@Stickalas The initial acceleration that allows you to leave the ground would be faster than the speed that the elevator is falling at. The problem is that if you're standing in an elevator that is falling at 100mph, then you are also falling at 100mph. If you jump off from an elevator whilst falling at that speed than all that will happen is you'll shave off one or two mph for the split second that you're in the air, and then you'll land and be matching the speed of the elevator again.

@Stickalas Which means that even if you do time your jump perfectly, at the exact time that the elevator connects with the bottom of the shaft, then you'll still hit the floor of the elevator at over 90mph. Which isn't ideal. Thankfully elevators have emergency brakes to stop that from happening though :)

Nah, you're moving down at the same speed as the elevator; you won't hit your head unless you jump high enough to hit your head. If you jump you're just going to end up smooshed on the floor anyway.
