For a small background story: LAY learnt the basic of Krumps for 3-6 months from Korean Krump champion TRIX before releasing LIT but he is still actively training after. Then LAY who became the Official Ambassador Street Dance of China became the Captain in the competition Street Dance of China 3 and practically became the unofficial ambassador for Krump lol. every dancer showered him with praises.

must read - lotus i.e., 莲 / lian in chinese pronounciation is like 'lit'. so he repeats i am the 莲 / lian, 'i am lit' in the song. in chinese culture, the lotus represents purity wherein it grows in the muddy pud yet lotus flowers are so pure and beautiful. his rising up from dark water can be also a symbolism for this. the fight is responding to haters who made fake news about him, who laughed at him when he said he wants to bring m-pop to the world, who looked down at his talents and capabilities as an artist. he is not afraid and he is unstoppable in reaching his dreams and achieving his goals. he was krumping wearing a mask with needles because haters can say whatever they want behind from the computers, but he can't diss back. there are two parts of the lotus, of him and of everything in the world. he lives and works with integrity like lotus but also with a power of a dragon.

As a fan of EXO (which is the group he started with and is still part of) I can state that Lay's history as a dancer carries so many kinds of struggles and emotional stories from his trainee days. I don't know Lay well, besides what I have seen of him on 'Street Dance of China 3' but he does seem to love Krump as an art form and he evangelized it heavily on 'Street Dance of China 3'. I was going to recommend watching (or skimming to the dance parts at least) that show as others have. My son and I recently became addicted to it as our pandemic lockdown binge watch. It's a bit long to react to (11 3 hour episodes and a *6 HOUR* finale) but it is a great show if you want to see a competition that truly respects the dancers and lets them shine. As a competition, it is a nice mix of solo vs. group and battles vs. routines. Most of the competitors are professionals who have competed internationally either solo or in groups. The four captains (of which Lay was one) participate heavily in not just selecting teams but taking part in the dances as well.

one of lay backup dancers said that it was such intense training. They really learned the krump dance from the krump master and spent like 4 hours for 4 weeks but lay spent 8 hours more a day on top of their training just for the krump dance and also lay spent 1.4 million USD for this mv and all of that production comes from his own money:')

(For you, and for who may want to see more of Lay's dance) There's a Chinese program called "Street Dance of China", it has eng subs on KZbin, and Lay is there! I see lots of people recommending street dance of china 3, this is a performance from the finale with lay and his team kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3bKoXpjorp4ldk (you probably already know this, but Lay composes and produces all of his own music). The celebrities are team leaders/captains on the show, the participants are all professional dancers. The captains' battle at the end of ep 2 was a highlight and trended in China when it was aired. I couldn't find a full cut on youtube but here is ep 2 time stamped to where it starts kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2qrqp2JrK5-n68 for everyone besides yibo, they had never battled before going on the show. Lay danced krump for all 4 rounds even though his danced mainly urban for over 10 years - there is a little back story to this which he told during an interview - basically Trix left his activities in Korea to go to China to continue training Lay and in return Lay promised to promote krump to the best of his abilities. During the whole process, he fell in love with krump and the culture and ever since it has become his main style.

Lay studied krump because he was chossing dance style for the song lit and found krump fit it well. He's promoting krump in China and it goes really well. In the beginning, the dance moves have traditional Chinese dance and Beijing opera elements, graceful and powerful at the same time, usually roles of kings and generals do these movements in Beijing Opera. The music has many Beijing opera elements too. It’s interesting that they mix these elements with Krump so smoothly
