out with Ozone it very quickly made my mixes sound amazing when mastered, but as time has gone on I now do much more in the individual tracks and busses, pre-mix - I never, never, never put anything on the mixdown channel - and as a result any mastering I do is really all about very subtle alignments for bass phase and consistent amplitude. I have Plasma, and I will try it out with a project I'm working on right now, so time will tell. But if I need to add some spangle and sparkle, whether to individual tracks or entire mixes, I feel as though I might already have it covered. But yeah, it's very interesting!

You need to test something with 80's acoustic drums.

I'm curious as to why when I run a sine wave through it (Plugin Doctor has a similar feature with the same results on it), it shows no harmonics being generated by the plugin. What is it doing? Using white noise? How can it create saturation without harmonics?
@FrankieTedesco28 күн бұрын
Are you running a sine wave through Plasma? You should be able to see harmonics with any spectrum analyzer then, even just loading pro-q3 it shows harmonics. Just be sure to check the analyzer tollerance (some distortions may be just low in volume). You cannot saturate without harmics, because harmonics are a result of saturation.
@G7sus4chord26 күн бұрын
@@FrankieTedesco There are no harmonics showing. I'm speculating Izotope may be pushing white noise through the plugin at the target frequency bell. Or the intelligence behind the plugin is using some new technology. I have reached out to Izotope and am waiting for a reply.

@@FrankieTedesco I bought it. It is subtle, but definitely doing good things. Been doing this literally since 1976, at times in a high level, and I finally realized that a lot of very small, subtle moves and decisions build up into major outcomes in your mixes/masters. I am a shameless plugin junkies. I have way too many plugins that are simply different brands of the same plugin. Every now and then, I get one that is unique, and that really makes a difference. Gullfoss, Soothe, TEOTE, etc. This is one of those. Highly recommend.

Wow you are doing this from very long time, it's very nice to have you here! I 100% agree with you, lots of subtle moves makes everything way better than few bigger, at the end of mix/master the difference is huge. I made lots of mixes with even just few subtle moves because the production was already on spot, and when i made the before/after comparison i was shocked all the time to see how even few subtle good moves make differences that sounds just unbelievable. Unfortunatly i have samish plugins from different companies too, i try to avoid to get new stuff if i'm not 100% sure i need it, but sometimes, i just fail, it happens i guess. Anyway time to time i just make a big purge, and i'm very good on that, i mean i uninstal lots of plugins forcing myself to use less. So i can decide wich "clone" to use, and it makes me more focussed on deliver the job than searching for stuff. But searching and triying newer plugins is always important, cause you never know when a new gem comes out, that may really make a difference. What matter the most, when you buy newer plugins, is to use my affiliate links ofc :D

What a useless plugin without a gain out. it's like they purposely designed it so people would think it's better than it is cause the result is louder.
@FrankieTedesco2 ай бұрын
It may have been equiped with something more, not too much, i like simple interfaces, but an UI resize and an output knob would have been welcome. Maybe they will implement it in the future, at least that's what i hope because it's a very good plugin imo
@teddym28082 ай бұрын
@@FrankieTedesco Izotope will never implement something that's not there already nor listen to customers. They would on the other hand take things away which is what they are known for. A perfect example is the new Trash plugin which is a significant downgrade from Trash 2. Instead of just tweaking the GUI of Trash 2 and adding modern compatibility, they completely ruined the plugin. There are many more examples of this kind of behaviour.

Teddym2808, do your own “gain” with your ears. Old school? Sure. But valid. Gain match and this plugin is really doing good stuff
@FrankieTedesco2 ай бұрын
@teddym2808 With trash i had the feel they hadn't the original source code anymore and so the had to rewrite it, but it's just a guess from me. I don't know how they operate, and if they take suggestions, i guess we will see, i hope they will but you may be right. My experience with them is mostly about Ozone and RX which i use since ever, and it's just positive, i have almost always saw improvements, with just few exception in a couple of ozone modules, but nothing deal breaking. The major issue, at least on my point of view, is when plugins get newer versions that doesn't load project made with older, like i.e. Ozone, v11 doesn't open previous versions, and it's the same with most companies, and this is kinda annoying if you want to keep backward compatibility with older projects, and also been able to load after years using newer versions, but that's another story

Not sure but listening to this video it sounds like the plugin is auto compensating. Character change can make thing more forward so it may seem much louder.
