The impact that the collapse of the bubble economy left on the deep psyche of the Japanese people is probably greater than one might imagine. However, for those who did not experience the bubble firsthand, it’s difficult to grasp what it was really like. I am often asked by younger people to explain it, but it’s quite hard to convey-
Or rather, it’s almost impossible to communicate. This is to be expected, as the phenomenon of a bubble is only defined as such after it bursts. While caught up in the bubble, people are generally unaware of it. Since we were unaware of it while living through it, even when I try to reflect on what it was like, my explanations tend to become vague, like saying, "There was a sense of euphoria."
However, if that atmosphere was indeed characteristic of a bubble, then I began to wonder-couldn't we say that even now, in 2024, we are still in the midst of a bubble? This thought marked the beginning of the concept, or rather hypothesis, behind this piece of music. The hypothesis is this: we might currently be experiencing another bubble economy. Looking back in the future, people might say, "Oh, so we were in another bubble even after the supposed collapse of the previous one."
This is the idea that underpins the creation of this piece.
About the Music:
During the bubble economy, there was a disco called "Juliana Tokyo," and I still remember the kind of music that was played there. I incorporated a Juliana-style loop in the intro. The music is fundamentally atonal, with moments of tonal recovery occurring intermittently. However, the piece is structured in such a way that tonality and atonality revolve around each other until the very end. Additionally, I aimed to consistently capture the "atmosphere" of the bubble era throughout the piece, particularly the essence of Juliana Tokyo's music. That said, I’m not entirely sure if that atmosphere has been successfully conveyed this time.
To elaborate further, the music of "Juliana Tokyo" was based on 1980s disco music. For this piece, I approached it from the perspective of: "1980s disco" → "Juliana Tokyo" → (bubble collapse) → "So, if there is bubble music in 2024, what would it sound like?"
