Used to have a sub simulator few years back, don't remember the title but loved it. I just ordered this game because of the different platforms available. Now I'm like a kid waiting for Santa to visit my mailbox. I was a submariner in the USN back in the 80's so a game like this is like reliving my Navy days. Very well done on the tutorial. Plan on watching all of them before the game arrives.

idk if anyones told you or you found out but the "speed" indicator you refer to is an engine order telegraph (EOT for short). saw it on steam and wondered what it was so I found you. im actually super happy that your rudder indicator doesn't function as a rate of turn indicator which really shows they did their research. $15 on steam tho for a 2005 game is kinda meh for price in my opinion tho. def add on my wish list. thanks so much.
@FPSchazly7 жыл бұрын
thank you for that! i had yet to look it up lol. yeah, the rudder indicator functions as rate of turn for sub command, but in Dangerous Waters they model it as applying a force, which is good. the price does seem high for 2005, but it's still the most recent modern submarine simulator, and (for a less relevant comparison) it's less than the price of two chipotle burritos for many more hours of enjoyment lol

good comments here, that 'arm' coming out an angle under the screw is called a 'stabilizer'. Other kinds of stabilizers are H like vertical fins on the outer edge of the stern planes. Good video.
@FPSchazly10 жыл бұрын
Fire Hazard Studios interesting, i thought it was just a means for mounting the towed array. why have it, though, when you have two stern planes and a rudder back there? i'm assuming there's an advantage to having something just sticking in the water, for lack of a better term, that isn't a control surface.
@SubBrief10 жыл бұрын
Well, now we are getting into Naval Architecture which is complex stuff. But the 688 (first flight) had so much Horse Power that they could list the entire submarine about 15 degrees during a Flank bell. So, later flights had a stabilizer 'arm' added to the stern that added 'resistance' to Listing. (Listing is when a boat/ship leans to one side). Hope that helps.
@FPSchazly10 жыл бұрын
it's all good, throw the technical terms at me haha i had an internship dealing with naval architecture. i know for the longest time, people thought the 688s had those H style stabilizers but no pictures I've ever seen of an LA supports that sentiment. I've found the Ohio does have those so maybe that's where the confusion comes from.

slight correction: that long bulge on the starboard hull is where the TB-16 towed array is stored ......... the hull array on the 688 is actually on the bow Thanks for the tuts tho! just got DW yesterday, but I've been playing since 688(i) at least 15 yrs ago :D ....... DW is certainly more complex

artao5 Hey, thanks. Do you have a source on that? I want to make sure I haven't told thousands of people such an obviously wrong thing. DW is indeed complex and perhaps that's why I like it lol Glad you like the tuts.
@artao510 жыл бұрын
GAH!! It took me awhile to find an online source LOL ........... If you have Tom Clancy's book "Submarine," there's diagrams in there that show the exterior layout; but I couldn't find any diagrams like that online However, here's two text sources re: the towed array storage sheath Search here for "tb-16" .. you'll find, "The TB-16 is a heavier array that is stored in a sheath along the submarine’s hull. TB-23 is a thin-line array that can be reeled into the ship’s main ballast tanks." what-when-how.com/military-weapons/sonars-military-weapons/ And here it talks about how the TB-16 is deployed by "flushing" it from its stowage tube. quote: "Submarines deploy fat-line towed-arrays using a process known as flushing, wherein water is pumped into the fat-line stowage tube to exert pressure upon and hence deploy the fat-line towed-array." www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/systems/towed-array.htm I couldn't find the info about the flank array being on the bow however. I may be mistaken about that, but I swear I saw a diagram showing that that's where the hull array is. .. maybe that was on the Virginia class tho. Now I'm confused LOL
@FPSchazly10 жыл бұрын
Nice, I have that book somewhere. It's probably at my parents house. I think the confusion is from the fact that the Virginia does not have a traditional spherical bow sonar like the LA. I believe that little bulge disk thing at the bottom of the forward hull is the new bow array.
@artao510 жыл бұрын
AHA!!! I was indeed mistaken regarding the flank array -- at least partially. Sorry, my mistake :D Actually, it appears that the flank array is indeed distributed along the sides, from bow to stern, and spaced for ideal localization performance. www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/systems/an-bqg-5.htm
@artao510 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The Virginia class is quite the platform. I quite look forward to an in-depth sim modeling. it. ... For now, we can use the RA/DWX mod to play the Virginia using a Seawolf interface. (in Dangerous Waters, that is ..... in Sub Command it's in the SCXIIc mod)

