I had the pleasure of meeting Jean Butler 15 years or so ago. I’m 30 now and will never forget getting a chance to chat with her. Dancing on Dangerous ground was always underrated. ❤

I managed to see it in London and NY - they tried so so hard to make this likable to the audiences... they just weren't ready for it. An obscure tale from Irish culture (to anyone outside of Ireland, anyway), combined with an experimental dance style and super modern costumes and set design... it's a beautiful show, and one of my favorites to this day... really wish it had become something bigger, though.

Damn, you're right. Colin and Jean can dance so emotionally. It's really great piece of art, to show a legend and a great love story with such a minimalistic scenography and costumes, simply by dancing and music. They're my favourite dancing duet ever.

Having seen Michael + Jean, Colin + Jean and the later understudies (good but not as good), Jean and Colin are the perfect mixture. Michael ... a bit too interested in just Michael. Lord of The Dance. Awesome but basically about how awesome Michael is. Dancing on Dangerous Ground is a lot Goth, a lot Riverdance and very amazing. Love it.

I think if they changed costumes for everyone, updated the story to meet the legend, and opened now...they would have been better received. This can’t be even remotely compared to Riverdance or Michael Flatley’s work. Both Jean and Colin’s chemistry towards each other on stage is palpable. Their moves together are sensual and sexy. It’s a classic performance that I truly wish returned!

Even in Riverdance their chemistry was palpable, I feel like it was even more so in this because there were some sensual moments. There is no doubt they danced beautifully together.

The thing I love about Irish dancing is that some songs can tell a story without words kind of like ballet but sometimes with more energy. I used to have this on dvd but lost it years ago .Glad I stumbled across this video.

Based on the myth of Diarmuid Agus Grainne... I put my hand up: I've always been a Michael Flatley fan of sorts but this production definitely beats everything of his beyond the original "Lord of the Dance". This is truly beautiful Irish Step Dancing with the fabulous Jean Butler and Colin Dunne (both of Riverdance). I'd always wanted to see this and agree that this was a show very much ahead of its time which deserved great success. Thank you very much for posting this Elena.

I saw this once only because of Jean and Colin, I just love them together, however I had no knowledge of the story. Then I was watching a movie, Leap Year, and in it was referenced the telling if this story, and my mind flashed to this show and I fully understood then. It was beautiful when I didn't understand and even more so now that I do.

Seriously, I think this show is much better than Jean and Colin and their team were given credit for. Honestly, this is a far cry from what those stupid jackass critics call, "a Riverdance cliche". I wish that someday this show could be brought back form the ashes and make people today see that it is one of the best irish dance shows out there and that it is one of those shows that can top Lord of the Dance, if possible.

I couldn't agree more. I think the show was ahead of its time, which is why it folded. Circa 1999 people had still not tired of the "Riverdance cliche" and wanted more of it, hence the success of Flatley's "Celtic Tiger" tackfest. Given how well Heartbeat of Home is doing, I think DODG could do very well today too.
@Mrnickstr89
@Mrnickstr89 10 жыл бұрын
Bechke-Petrov Fan Couldn't agree more. DODG was ahead of its time. It took the best of both Riverdance and Lord of the Dance and created a truly dramatic piece of Irish Dance. To top it all off, Colin and Jean debuted a fresh take on contemporary Irish dance, where dancers do move their arms and such but don't do it as much as in LOTD. I could go on and on about what made this show such an incredible standout that shouldn't have been written off as just a Riverdance clone. I think fans of the show just need to get out there and get to Jean and Colin- let them know we want this show back on the stage.

The 1996 Riverdance is also performed by Colin and Jean. They are absolutely best best irish dancing King and Queen in my heart. But by the way, in dancing on dangerous ground, for that old man performed by Tony didn't have any dancing clips. Just going around to witness that these two youngsters are falling in love and he is just a remaining person. What an ironic role arranged in this program. I didn't catch why Tony is willing to accept to be such an arrogant and cruel role?!

It is a shame that "Dancing on Dangerous Ground" was forced to close shortly after only a few weeks. I saw the documentary "Dare to Dance", the documentary about the making of the show on Bravo several years ago, and Jean and Colin poured their heart and soul into it, but it wasn't enough. I read that in addition to it being considered "Just another 'Riverdance' show", it lost a lot of money during the London premiere and Jean and Colin were sacked with a lot of debt. It also did not help that "Riverdance" and Michael Flatley, who by this time was producing and starring in his own shows ("Lord of the Dance" and "Celtic Tiger") were dominating Irish dance shows at the time.

Pam Alford I agree. I remember hearing and reading the same. They should have waited a few years so that it didn’t look like a competition between the three of them and critics would have seen it in a different light. Another thing to mention was that it did really well here in the states. It’s such a shame. If they revive it now, with some minor adjustments, it could and would blow the roof off!

this is so much better than M.Flatley*s showes! i still don*t understand why did the show failed and cancelled. Apparently London didn*t take it so well, a critics eticated it as a "Riverdance cliche". That*s really not fair! they apreciate Flatleys ridiculous hand wawings and showing of and don*t respect a great vision.

That is the Irish dance show i like the most: incredible dancing, excelent choreographies, actual story with characters you can relate to, live music... In my book, LoTD comes nowhere near this (as far as M. Flatley is incredible dancer and choreographer, repeating solos from Riverdance in every incarnation of the LoTD show is not that impressive, just as re-doing a show to again boast himself in front of rows and rows of exquisite dancers. Although I admire him from the commerce point of view: he sells what he has, sometimes only dressing it in a new colors)
@jocelynharris-fx8ho

I agree. I thought that I was the only one who noticed that Michael Flatley kept "re-cycling" the same show but tried to change it up with new music, sexually suggestive dancing and clothes for the females, bare chested men and cartoonish, almost Disney-like background graphics. I started out loving his shows, then I grew to dislike them.😮The focus was no longer on the music, dancing and beauty of Irish culture. It was like going to the gym and watching people work out in their skimpy outfits. One thing that I always loved about Riverdance, is that everything stayed classy and in good taste. Nothing sleazy or cringe-worthy. Now that I've seen this show in it's ENTIRETY, I admit that I like the dancing but the storyline is a bit too dark and sad for me. It's about a woman whose heart is divided and her "real" love is not the man that she married.😮 I lived that storyline but in the opposite order. That is not something that needs to be glamorized in a dance, or ANY form of entertainment. It's painful and gut wrenching when you realize that the person you love, has given their heart to someone else.😢 Perhaps Riverdance was more popular because it had a more "upbeat" story; even during the scene where they were leaving for the new world. This story is a tad bit too depressing for my taste. It is too much like a combination of West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet; both very tragic tales.

I love Riverdance very much and I love Colin & Jean but this show was a bit boring and I didn't like the music too much. Michael Flatley's LOTD is my favourite show, Mike was just so powerful, luminous and sexy. And he was 37 when he started in Riverdance but looked so good & young for his age. Well yeah, I know I'm quite a Michael Flatley -fangirl. But Jean & Colin needed apprecitiation too.

This show was too dark for my taste. The stage, the wardrobe and the storyline were too black and dismal. My sister and I, were trained in ballet and stage performing and the set, clothing and colors all contribute to the success of the show and the performance. Years ago, there was a movie called " 50 shades of Grey". I didn't go see it but this show could have had a similar title. The lighting made it look like it was filmed in a warehouse. This is the only show that I don't like; only because it didn't give me a feeling of hope, inspiration, joy, celebration and victory like the other Irish dance shows do. Jean and Colin are great dancers but this show was not a good fit for their talent .
