I just wanted to let you know Jana that u are my total inspiration. Next month i will be starting pointe and I've been struggling with my body image my whole life. I was scared that because I am bigger than the other girls in my class i would not be able to go on pointe. But now seeing you a ballerina just like me it really boosts my confidence, seeing that you can go on pointe it tells me that just because I am curvy i cam do anything the other tiny ballerinas can do.,i love your channel sooo much. Thanks for everything,

Wear Moi leotards are designed for women with longer torsos. Luckily that extra length means that if you have a shorter torso with a large bust, their leos can work pretty well. I wouldn't recommend them if you have a long torso AND a large bust, however, and on some styles the straps will be too long (I usually sew them). Also, on some styles the fabric has a lot of give and on others it doesn't, so the fit depends a lot on how your curves are distributed and which style you choose. I have an hourglass body shape with a short torso, so for me Wear Moi leos fit almost perfectly. Wear Moi leos almost always have a full front lining, so there's no support to be had there. Instead, I've sewn snaps for detachable bra cups to provide shape and a bit of support into my backless leotards. The fit is snug enough that it helps reduce bounce but doesn't eliminate it altogether. However, I prefer wearing them with or without a bra as the style dictates and don't worry too much about a bit of jiggle.

I know this is old but certain stores sell bras for backless or low cut tops. While they don't support and lift like a regular bras, but it may give more support. They are usually adhesive.

I have a skin disease on my upper arms and back that I used to pick and scratch at INCESSANTLY, so there are a ton of hyperpigmented scars that I finally started trying to get rid of, but it's going to take at least a year to really see a difference. They've been a huge pain, and when they first started showing up, I had stopped dancing or being regularly active for SOOOOO long. I finally got the motivation to pick dancing up again, so I've been desperately looking for a leo that covers my back, arms, and large chest without breaking the bank or sacrificing one of the aspects and WOO it's been a ride lol. It's a shame I stopped for so long cuz now my weight's distributed weird; all in my chest and thighs, so strengthening to get back en pointe is *so* difficult. BUT thank you so much for posting this, I really appreciate the suggestions, cuz at this point, I wasn't sure where to turn lol. Thanks again!

Thank you, thank you for putting yourself out there! You are beautiful and deserve to feel beautiful (and comfortable and supported) while dancing! @trappedinside110 жыл бұрын
I think you need to re-make this without all of the negative body image remarks! Believe me when I say "I get it" I have sooo many insecurities as well. I certainly think ballet is a catch-22, as far as feeling good when we are dancing, but not liking what we see in the mirror when the music stops. You are such a beautiful girl, and I admire you for putting yourself out there! Try to be gentle with yourself and appreciate the amazing things your body can do! Anyway, I love the zip-up leos, they are unique looking and look very nice on you. I almost always wear black tights as well, and have not tried theatricals yet. I think I'm going to buy a pair now. Question- you said for one of your leotards you don't even wear a bra; how do you stay supported? I have a large chest and I feel like I have to wear this crazy stiff sports bra no matter what leotard I'm wearing, otherwise I'm not secure at all. During performances, I bandage my chest, wear a light-weight nude bra with clear straps over that, then my undergarment. It's crazy! If you've found anything that works well, please share! Also, does that wrap skirt ride up on you? I barely ever wear my wrap skirts because its a constant issue, but I'm wondering if I bought a plus size one if it would make a difference? I often wear black boy shorts to give a little extra coverage, is that something you're allowed to do? A lot of times I add bright colored flowers to my hair, and start class with a funky sweater and leg Warmers to take my attention away from the areas I don't like so much. It's never easy, but little things like that and trying to focus on just my dancing, and not what I see in the mirror or how other girls look is how I maintain my passion for dance without all of this "stuff" getting in the way! Thanks for the video, good to see someone else overcoming the same issues!
@BallerinasByNight10 жыл бұрын
Thank you, trappedinside1! My intention was not for the remarks to be negative, but just to open up about the insecurities I have. I certainly don't dwell on these things all the time, but considering some people might be new to ballet and new to dancewear, I felt it could be good for them to know that they should not let similar insecurities keep them from continuing! So glad you love the zip-up leos! I did forget to mention that the other plus to those is that you can wear a bra with them and it won't show. I wore the short sleeve one to class last night and it. was. amazing :) The ones I don't wear a bra with I just go unsupported. The leo fits tight enough over my chest that it kind of "flattens out" my breasts. Not completely, but for me it is ok (or maybe I've just been doing it long enough that I don't notice?). I think wearing a nude bra is a great option, actually. I had not thought of that! Do you have a specific brand that you like? I have not experienced the wrap skirt riding up on me! I could definitely wear black boy shorts to my classes. That is a great option! I love your point about adding a pop of something to your hair or attire! I also feel that putting on some lipstick before class can give me that extra pop of sass if I need it. Oh, the power of a good lipstick! Thank you so much for your comment!!!

