Apart from the fact that, if not for intellectuals, this would have occurred in a cave, wearing game pelts, without a camera recording it. What she is really eluding to is that intellectuals can be so preoccupied with more 'intellectual' matters than they can complete fail to observe, empathize with, and understand social situations, impairing their ability to develop 'social smarts' ...another form of intelligence entirely.

Grand Inquisitor I totally agree. In fact, is what I've seen in my lifetime. Some intellectuals, especially university professors and colleagues at the law school who are academically smart people, but that totally ignore human relationships and human emotions. It's really a totally different form of intelligence, linked to the ability of observation, to translate what people say and find out what they hide .

She plays this so brilliantly. The dialogue by itself is just great, but that vulnerable, almost joyous look she gives John Malkovich made me fall in love with her character. She could've easily played her as a heartless bitch, but she really painted a much more complex character with her portrayal.

I like how she explains that she had to become manipulative given the fact that women were (are) offered much more limited and constrictive social roles. Despite what people call her' cruelty' I can't help but admire her fighting spirit and her strength of character. She's the perfect example proving that life is never simple and that 'good' and 'bad' don't always describe what truely goes on.

kevdawg55 LOL...she may not have been the most aesthetically beautiful character but there was obviously something about her that made people gravitate towards her. Despite her calculating and scheming ways, maybe she had immense sex appeal? There are some people out there that aren't exactly oil paintings but have an aura and natural mystique that just draws people in. I think it's a rare quality, regardless of looks.

+Eccentricka1 As Emily Rose Dawson says, there is a reason for her actions, which she explains in this scene. She hates the role women have been relegated to in this society, and in her own way is seeking revenge on men because of it. Valmont is probably the only man in her life to treat her as an equal despite her gender, and I think perhaps that is why in the end she was disappointed in him because of his treatment of other women, namely Cecile and more importantly Madame Tourval. She was testing him, and in the end he failed her test, which led to the tragic ending for all the characters.

One of my favorites. You have to pay attention to follow the plot. There are many delicious twists and turns. It also has one of the most satisfying endings. The final fade-out with Glenn Close is haunting and mesmerizing.

Hi Tonmandude, they are shown writing letters in the film but the book itself is constructed entirely of letters. It's called an epistolary novel and it's a form that seemed to be popular in the 18th Century. Samuel Richardson's book 'Clarissa' is also in the same format and has similar themes. In fact, one commentator had worked out that if Clarissa, the main character, had written that many letters she would have to be writing for around eight hours each day!

What's relevant here in inventing yourself is to get the tools- in her case the moralist, philosopher, novelist. You can't be successful without the tools. A modern example would be The Road Less Travelled where Scott A. Peck wrote probably the most fundamental habit to practice: Delayed Gratification.

MY FAV SCENE IS at the end when she buckles uncontrolably turns away from the audience allowing them to steal her freedom to choose to be strong against their condeming looks of disdain that she knows they know and with that she lets them win justifying their judgement which she portrays earlier as an impossible power for anyone to have over her. She let down her guard, herself and let them make her feel embarrassed and ashamed for living.
