We completed a domestic EICR at a property after previously getting called out to a faulty socket, upon testing the socket came back with a ZS of 95.4 Ohms so I recommended an EICR, this has to be the worst property I have seen! I have a huge suspicion that the homeowner completed the work himself!
Note: we issued an Electrical Danger Notification for this job the next day and got it signed by the customer.

I know this EICR was lengthy largely because you wanted to video it. But I think you had sufficient information within 10 minutes to condemn the installation. There should be a mechanism to inform the DNO of a dangerous installation so they take out the service fuse.

That house would have been sold to an unsuspecting buyer at some point. It's why house sellers should been legally required to have the EICR done when selling. I went to look at a house for sale and traced the consumer unit serving the garage back to a 13 amp plug in the kitchen hidden under the sink! Of course the cable running JUST under the lawn wasn't armoured, why would it be?

Long before the sparkie in van's left seat said at 12:38 "It needs a rewire", that is what I was saying. That mess of uncoordinated and bad wiring is an extreme hazard, and the main power should be disconnected pending remedial work.
@DoctorElectricYouTube
@DoctorElectricYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan and thanks for watching, yes 100% needs a rewire, unfortunately as I understand, the worst we can do is to issue an Electrical Danger Notification, we don't have the power to disconnect an electrical supply. EDN's aren't worth the paper they're written on to be honest though, the client is supposed to comply with it but I've never heard of anyone being fined or taken to court for it, it's just to cover our backside
@JamieRyan92
@JamieRyan92 3 жыл бұрын
I've seen much worse than that... That RCD wasn't even doing anything as the outgoing side was linked with the main switch. I don't bother with those little socket testers, never had a reliable one... One I had years ago was bleeping and lighting up yet the circuit was in fact actually dead. It was picking up an induced current from a cable running parallel to it... Always use the MFT. I'd be writing a danger notice to cover your back.

Had similar on the house I bought. JBs off JBs, singles going through walls near nails. Lights bodged with no CPCs. Big open holes through to the busbar on the fuseboard. No RCDs. First job on buying the house was power off and get a quote for a rewire I had to work off rechargeable work lights for a week whilst we ripped all the kitchen, carpets and wood panelling on the walls out before the electrician got in to rewire. So glad we did that. I now have electrics I'm confident in. I'm just glad the previous homeowner didn't have a gas boiler. Something tells me he would've DIY'd that. I'll DIY most things, but there are two things I won't go near. Always get qualified competent people in to do the electrics and the gas.

Pin sleeving on plug top is for a PAT test as it’s not part of the installation. Issues with polarity... get your multifunction/loop impedance metre on it as socket testers often give mixed results. On a fail... first C1 or C2 I see, I’m on the phone to the customer telling them it’s a fail & asking if they want me to continue. If they say no or refuse to have immediate rectification work done, call the power distributor to arrange disconnection. If the client is vulnerable, call the council & explain they’ll need emergency rehoming. Single RCD boards with new colours were commonplace until the 17th Edition. Are you working on Elm Street by any chance? 😂😂😂
@DoctorElectricYouTube
@DoctorElectricYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathon and thanks for the great comment. You're completely right in that the plug top doesn't form part of the EICR and I didn't include it in the observations, I think I used the wrong terminology, I was just trying to show Adam the old style plug tops. If I would've stopped the EICR then I wouldn't be able to justify my fee and also we wouldn't have had our most successful video yet. The Client isn't vulnerable and all I can do is to advise the customer through the EICR, I'm not speaking to councils etc. I simply don't have the time or the inclination with this visit. I know about single RCD's as I have seen loads but as you can see it was bypassed(I suspect by mistake). Thanks for watching!

@@DoctorElectricKZbin We all have our own way of working these situations. I do offer PAT tests alongside EICRs & recommend them in the notes of the report highlighting that issues were observed, etc.. A bit of a nightmare (this the Elm St quote). I know sparks that have taken the cutout fuse in such situations. Most of my inspections are on commercial properties & there, it’s an automatic referral to the council who arrange for the premises to be closed. Only ever had a couple of shorted RCDs on inspections, but plenty of disconnected earths! In those circumstances, you can pretty much guarantee that the electric would have been back on 5 mins after you left. I just ensure I cover my own back by calling the board...

@@ianwilliamson7703 Sadly I have,old house,it had a collection of wooden fuse boxes each with glass window lid, & ceramic rewirable fuses around the house, several Revo splitters (fused neturals), & old wood based Wylex fuseboxes, & the cabling in the attic was bare of rubber & no braid on conductors due to it's age.

@@stuartandrews4344 I've only seen this, during house clear-outs, I suppose you have to admire the mechanics of these wooden consumer units, with their ceramic rewireable fuses, Safety is paramount, hence the necessity of the EICR.

New fuseboxes are more sensitive 😅🙈 sounds like a plumbers explanation. Absolutely nothing to do with sensitivity

You are correct, you know that and I know that, but how do I explain that in laymans terms to a customer? you have to try to let them know in a way that they understand, thanks for watching

I have been doing electronics for over 25 years, now i have wired up the odd transformer for my 12volt projects or putting on a new plug on a extension lead but THATS my limit, F@#KING hell that customer needs to stay the F@#K away from electrical. I would not let that bloke touch a 12volt outlet in fear he will stuff that up too.

Pity there is no "condemned" label you could put over the lid of the CU so they have to remove the label to open the cover to turn everything back on. My concern would also be for the neighbours, if it's a semi detached or terace property as a fire puts them in danger too. Whole house stinks of it'll do, but not right , Plumbing , electrics the lot.

P.S. I remember my grandmother's house wiring being condemned in the 80's, not sure who had the power to do that. Amongst other things she had round brass electrical light switches,which she cleaned everyday, it turns out the lights were installed using neutral switching, the exposed metal work was part of the neutral circuit, so if a fault had developed in the neutral feed she'd have been touching live via the bulb. Apparently it was normal practice in the 40/50's to do it that way. Bizarre Jeremy

Electric isn't 3 cables just 2. Don't worry a bought which way round it will probably work fine. Looks like the reason why the rcd doesn't work is because it's bypassed by the bus bar comeing from the main incomer