I've been learning ballet on my own since January. I am around 175 and a bit heavy for a ballet dancer, but am on a health and wellness journey and was around 260 pounds when I started over a year ago. I have been so overwhelmed when looking for leotards and dancewear because even though I've lost a lot of weight, most of it is made for people who are around 120 or 130 pounds. I'm also conscious about my arms because I'm still loosing weight and trying to tone them up. I'm so glad to know there are options out there.

Jana, you look wonderful! I'm a 5'7" size 14 lady with wide size 10 feet, who is pretty curvy (built like an Amazon, hey!) - and have ALWAYS struggled with dancewear - even when I was a slender size 7 and dancing ballet 5-6 days a week. Dancewear is always sized smaller (especially brands like Natalie), and even fitting things like pointe shoes feels like a challenge. Have you ever tried KH Martin or the Mariia brands? They are newer brands so I'm wondering if you (or anyone else) has tried them and can tell us how they run. I'm currently squeezing myself into my Mirella & Bloch leos from college which are a size L, but I was a little smaller when I bought them!
@BallerinasByNight9 жыл бұрын
+Bernadette Machard de Gramont Thank you so much for your comment! I haven't tried KH Martin or Mariia leotards. I feel like they could be promising though since it looks like they offer XL sizes! It is so tough to gauge fit with dance wear because, like you said, it's always sized small. I feel like I've had the most luck with brands that offer an XL size, so I think it's worth a shot to try either of those brands. If I order or try any I'll let you know what I think!

Hello! I just ordered the Dacha leo a few days ago and was scared it might not fit. I am a size 10-12 in street clothes, and like you wear large and xl in dancewear. I have another wear moi leo(the Japura) in a size large which fits, and after I saw how it fit you it was sort of a relief. Have you ever tried Eurotard stirrup tights? They are so awesome in every way! The waist is the same material as the tights are and come in XXl so they are very comfy and don't pinch at the waist giving that unflattering line, and they make your legs look super long when worn over your shoes/slippers. Thank u for the post as it was very helpful!

Thank you so much for posting! I am a young opera singer, but I have a dance minor, and I always find it hard to find dance apparel that I don't feel self conscious in. I also always feel discouraged because I usually wear a street size medium, but in dance clothes a large or XL. My other issue is that I'm really disproportionate. I have very large arms. But a relatively small chest, waist, and tummy. But I have a huge butt and thighs :| do you know of any shops that make customs sized leotards with thicker spandexy fabric with long sleeves?

I know this video is pretty old but i thought this would be a good place to ask this. I am a 14 year old plus-size girl and I really love ballet. I have been wanting to start now for 3 years but my insecurities keep getting in my way. I did ballet for a year or two when i was 6 and I loved it, but we moved and the atmosphere wasn't the same at the studio I was considering joining. Anyway I guess my question is should I start again now? I know I won't go pro, and because of my weight (which is mostly muscle) I won't be able to go on pointe. I really love ballet, but I have really, really low self-esteem, but I think this would help with that. So, should I do it?

susanna mendenhall i know this is an older post, but I have to say this: I grew up dancing as an overweight girl and you can totally dance on pointe. I was doing it when I was about 260 lbs (it wasn't easy and didn't help my old ankle injuries) and I'm trying to do it again now ( I'm just under 200 lbs and recovering from a broken foot last year). as long as you have the strength to keep your weight out of your feet, you can do it.

