I learned to follow and lead this figure without a "sacada", even though it is in cross system on the follower's left side. If the sacada is done well and very close to the follower's midline without crossing over into the free leg side, there is no risk to the followers knee. Unfortunately, if the sacada is too shallow, and the leader puts his weight too far across her midline this puts the follower's knee in jeapardy. The leader often thinks of pushing the leg away, or going into the leg and this can hyper extend her knee if he rushes it or aims poorly. I agree that doing this in close embrace is best and is actually safer for the follower as long as the leader stays clear of her knee. There is another close embrace version of this same back cross that doesn't use volcada (though there is some apilado) or a sacada, the steps are smaller and often easier on a crowded dance floor when you have people on all sides. The steps are all the same.
