Danger Stalks the Serengeti

On March 2018, we journeyed to the Serengeti in hopes of photographing the Wildebeest calving season. On particular day, we watched nature at its cruelest . . . two male cheetahs stalked and killed two baby wildebeest. Our guide told us that many baby wildebeest get lost from the herd. While the cheetahs were eating the first baby wildebeest, another lost baby wildebeest wandering into danger.

They were having a good meal but the chase instinct was just too strong. That instinct just would not allow them to not chase the calf when it started running. Domesticated cats have that same instinct.

The second calf had had enough of its miserable life and after having gone through several failed attempts at taking its own life decided to play the right card and entice a couple of cheetas from an unsafe distance.

Isso acontece, muitas vezes a noite, quando bando é atacado por leões, hienas, entre outros predadores, e há uma debandada geral e muitas vezes a mãe é separada do filhote. Quando o dia amanhece, o bando de gnus andou para um lado e o bebê andou para outro e nesse tempo aparecem os predadores diurnos, que quando surge uma oportunidade dessa de se alimentar, não deixam passar. Um banquete fácil para o animal mais rápido da savana africana. Isso acontece todos os dias, seja dia ou noite, pois os gnus passam em territórios de predadores durante sua migração e são sempre atacados e muitos se perdem. Infelizmente, mas acontece muito entre dezembro e fevereiro, quando é época do nascimentos dos bebês gnus. Até eles atingirem uma idade de 8 meses estão sujeitos a isso. Ainda bem que são milhares de nascimentos, cerca de 300 a 500 mil nascimentos nessa época. É muito mais do que os predadores podem comer. Mas alguns milhares cairão na boca desses predadores. Os gnus estão sempre em busca de melhores pastagens e andam milhares de quilômetros atrás de pastos verdes. Muitos filhotes morrem de um jeito muito pior que esse, que é quando são predados por hienas ou cães selvagens, que se alimentam sempre da parte traseira primeiro, indo para o estômago e só quando atingem as partes vitais é que o animal morre ou por perda significativa de sangue. isto é, com o animal ainda vivo. Isso vale para adultos e filhotes. É o jeito que a natureza deu a esses predadores de matarem a presa! Muitos tem os olhos arrancados ainda vivo. Haja sofrimento.

The first Wildebeest calf was dead when the second cheetah brother took out after the second calf. It is sad but all part of nature.
