Someone asked me via email a question on Story points: Q: In Agile SCRUM, who assigns the Story points? Creator, Scrum Master, Product Owner or the Project Manager ? A: Story points should be done by an engineer that truly understands what might be necessary to implement the specific story or task. To improve transparency and get multiple people validating the numbers, it’s great practice for teams to have an estimation session as a group. (This is sometimes part of Sprint Planning). The Scrum Master and/or Product Owner facilitate this Estimation/Planning meeting. But the actual estimation MUST come from team members responsible for doing the work. There is often an estimation game called Planning Poker. It works like this: 1) Display an un-estimated story on the screen in front of the whole team. 2) Everyone in the room privately writes down their estimate on a piece of paper. 3) When everyone has a number, everyone turns their estimate over and shows it to the room. This helps to make sure the wisdom and experience of the whole team helps inform the estimates. 4) Often the whole team has similar numbers. If so, that's a good estimate. 5) Sometimes there are outliers. When there is a person that has a dramatically different number, ask them why. They will often explain that they know something about why this work is hard, that the rest of the group is overlooking. Give them the chance to explain. The outlier is often correct!

As a product owner I have done something very similar to this and it works. Also, sometimes a person with an outlyer (very high story points) does not understand what to do or how to do it. In these cases it is helpful that the team understands that nobody is trying to 'be right" we are all there to "get it right". If your agile meetings are judgement free you will find that new and less technically skilled members of the team will speak openly and the meeting can be a great leaarning tool. In order to keep the meeting on track and moving, if an explanation requires more than 1 minute to explain, the senior technical member wil take that up with the junior member after the meeting. I frequently sat in on those exchanges.

Thanks for this - a couple of tips: 1) calm down, you have an impressive speed of delivery, but it's not a race to see how quickly you can talk, give us a chance to absorb the material ! 2) get rid of the background muzak, it adds nothing to the presentation and is just an irritating distraction. But it was a good overview. Thanks.

Sorry, yes. I actually did an AB test on the music vs. the non-music version and the music version got longer duration listens. People talking at you is boring. Apologize that you hate it and that it is distracting. I've subtitled the video now, so you can kill the sound and read my words if that's helpful.

I was leaarning things even though I have been previously exposed to Jira and Agile. A tip for you to help those who do not already know this stuff or they haven't done it in awhile (my situation), consider slowing down your rate of speech a bit. A small difference there has positive impact. Your natural speech rate was too fast to follow if the viewer is actually who your intended audience should be. I had to manaully slow down the video to .75 of natural speed in settings in order to follow the presentation and know I was understanding it. Again, excellent video. Great intro to Jira and the UI's involved in doing everyday Jira Tasks. As a contractor, typically long term assignments (i.e.; 2-ish + years), I get the ying and yang of organizations that are ardent MS Proj On-Line / Sharepoint houses, and the flip side, of ardent Confluence / Jira houses. The opposing camps seem to equally hate, hate, hate (truly loath) the opposing toolset quite passionately. That said, I find myself all wrapped into one platform for a couple years, then need to pivot on a dime to the other platform like at the start of the following work week. Of course, each flip / flop means I need to reacquaint again with the other platform as I am almost back to newbie again. Suggestion; Help for me and also 'newbies'. Pause at each UI for a few moments, and let the viewer digest the UI. Many people will not have access to Jira (yet) so it is your representation of the UI that will be simulating their access. This suggestion sort of dovetails into the suggestion I read of delivery 'cadence / slow down a bit'. This act of hovering over a GUI element for a few moments will also help slowing the delivery down. For me I kept pausing the video to digest the GUI on what you were doing, rewinding, replay, ditto a few times on each key topic you introduced. Anyway.. fantastic work and thanks !

Thank you Dan for really great tutorial! For my better understanding I have a couple of questions: 1. Is it possible to define a project stages based on agile or waterfall methodologies? 2. Is it possible to define roles and responsibilities for each stage of the project? For example Sales Director, Controlling, External Client and so on? 3. Is it possible to define Project Identification Area with the Key Responsibilities (Sponsor, Business Owner), business deadline, business case, project description, key milestones, user stories baclog with business priorities and financial informations? 4. Is it possible to define some flows for each stage of the project? 5. Is it possible to set some alerts for the milestones and implement some rules for each of them? 6. Is it possible to define acceptional points between the stages of the project and send notification to some group of people? 7. Is it possible to create and save the baseline schedules, introducing tolerances for indyvidual project parameters (budget, scope, schedule) and investigating possible deviations from these parameters? 8. Is it possible to create timesheet process? 9. Is it possible to create vacation plans? 10. Is it possible to define and manage resources availibility for the project based on other projects? 11. Is it possible to define and manage stock availability based on other project? 12. Is it possible to define release and change management process? 13. Is it possible to simple export roadmap (with Gantt) of the projects based on some criteria like priority, stage and so on. 14. Is it possible to make some integration with our internal systems? 15. Is it possible to import some schedules from MS Project? 16. What is the cost of the solution? 17. What licensing looks like? 18. Is it possible to download the full version of Jira for monthly user acceptance testing? Thanks for your help!!! Regards / Pawel J.

Thanks for the great questions. I can't answer all of this in a comment thread, but I will keep them in mind for the future videos. For some of your questions regarding scheduling features like time tracking and Gantt features, you're not going to find those as out-of-the-box features of Jira. @Dan, thanks for making this video. Came to this from your older 101 video. It is quite crisp and precise - much appreciated. Would be very interested if you were to ever make a video on how to adapt the usage of JIRA for SAFe but focussing not only on how the SCRUM or Kanban team uses it, but how SAFe Solution Manager and SAFe Product Manager may use it! I'd imagine it as a having to have a hierarchy of Epics, or creating custom labels -- reflecting the onion-shell analogy of SAFe's layering of concerns.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you liked it. I'll tell you a secret. I DID speak more slowly. From 20:27 in the board, there should be Pending and Not OK columns for a task because sometimes the task isn't done well or sometimes it is done for some parts and it is only completed when other task is finished
@chuparkoff5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your additional suggestions! You can, for sure, add those extra columns. It's quite common. However, as you get closer to Continuous Delivery, it becomes more critical to know instantly via Automated Testing if the task is done well or not done well. If the task fails its Unit and Integration tests then it should still be in the InProgress column. This way you can avoid switching to lower priority items when the number one priority item isn't actually done yet. Regarding the "WaitingOnOtherTasks" point, consider adding feature flags and backwards compatibility to your features, so that you can commit/push/finish them (if they pass their AutomatedTests) as soon as they are Done, even if complementary tasks are not yet completed. The closer you get to this AutomatedTesting, IndividialTaskIndependence state, the faster you will release, and the more you will eliminate context switching and accidental focus on things that aren't the number one priority. Thanks again for watching and also contributing!!

🙂🙂🙂🙂Thanks It is really very well explained, There are couple of questions - 1- what is called a stretch card ? 2- what is incident review ? 3- what is pre concept sprint ?
@chuparkoff4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the questions! STRETCH CARD: A Stretch card is just a card you might add to a Sprint without expecting it to get done. I wouldn't do this until you're really good at estimating. INCIDENT REVIEW: Incident review is part of a much bigger process called "Incident Management". There's a lot to this. I would Google "ITIL Incident Management" and look for some presentations or videos on that subject. PRE CONCEPT SPRINT: I don't think this is actually a thing. A Concept Sprint is a sprint dedicated to investigating an idea to see if it has value and achievability. I wouldn't do work prior to the Concept Sprint. So I don't think doing a PREConcept Sprint is a good idea.
