5 days ago I got my learner permit here in Australia. I’m 56yo and while riding is new to me, I’m doing OK so far. Your advice and videos have really helped me in the real world while I navigate the streets as a beginner. I have a beautiful brand new 2024 Honda CBR500R and every time I ride I have a little Dan on my shoulder saying “what’s that car gonna do” and “leave more space to the car in front” etc. You’re really making a difference to how I ride. You will never know how many accidents you’ve helped prevent and how many lives you’ve saved, injuries you’re prevented by helping riders be safer on the roads all over the world. I can’t thank you enough! Craig - Australia 😊

at least 2x weekly go to a local parking lot and do constructive practice. Set rules and goals and practice slow speed turns. For the first 6 months I rode I spent time almost daily in parking lots practicing. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about when I say figure 8s and things like that. It'll make a difference.

I’m curious cuz I come from a family who doesn’t carry at all and have considered it, but in this situation? What would you do, threaten him and call the cops? I don’t really know what to do in that situation with a gun or not, just wondering what others would do.

That is in South Africa, you can see the 'informal housing' on the opposite side of the road.- Throwing stones is nothing unusual here- they do the same to cars, hoping they can hi-jack of rob you.

Dan, you were with me this past weekend. I hope you read this. I was on a ride with a new riding buddy. It was our first time to cruise together and I could tell they were a newer rider with less experience so we were just out for a casual chill ride. Well, they ended up going down in a corner. To be fair, the corner caught me off guard as well but I have practiced and practiced and have more experience in those moments so I throttled off and leaned more and easily made the corner. They, in my opinion, panic braked and slid the front out and went into a guard rail. She's pretty beat up. Broke both ankles, broke right Tibia. Broke left hand. Dislocated and slightly fractured right shoulder. And cut up her fingers fairly badly. She had on open tipped fingers and your typical horrible thick heavy leather boots from HD that aren't protective at all....but cost you a lot of money. I was the first to get to her and immediately knew her right leg was broke and was bleeding out. I was able to direct some 'helpers' that stopped and got a park ranger to radio emergency signal in. We had no cell phone service in this area and this Park Ranger RANDOMLY pulled up less than 3 min after it happened. Amazing. They also had bleeding kits in their truck that I was able to wrap the leg and slow the bleeding. It was a serious wakeup call for me as I don't keep a first aid kit on my bike and didn't have one with me that day. I didn't honestly own one. I've been watching you for a while now and there is no excuse other than cheapness and laziness that I didn't have a first aid kit with me on that day. We were miles from anything and if random people hadn't stopped and helped guide traffic around the corner we were on then it would have been much worse, I'm sure of it. If the Park Ranger hadn't randomly showed up at that time then I wouldn't have had anything to help slow the bleeding and things might have gotten really bad really quickly. A lot of things fell into place to keep that woman alive that day and you were there with me helping me stay calm and try and do the best I could. Thank you, Dan. She's alright now and is in the healing phase of things. It'll be a tough 2025 for her, she is 71yrs young. Never cried out. Never screamed in pain. Never yelled in anger. Was there and present the entire time. I'm absolutely amazed. They considered air lifting her out at one point but decided it wasn't required. Well, I now own a first aid kit with bleeding bandages and such. If this person ever gets on a motorcycle again then we will be spending A LOT OF TIME in parking lots working on drills and such before ever getting back out on the twisties. I blame myself for not seeing it sooner. Thank you, again, Dan.

I pulled up at a traffic light. I had lane filtered to get to the front of the line. Where I live, it is legal to lane filter when all traffic is moving less than 30Kph. The light changed, I took off. I left the cars well behind me, fairly normal considering I am a fraction of their weight, I can accelerate a lot faster. Down the road a bit, turns out the guy behind me at the lights thought there was a roller coaster in the intersection and he was pissed that I took his seat. He had waited for his turn of that ride and I just jumped the line. He passed me in excess of 90kph in a 60kph zone and cut in front of me to teach me a lesson about driving. As we know, 90% of drivers with anger management problems are the self-appointed educators of the road rules, according to their opinion of how they should be applied. I figured I had two options at this time, 1: Fire up and meet his anger manage problem with my own anger management problem, or 2: Allow him to teach me the lesson and get out of his way. I chose option 2 so that he could go home and tell his mates what a big man he is by teaching a motorcyclist a valuable lesson about imaginary roller coasters and who's turn it is. Meanwhile, I returned to enjoying my ride while keeping him in front of me because while he is in front, I can control his position relative to my own. If he gets behind me, my options become limited. By the way, I am male, 188cm tall, 150kg and a former nightclub bouncer. I avoided the conflict because I have a brain in my head and I am capable of rational thought.

First vid: obviously dude on the side of the road is deranged to be throwing mini bolders into the road, BUT, could the rider have positioned themselves better once they see someone on the side of the road without an obvious vehicle they belong with; unusual item in a usual place = give it more room. Hard to say how visible the guy was behind the overpass and how much difference that would make but still, for any of us who see this, if you have time, give people and cars on the side of the road extra room, it could have been a spare tire rolling into the road at the wrong time... hope the rider was okay, nasty spill. British driver who got rear ended: 100% understand the shock in the moment but he's standing in front of the bike, is holding the handlebar and then just walks away and watches his bike fall - no matter what the situation is, never think you can't make it worse.

The dude was standing at the side of the road pretending that he was waiting to cross the road. He had the rock wrapped up in his jacket. The threat at that particular bridge is usually from above so thats where I was concentrating at the time. The rock hit my front wheel, popped a few spokes which caused my wheel to lock up and threw me over the front at 90 km/h. I managed to get up and was trying to retrieve my bike when his friends showed up trying to grab my stuff. Fortunately other motorists and a truck full of strong helpful guys helped me to fight them off, put my bike on their truck and took me home.

@sayithigher wow dude, thank you for the context! So this was a literal highway robbery attempt? That helps understand what happened, and ultimately, someone with that intent is very hard to plan against. I think giving space to people / cars on the side of the road is always a good idea but there are always other considerations, like in your case you're familiar with the area and known hazards.... Glad you were able to get aome help and get home safe.

The bikers stopping right after a turn where the sun blinds people, is just how we get the news of a car or a truck killing 1to10 people. Get off the road, you just experienced how dangerous that zone is, protect yourself and leave, the other guy is fine and doing a U turn, wait for him in the next straigh line.

Thank you so much for your videos, I have used them to truly reflect on how I use to ride in my early 20s. Was off a bike from 2015 due to Epilepsy, but now that I have it under control and fully diagnosed I am getting back on a bike. Going to be doing the Smart Rider drills to get back into it after many years and putting together my own RESQ pack as sadly being in South Africa shipping and stuff makes your pack just out of reach. I am planning to put your lessons into practice and being a better rider.
