Great video! A small note: Dandies did not have to come from aristocratic backgrounds, and many didn't. Beau Brummell, the progenitor dandy (featured in my profile picture), came from an upper-middle class background. In fact, some dandies explicitly excluded aristocrats from their little inner society, believing that while true aristocrats have the high life at their grasp, they can never appreciate it. The dandy today largely follows this idea. Emulating the aristocratic male, despite not being one. I Am Dandy (or the sequel, We Are Dandy, I forget which) opens with a prologue which describes it not as a movement, but as a mental disorder. I personally fall in line with that sort of thinking. The dandy is an aesthetic and social perfectionist. On a desert island, he would polish his oxfords with squid ink, and use a fish bone as a tie bar. Any other form of living does not exist. The obsessive pursuit of this metaphysical elegance and the high it provides becomes the whole existence of the dandy. Historically, the dandy would never marry. His life is that of one - a spouse just gets in the way of the perfection of self. Personally, although I use the tag of dandyism for my social profiles, I wouldn't dare openly call myself a dandy. As one man put it, "It's like knighting yourself." It's up to others to give you such a title. What I can say is that for me, the pursuit of elegance and the romanticized aristocrat is my life. While I certainly fall short in some areas, and I don't particularly bother with overt nonchalance, my life centers around that very concept. I am naturally an anachronist, an eccentric, and a sort of oddity. But I am happy, and in the end, that's really the goal of life, is it not?

Bravo, Sir! I came here to make similar observations but your eloquence and erudition rendered my twiterpating redundant ..and in all honesty, not as well said. I doff my chapeau to you.

Great video! Really would have liked to see more late 20th century & pop culture interpretations featured though- like Jidenna, André Talley, Dapper Dan or any of the Congo's Sapeurs. Nevertheless thanks for breaking this down so well.

Nice video presentation distilling down to what constitutes a Dandy. Dandyism is a life project for each person who could have this title attached to them. Also it goes much deeper than the external projection of clothing as this is just the presentation to the world around us. The Dandy can and will have a completely separate view of things than a more mainstream person. I can say with out an exception all the Gentlemen I know that follow the Dandy way will be outside the box of normality. Its a life long disorder. But a great disorder to have.

Thank you very much for such an insightful comment! Agree that it goes beyond clothing and these days being a dandy is also about liberating yourself and not caring what anyone else thinks.

You don’t become a dandy, you are born this way. You missed the entire political and self built man with no fucks to give energy that is a dandy.

A fun and inspiring video!⭐ Andre 3000 is also a Dandy or always dressed kind of like one to me. 👍🏾 Thee athlete dressed at a game comes from going to a black church and dressing up on Sunday for service. Husbands and wives would even coordinate their outfits, and wear the same color. Pimps were and can be a dandy in a many of ways as well imo. I wonder if rappers and musicians (like Andree 3000 and Steven Tyler) could be considered a type of dandy? From Flavor Flav to even The Notorious BIG?

At 2:27, you mention that there were no wars or revolutions that took place on British soil. So are you not counting the English Civil War (1642-1651)? Or the War of the Roses (1455-1485)? Perhaps those are too far back in history to have an effect on the development of Dandyism. 🤔 And I'm assuming you're not going to include any of the Jacobite Rebellion in the 1700s because it was in Scotland, which is still British, but not close enough to London to affect the development of Dandyism. Sorry. I don't mean to be pedantic. That line just felt a bit inaccurate and doesn't seem to be a fair rationale for why Dandyism was so prevalent in London.

I think it’s rather referring to the time frame - the wave of inner political uprisings which incurred in many parts of Europe in 1848/49 - especially Germany/Italy still alien occupied countries like Hungary, Poland Belgium … Ireland yes, but England - only the Chartist demo …

So, the decline of dandyism might have helped Coco Chanel to propel a concept of new femininity in fashion design forward after all.. Interesting! Yeah, it seems like many of her monochromatic creations say it all. Your video seems to say, one has a long way to go before being a genuine modern dandy. I would rather renounce a dandy title.. No pain no gain, but looking the part and acting accordingly both sound too difficult.. hehe By the way I saw countless modern dandies during my trip to London years back. Are they born dandyish , or is it just a consequence of their < fake it till you make it> spirit? 😁 The only dandy I know is Jim Dandy.. That dandy was so cool back in his prime..😍 hehe I did enjoy this video, Curious Muse. Thanks for your collections of select videos.☺

So Metrosexual is the Modern Day Dandy? 🤔
@CuriousMuse3 жыл бұрын
We think it's up for debate - some may agree that metrosexual is a latter-day dandy but some will equally disagree.
@JT-rx1eo Жыл бұрын
My view is "yes", metrosexualism is a modern incarnation of Dandyism. At least in part. It MAY discard flamboyance though.
