Hail the horns! Dano's radical thumper returns at an ultra-accessible price.
Plywood bodies, lipstick tube pickups, and chicken-head concentric knobs: Danelectro isn't a brand that’s known for playing it safe. Even still, the Longhorn Baritone’s blend of rustic country charm and retro-futurism is just as wild today as it was when the guitar was first released in the ’50s! This bass-meets-guitar design sports a hybrid 29.72-inch scale length - which sits between a standard baritone and a short-scale bass - to cover the deep-sounding B-B range. The Longhorn Baritone’s tonal depth comes out loud and clear through a pair of Danelectro’s legendary high impedance Lipstick pickups, gracing the extended range growl with a touch of chime and jangle. Finally, this Dano’s open and airy tone comes courtesy of its semi-hollow plywood frame, topped with composite hardboard - faithful to the original department-store charm of the original Danelectros! I like it when people still use a amp with a microphone instead of speaker simulator for demos. You can really hear the instrument tones and vibe so much better IMO.

Agreed, as long as they actually mic it properly like this. Instead of chucking a random cheap mic or phone just anywhere across the room and to the side, so it sounds terrible and you can hear the strings buzzing and clicking over top.....in that case I'd rather have an IR of something well known lol

If anyone is looking to upgrade the tuners, they're true 8mm vintage holes and not 10mm, just an FYI. Have the 56, Dano makes some really killer baritones

I love the sound of these and lipstick pickups! Stevie sounded killer on his white strat with lipsticks in it, they scream when you attack the guitar and have a beautiful but not annoying trebly sound.

Thanks John! I've had 5 over the past 6 decades; a Dano Dolphin head '56, a Strat Sub-Sonic (27"), a Jerry Jones Neptune Bass6 (before they went WAY up in price), and finally a Schecter Hellcat VI with tappable mini humbuckers. BUT the Longhorn has always been my favorite - I loved the JJ Neptune! So I'm aiming for one of these reissues.

In the late '90s, I lucked into a Jerry Jones Jupiter longhorn Bass6 for $750 and was thrilled to have it. I'd had a mid '90s Dano single cut with the wood saddle, previously. 2008 came along and I had to sell it. Then it was a Schecter Hellcat VI with mini humbuckers..... had to sell that one, too. Now I'm hoping to get one of these .... It's about time they reissued it, too! Gotta love a longhorn bass six!

One the very best of the online guitar gear reviewers for sure! A few seconds into this review I was thinking, "why play that material on this iconic bass" but my attitude changed as you went on and you eventually hit the solid single low note tones to display what I was hoping to hear from this demo. Just a few long notes held and the added iconic tremolo/vibrato made this review complete imnsho. 😀

Nice choice for an intonation demo...if it sounds in tune on Blackbird, it'll sound good on anything! I love baritones, thanks for the review.

I had one of the 90's re-issues of this model. Fun guitar, but I remember the bridge pickup was very underpowered on those. Couldn't really get enough signal for high gain stuff without using both pickups. This definitely sounds like an improvement.

Baritones are great. I love 'em. I get one....play it for a while...and then it sits. Then gets sold. Repeat as necessary. And the Dano Longhorn will probably be the next baritone on this merry-go-round.

You should demo a guitar clean with no effects, and offer the DI sound and also the miked room sound with an amp. Otherwise, you are wasting our time.
