Maki probably hidden the fact that she’s the ultimate assassin because she just wants to be friends with everyone. To do that, one must gain the trust of others. It’s very easy to trust the ultimate child caregiver, but trusting the ultimate assassin is a totally different story.

I think it’s more that she doesn’t want people to treat her negatively. She is someone who thinks of herself as a monster so everyone being afraid of her will only confirm this for her. We see this play out in chapter 3 when everyone starts avoiding her. While I think the friends thing could be a small part of it. I feel like Maki thinks of herself as someone not worthy of having them because of her career.
