Good work Dan. I've always got the impression shaving a bay is months of work given what people say in articles/build threads etc!
@DanChambersDAC3 жыл бұрын
Cheers dude. I thought that too. I think the welding and filling part is doable start to finish in 1-2 weeks depending on skill level and experience. Can’t wait to have this filled and in primer to see what it looks like.
@rcflyer20003 жыл бұрын
Great video I really like how you have shaved the engine of this Mk1 Golf GTi so far. Especially looking forward to seeing how the brake system will be laid out on the driver's side of the bay. Since I would like to do similar brake system lay out in my 81 Mk1 Scirocco RHD in the near future.
@DanChambersDAC3 жыл бұрын
Cheers bud! Looks so much better doesn't it! I have sent my column to have a bracket welded on that will have the cylinders on them. Will run reservoirs in the rain tray.
@rcflyer20003 жыл бұрын
Great looking forward to seeing the setup for the brakes system. Now I see why you kept the rain tray. I like these cars better with rain tray left intact.

Nice work mate. Probably to late now but for future reference, instead of cutting out metal circles, use penny washers. You can then also pop a long bolt in it to hold in place while you weld it.
@DanChambersDAC3 жыл бұрын
Thank you bud. I did have a go with some penny washers but only had 1 size. Cutting the disc's like I did didn't take very long.

Looking good Dan, only one thing, hasn't the strength been taken out of the legs now.
@toast61353 жыл бұрын
I wondered the same. When I've done it to mine I made a T section and invented the seam to the inside so smooth on top but retained the strength.
@mikeyg42973 жыл бұрын
They are meant to collapse when hit there's no actual load when driven
@DanChambersDAC3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Paul. seen a couple of replies already. Im not too fussed about strength as they are designed to collapse anyway. If it was a big enough accident to fold the front you would have a lot of other things to worry about.
@ert22033 жыл бұрын
@@DanChambersDAC Those seams are there for a reason. Yes, those parts are meant to crumple up on a head on collision. By taking off the seams, you have weakened the front that needs to be held up. Remember, the front engine mount is getting a lot of stress when you're really hauling ass , so much that you're bonnet could pop up... ( yes, I've seen it quite a few times) The Golf 1 doesn't have the strongest chassis, its actually quite soft. When the car is done, drive it without the upper strut brace, and the bottom one between the wishbones, then add them.... you'll be surprised how stiff the car suddenly gets. How do I know my way around Mk1's ? I spent over ten years making them into all types of racers... road,track, rallye and rallyecross. I know, it's to late now. Never mind. Keep up the good work ! 👍

Looks amazing Dan, have you thought about black small bumpers (get rid of the meffy plastic ones?) nd a small rear light panel, poss even a swallow tail if you could fab one? (cant imagine you can buy one) not sure if the cab rear panel could be adapted to fit
@DanChambersDAC3 жыл бұрын
Cheers bud. I have been thinking about this for weeks. I think I am leaning towards having the standard bumpers though as they look so good on them. it is an 83 GTI after all.

Looks great Dan. I shaved mine 15 years ago and removed the cowl. If I could do things again, I’d do it the way you are. Keep going dude. Any chance you’re getting a different valve cover for the 1.8t? It’s a great engine, but honestly isn’t the prettiest looking engine IMO. Either way I know it’ll turn out nice if you continue doing things the right way. 👍
@DanChambersDAC3 жыл бұрын
Thank you bud, yeah I think the route I am taking is the best one… I hope 😂 i have been looking at different valve covers but haven’t made a decision yet 🤔
@derhare3 жыл бұрын
@@DanChambersDAC running the engine cover plastics helps but I prefer to look at the engine. There’s quite a few clean billet styles that would look proper in powder coat or anodized. 👍
