Ok that is disturbing... The green flame colour could be Zinc, which would match up well with the conductivity measurement and the low melting point. But seriously, not even the chinese would resort to sending people cables made of ZINC would they!?
@DiodeGoneWild6 жыл бұрын
I didn't notice any green flame. Did you? But maybe they just came accross a lot of scrap zinc... It could also be some alloy of 2 or 3 metals like Copper + Aluminium + Iron. Some alloys of iron may not be magnetic...
@mortlet51806 жыл бұрын
DiodeGoneWild; You might be right about the iron alloy. The blueish-green colour is just there for a moment, left of the main lighter flame, which makes me suspicious that it could be a galvanized alloy. It could also have come from copper, but if so, then why does the colour only happen for a moment once you heat a piece of wire up? The coppery colour was underneath of the silver, so should theoretically be present in the bulk material. Also, I really don't think they would use copper in the bulk of the wire, since brass, bronze or some copper-iron alloy would be more expensive than simple aluminium or even copper coated aluminium.
@mortlet51806 жыл бұрын
DiodeGoneWild; Could you perhaps find a piece of the wire which is still unburnt, and put it into some vinegar? Seeing which part of the wire (if any) reacts, should help narrow it down quite a bit. (Sorry if I'm being overly neurotic about this... I just really dislike unsolved mysteries XD)
@DiodeGoneWild6 жыл бұрын
I've just put it into vinegar. No immediate reaction. Let's wait what happens.
@mortlet51806 жыл бұрын
DiodeGoneWild; Awh, it probably isn't Zinc then. I think you're right on about it being iron based. Sorry for the wild goose chase, and thank you very much for accommodating my curiosity. :) This next part is purely speculation for interest's sake. I'm obviously not suggesting that you spend even more time on this than you already have.: (The simplest confirmatory test that I can think of, would be to precipitate the Fe as its hydroxide. However, that would require dissolving the wire in a strong acid, like swimming pool HCl or H2SO4 (or perhaps just electrolyzing some acidified salt water to corrode the anode?), and then basifying the solution with drain cleaner NaOH, also known as caustic soda, to look for a brown precipitate. Unfortunately, I'm an electrical engineer, so my chemistry knowledge is somewhat lacking...)

I get the impression this extension cord was weight optimized. Obsiously thinner wires are cheaper, but the costs savings are small and wether the cable costs €2 or €2,10 won't hurt sales that much. However, weight is a big factor: In order to be able to get it delivered for free to your door, it is necessary that it is matches the international postal rules for letters. International treaties require postal services to deliver letters for relatively low prices and this is the mechanism that allows for the free delivery. But in order to be accepted as a letter, the cable has to fit in a max weight. The free delivery does make a big difference in sales and therefore perfectly explains the chocie for an extremly thin cable. There is a quite perverted mechanism at work here: Producers adjust to the rules of the market. The market demands weight optimization and producers are willing to sacrifice safety in order to reduce weight.

I have the 16A circuit breaker :). If someone in the UK plugs a EU appliance using a cheap adapter, it's only fused by the 32A breaker. The same applies to dodgy appliances with UK plug, but no fuse in it. In any country, people have to be a bit wary what they plug in. Is brass really used for conductors? It's more expensive yet less conductive than aluminium. To me it doesn't make much sense. And also using just pure copper, you make a wire of the same resistance, but thinner and cheaper.
@zx8401ztv6 жыл бұрын

@Vinyl Hendrickx A 50m reel (1.5mm2 copper) has a total resistance of 1Ohm. A short circuit on the end of that cable will give you a peak current of over 200A which is more than enough to trip your 20A breaker (might even trip the main breaker). Most of those reels have a builtin breaker (the little red button that pops and can be reset). There are also some smaller reels (10m) using only 0.75mm2 copper and even those should be safe to use as long as you don't chain a bunch of those or overload them (check the rating on the reel).

In the US it is very common to see extension cords without fuses that aren't rated for the circuit breakers capacity but at least they're not nearly as bad as the one shown in this video. I occasionally buy some clip leads from China. I have received some CCA ones (copper clad aluminium) but also tinned or copper plated iron ones. You can recognize the last ones easily - the wire is attracted by magnets. When they inevitably break (either by running more than 2 amps through it, or because the connection between wire and clip breaks) i just replace it with some salvaged proper coper wire. Proper clip leads are hard to find - the local electronics shop also sells the chinese ones that quickly break - although they do use copper wire.

16 Ampere MCB is quite large size for potentiating single phase 230V circuits in homes! I guise your building wiring size is like Germany 4 mm2 that allow 16 Ampere fuse for protection. Her in Denmark in old building the wire size is 1 mm2 in single phase 230V circuits, and the maximum allowed fuse size for protection of the circuit is 10 Ampere. In new buildings the minimum allowed wire size is 1.5 mm2 for single phase 230V circuits, and the maximum allowed fuse size for protection of the circuit is 13 Ampere. 2.5 mm2 wires are only used in 3 phase 400 V circuits like the electric stoves, dryer, water heater etc... and the maximum allowed fuse size for protecting this circuits are 16 Ampere. 4 mm2 and 6 mm2 are not used in residential buildings, only in commercial buildings and industry for supplying 3 phase 400V power for heavy loads like industrial washing machines, dishwasher, electric stoves etc…
@DiodeGoneWild6 жыл бұрын
In Czech republic, the appartments with gas supply have 1 phase intake (not so much power needed for stove, heating, hot water...), the ones with no gas supply have 3 phase intake. The main breaker before the electricity meter is 25A or 3x 25A and the wire is 4 mm2. Then this goes into a box with numerous breakers, usualy one for each room. The sockets have 16A class B breakers and 2.5 mm2 wires. The light circuit usually has two breakers, one for bathroom+toilet and one for the rest of the appartment. Those two light breakers are usualy 10A B and the wire is 1.5 mm2. Until recently, we used only breakers. Few years ago, additional RCD's (GFI's) became compulsory for more safety. But appartments from before 2015 often have no RCD. And appartments from before 1996 have the dreaded wiring with ground and neutral being just a single wire, used for both grounding and as a return of live. So called PEN wire. When this wire accidentally breaks or a screw terminal becomes loose, the the ground in all sockets becomes live via the impedance of the appliances :).

Have you ever seen a plastic insulated cable which was flammable?

Good maths theory and practical demonstration but it's irrelevant for UK. The cable would not catch fire in the UK because UK plugs (BS1363) are fitted with an internal cartridge fuse (BS1362); which have a maximum value of 13 Amps. The Fuse Operation Characteristics of an internal cartridge fuse (BS1362) state that it will go open circuit at about 1.66 times its rated value, so for a 13 Amp fuse this will be 21.6 Amps As the calculated short circuit current is 41 Amps (230V / 5.6 Ohms = 41 Amps) the fuse in the UK plug would provide overload protection.

If the wire is 3m long you need to multiply by 2 or doesn't that matter for AC ?

I think this was made only to feed the Christmas LED lights LOL