I'm a 13 year old big/curvy ballerina, however quite short. I think your size is perfect, I know there's stereotypes about ballerinas being super skinny, but in my opinion it's all about your technique and so. Also I'm on grade 3, but I skipped grade 1 so I'm a bit below, although that doesn't stop me from not believing :). I have black leotards but my exam one is bright pink! It's so weird ahah. Also we have to wear light pink tights with it. I prefer black, I'm allowed it for lessons but unfortunately not for exams :(, also can I just say I love your videos. They help me a lot with my ballet, and I'm going on pointe, I'm getting them fitted on 28th August. But I'm not on proper pointe since I'm only grade 3, my teacher thought it would be a good way of strengthening my feet and be better and used to it by grade 4/5. I can't wait to see more videos :) x

I so understand you, and thanks for this video. I am a size 12-14 normal clothes plus I'm 51. I can't bear leos with sleeves - just too hot and they cut my arm at a bad place. I like the Mariia brand at discount dance - they are reversible and pretty supportive..racer back tank is my favorite or a pinch front v neck. Someones I worry about showing too much cleavage. Often I'll wear a tight black tank on top of my leo. No bra. I like Natalie leos in XL and I buy my tights as big as I can find them because I can pull them way way up. :D

That means I have loose skin in places and bumps to hide. Your tips were helpful, and your bravery is refreshing. Something that I love to wear is a unitight. It holds just about everything in place. For women who have boobs that are no longer young and perky, mere squash isn't enough. I hate the uni-boob, and the "girls" just end up low and squashed...though it's true, at least don't move around. I have looked for years, and I believe there is no solution to this other than tacking an old bra into the leo. The leos with a built in underwire bra are uncomfortable and unflattering in the back. YOU have a beautiful back. (I haven't solved the back-fat issue yet either. Yes you can be 5'3", 114 lbs and still have back fat.) If anyone has other suggestions for controlling "the girls"...other than bulky uni-boob sports bras, I would LOVE to hear them! Great job Jana!

I know how you feel! Mostly, I'll understand the boob problems later maybe. I'm a B cup so not huge. I'm 23, 5'3" 113 lbs and have back fat, a muffin top and pudgy upper thighs. I feel uncomfortable in leotards too even though other people tell me I look fine. I just see the fat and leotards and tights hit me just right to enhance every ounce of fat. But I'm right at the bottom of a healthy BMI (especially since I lose a lot of weight when I get ill, my doctor does not want me losing weight) so I just try to watch my alignment and not my thighs!

Yes! I have that underboob trampoline issue too. I'm actually ok with it because it makes my chest less pronounced from the rest of my body. If you could actually see how tiny my ribcage is, my boobs would look huge!

i have watched this a million times in the last few years and i have only commented now because i just now realized how badly you talk about your body. you really should appreciate it for what it is. Your beautiful and not FAT!!!!

Thank you :) This video was years ago and I feel like an entirely different person, I have learned so much about body acceptance. I actually can't stand to watch this back and have contemplated taking it down altogether!

What type of bra do you wear with a leotard?
@BallerinasByNight8 жыл бұрын
I'll either wear a sports bra or one of those thin underwire bras without the padding!

Please don't be insecure of your body, we're ballet dancers, we're GOING to be harsh about ourselves, I honestly see nothing wrong with you, I personally have danced (and done gymnastics and circus) with all different types of people, big and small, age 4- 65, men and women, and if I was in a class with you I wouldn't be bothered about how much your wearing etc, honestly I'd probably be more focused on my own hips! Haha xx

I love all of these but sadly most of them actually look bad on me because I'm skinny and I don't put on weight

I remember feeling super insecure in ballet post puberty. *sigh* I was not the biggest girl, but I was NOT small unfortunately.

I hate how leotards are sized! I am by most accounts a thin person and most leotard brands I wear a Large PS I have the same BalTogs leotard but in blue. The one on discount dance is mostly cotton but the SAME leotard I got at my local store is a sports material

Well you put it on your door the you put your leg in a hoop and pull the other hoop to improv you strength in your legs and make you more flexible :)

You shouldn't cover up your body - dancing ballet is beautiful!

I like your hips, you have a nice figure. I have the opposite problem, no butt and my spine is a little odd so a skirt really helps to create the illusion of an hourglass figure.

Yea I'm really skinny too. I feel ya.

As long as there's enough distance between you and the negative self-talk, it's okay.

I not saying the woman in this is fat, but isn't it difficult for large or curvy people to progress further in dance? Because it's so much harder to lift all the body weight.
@ellemitchell53638 жыл бұрын
Well it depends. If u have incredibly strong legs and arms then it is not as hard. Sadly, larger people have not as strong bones but If u do ballet workouts everyday than its fine.

Btw guys, if your tights are too tight around the waist do what I do and cut the band in half horizontally it works for me! :)
