Nothing will come close to picking up surfer magazine in the 80s-90s for those who know you know. NOTHING compares to the mags in their prime days.

It can be hard to know who the real guys (or gals) are in anything you follow through media. I've known of the Gudauskases for a long time but here I get to see someone who has a foundation, informed perspective, a heart. CI. I'm commenting as I watch...Channel Island is an interesting brand because they've never tried to present as being 'core' or edgy like other brands (think of the videos surf brands put out) but over the years they actually seem more core and more legit than other big standalone global brands. Think of their surfers and how long they've stayed together and you hear a lot of positive stuff from long time pro surfers about working with them, seems like? DG says "I love old things and going slow...I love old volkswagen vans and not getting up to 65 miles an hour." Right on. Such a nice contrast to listening to someone blow on about their bucket list experiences. Sort of like Shane Dorian, it's nice to listen to a real person talk about the stuff they really know about. Take it from the man. And another thing: surfing as a marketplace or a sport has a super broad demographic and a lot of core surfers are older people now, but it seems like the machine is still focused on appealing to frothing young men and boys. Couldn't Vans start doing events and content, gut Tudor and Howard on board, make it good and about the surfing and the community, and sort of take it over? Start in their wheelhouse and then grow into cool specialized events with top surfers like an indo boat trip competition or surfing something freaky and uncomfortable (remember that ASP event in Chile on some rocky slab?). The WSL feels so low energy right now. As a casual fan I care way more about flow and style, then I want exciting waves, and then seeing someone surf in an 'interesting' way like February. Tricks aren't that interesting, I know they're really hard, but I don't that much. WSL: think how far away the WSL and identification with those surfers seem to be drifting away from the 'core' surf culture. Way cooler, I imagine: skating, snowboarding, rock climbing (outside on real rocks), mountain biking all seem like the top level is more connected with the general participant. Who is the fan that the WSL is going for? Highly competitive young surfers? I have no idea from their content but it's not me, I find it unwatchable. He says "Yoga is what's taught me the most." Yoga is the gift giving tree, in my own life I give it all the credit for what is good, and I wait to hear the stories of people who put honest effort into yoga and didn't feel rewarded by it. I like an ancient, non denominational philosophy that is based on self investigation and personal realization and continues to offer ordinary people real support in their crazy modern lives.
