@@DangarMarine hello! I want to thank you for all the clear and detailed videos you carefully put together every week. Recently I bought a used 2000 model 15hp Suzuki outboard. This is my the first outboard and needless to say it was full of surprises. I have had to des assemble the whole thing except the engine internal parts. Thanks to you I was able to breakdown the lower unit which was a complete mess. Luckily I was able to salvage the gears, the prop shaft and many other components. I recently ordered an after market bearing carrier and it’s supposed to be a good fit, I did find that the prop shaft doesn’t easily go in. The old one has more play in it which I attribute to being old. I’m ordering all new seals, bearing and shims and begin the rebuilding process. I would like to have your opinion in perhaps gently sand down at least a millimeter of the new bushing of the bearing carrier so that the prop would slide thru easily. Again, thanks for all the insight your share with us in every video. I am going to make a compilation of the whole job and send it to you if it’s possible. I’m just waiting put it all together and try to put this thing in the water to see how it goes :( :) thanks!

Good evening, I have a 4.5 HP Johnson outboard that has a stuck driveshaft. I’ve let it soak with P-Blaster for over a week, I’ve made a puller and tried to pull it out of the powerhead with no results. My question is can I reassemble the impeller & lower unit from the bottom so I don’t have to scrap the whole outboard?

Love your LU videos Bud! It seems like your channel was the first to really show people what's inside a gearbox and how they work. To a lot of people (myself included) any work needed to be done, besides an oil change was a DO NOT ATTEMPT scenario and bring it to the dealership. It still can overwhelming to some even after your videos, but now I know when the time comes to change my seals I won't be as intimidated! What is that type of bearing puller called in the automotive world? I'm will be buying one soon and would like to know which kind to buy. Would the sliding puller be ok, or a turning style(like the one in the vid) be better? Thanks Stu keep it up Bud!!!
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim. For outboards, this type of puller is available www.ebay.com.au/itm/JOHNSON-EVINRUDE-OMC-BRP-OUTBOARD-UNIVERSALPULLER-KIT-WITH-LIFTING-RING-378103/302697225255?epid=1977791536&hash=item467a291c27:g:0yIAAOSwstxU90eP I'm pretty sure that one I used was sold as an outboard puller, I'm not sure where I got it from now. In the auto world you tend to mostly see harmonic balancer pullers around which can be used for bearing carriers in a pinch.

Great videos and very helpful . I was wondering when would you replace water pump puller and seal ? I believe I have 1979 Johnson 55 hp. Also any service that needs to be done yearly or 10 /20 years ? When I bought the boat from my neighbor all the data plate are gone off the motor so I have no why in telling the exact year or model
@georgekeats1478
@georgekeats1478 6 жыл бұрын
A trick I use to date motors is to do a search in Google Images. I type in, for example, 1979 55hp Johnson, and see what comes up. If it's not exact then change the year until you find a photo that matches what you have. I recently did this to "age" a 1970 28hp Johnson. If you dont know where to start then use this handy chart: www.maxrules.com/OMCplugchart.html Good luck with the search. George in St. Catharines, ON Canada

Great videos thank you. Do you have a video or any tips on removing a stuck outboard propeller? Not sure if brute force with a hammer and timber block will destroy the seals or propeller blades?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 4 жыл бұрын
The safest way is to use a propeller puller which unfortunately is a tool you are likely to only need once in your life. Failing that try hammering on the blades using a block of soft wood and tapping on each blade in turn to balance the load.

I have a few questions. I just followed this video to replace my prop shaft due to bearing and shaft pitting (1987 Evinrude 20hp). I was able to do this without removing the lower unit from the engine. Upon removal the spring and two balls came out. Do they go up inside the pinion gear shaft? What are the function of them? Do they hold something or act as a detent? Do you have the assembly video for this? Thank you sooo much for your efforts and time. This was the only vid I could find with my particular style lower end.

That is unfortunately one of the tougher parts to get apart if it is corroded stuck as you can't get to it to apply any real force or heat. Tipping it upside down and running some PB blaster down the drive shaft with a straw fitting can help.

With spark plugs in the extra compression makes it harder to turn the motor so it could be a weak starter motor or a bad electrical connection between the starter and the battery or the battery itself is weak.

Hey Bruce, I have suffered from this a few times recently. Really what I like to have is a wind-up jockey wheel that is tall enough to lift the boat right off the hitch. Unfortunately the hitch is quite high on my truck so that doesn't always work depending on the trailer, but if it is your trailer and you can set it up with a jockey wheel that will do the track it is by far the best way to go.

Bruce- how heavy is the boat and trailer? the rough guide is 10% of the towed mass to be on the tow hitch, but that only works for things like box trailers, caravans, car trailers and boat trailers with inboard engined boats. Boats with outboards set up a unique load balance setup for the trailer. I find that about 40-50Kg (mine is a bit light at 20kg, but I have no stability problems when towing at 110Kph) on the ball is enough for almost all outboard boat trailers because the trailer axles are typically at about the 80-90% total length point. That gives a very long /narrow triangle which is inherently stable , most other trailers have their axles at about the 60% point of their overall length. So basically what I am suggesting is that you may be able to move your trailer axle / s forward and take some of that ball load off the vehicle. Also check your tow ball is the right size ( you can get a 52mm ball into a 50mm hitch if you try hard enough) and the slack adjuster on the hitch is not too tight ( may be one for Stu to do a video on)

Where do the spring and balls go please
@DangarMarine

There is a hole in the prop shaft - one ball goes in, then the spring, then the other ball.

here is a trick you will never forget. When the bearing carrier is being stubborn, forget the pullers and slide hammers and torches. remove shift shaft. Place small blocks of wood in frond of gear housing. put prop back on with washer and nut. tighten nut. it will come right out.

So this would be pulling on the propshaft itself?
@kylewalker7072
@kylewalker7072 6 жыл бұрын
yes. it pulls the prop shaft that then pulls the carrier out. But you must first remove the shift shaft....on most models anyway
