A few of them use joystick controls for steering, not steering wheels. The likes of Skid Steers, Excavators & some Forklifts. So technically speaking, they wouldn't be behind the wheel, but of course I know what you mean.

True for many of the fails, but not all. Some of the ones that topple because of weight loads being exceeded or shifting, they could've been anticipated. Also, some cranes have sensors that send feedback to the software, that in turn warns the operator when approaching load limits.
