As far as I am aware historically it was first coined by the Romans, at a time when Christianity became the official religion under the converted Emperor Constantine and our Ancestors were compelled to practice their worship away from the city centers and urban areas as churches were built on top of the ruins of former pagan Temples. Pagani refers to country people or people who lived in rural districts, and this became synonymous with the term heathen, or "people of the heath", ie. people who lived in harmony with nature and wanted to follow their ancestral ways of living rather than conform or be converted into the new religion.