I didn't see in the video, what do the purple lines i see on the map mean? Like between ownship and other vessels
@FPSchazly6 жыл бұрын
Any colored line between you and a contact signifies only bearing to the contact, not range, is known. The color of the line also tells you which sensor detected the contact, purple means the towed array, white means bow sonar, blue means hull sonar. All contacts with colored lines are shown as 10 nmi away but this means nothing in terms of its actual range. Once you or the auto TMA enter in a solution, the colored line goes away, because now you're telling the computer you think you know the range

Hi FPS. I am currently playing quick missions trying to learn the ropes of the sim. I have just raised my radio mast and received a transmission that orders me to conduct a search in area [51-45 S, 056-00 W] to [51-56 S, 055-40 W] and clear the area of all hostile surface contacts. How do I work out where these coordinates are on the map so I can set a course?
@FPSchazly7 жыл бұрын
bring the navigation map [F5 screen] to full size and place your cursor on the map. in the lower left corner, it will show the latitude and longitude of your cursor.
@FPSchazly7 жыл бұрын
odds are the mission starts with you in those coordinates, it's just bounding your search area. also, quick missions are notorious for being silly or unrealistic. I would try and stick to single missions or the campaign. quick missions can be like trial by fire, they throw you in.

***** Hey need help with one more thing. In your RSR tutorials I think it was Bastion gambit that was ridiculously hard....you did like 8 videos for it and couldn't beat it. Some how you were able to bring up the next mission in the campaign in the single mission section so you could play on. How can I do that? I lost all my saved RSR progress as well as the missions Ive completed, so by default it is making me start the whole campaign over. Thanks!
@FPSchazly9 жыл бұрын
John Calus Well, I would do it in campaign mode. If you do well in earlier missions by destroying more stuff, you'll have less to deal with in later missions. if you do it in quick mission mode, it won't keep track of any of this stuff, so every single mission will be as hard as it possibly can be, regardless of how you played previous missions. that being said, if you go back to your scenario folder, there should be a .zip file in there called RSR single missions or something. unzip that folder and bring its content into the Scenario folder and then you can access the campaign as quick missions.

John Calus I don't have enough time in them to say one way or the other. There are a few features in stock Dangerous Waters that you can use to your advantage, such as a first frequency of 50 Hz on a sonar readout almost always means you're dealing with a non-American submarine. I think in both LWAMI and RA they change the frequencies to be more unique than that. The SUBSIM forums will have more detailed responses about it. I know LWAMI's focus is supposed to be more Sonar realism.
@FPSchazly9 жыл бұрын
John Calus Also, in stock DW, torpedoes are foiled by counter-measures at a very very high rate. I'm pretty sure that's wiped out in RA and probably in LWAMI, as well.

It is doing my head in. I cant taget them beyond "snapshot" Please help. @FPSchazly7 жыл бұрын
thank you! glad you like them. be sure to check the RA weapons manual found in the Manual folder of your Dangerous Waters directory. For TLAMs, the destruct range corresponds to which waypoint the target is at. So, if your destruct range is set to 1 nmi, the missile will set its target as the first waypoint. If the destruct range is set to 2 nmi, the missile will set the second waypoint as its target, etc.

Ah ok....should be job done. Also when i put in some of the frigate games from sub sim such as " Caper Focus"....It says "platform not chosen" or something like that. Does this just mean that the scenario is not compatable with RA 1.42 or is there a way around it? It does not seen to be a problem with sub scenarios

it's because in RA, the oliver hazard perry is split into an AI unit and a PLAYABLE unit, whereas in the stock dangerous waters game, they were one in the same. So, if you edit the mission and just change the perry from the AI version to the Player version, it will work.

Ok....Sorry to be a pain but could you run that past me again. I have loaded Caper focus back into the scenario folder. What can i use to open the caper focus file and exactly what do i need to to to edit the mission once i am in? Cheers Ramius!

Ok got it....See what you mean. Went into Mission editor and changed the ship profile to user and clicked "controllable platform"...It works....Many thanks. Awsome. Love RA 1,42

I wish this game worked on Windows 8. :-( Had I known it doesn't I'd have stuck with Windows 7.

i stuck with windows 7 either way ;) if you have an old computer with an older operating system on it, you could try a dual-boot on your own computer, or you could buy a copy of windows 7 for like 100 bucks.

The AI for submarines is really horrible, when he detects a torpedo, he just launches a torpedo AND HEADS TO FULL SPEED? My torpedo picks up the louder submarine not the decoy, xD
@FPSchazly8 жыл бұрын
That is the proper doctrine haha. Although, the enemy submarine is probably heading *directly* away from your torpedo. The best course of action is to run *perpendicular* to a torpedo. Decoys can be "active" or "passive" decoys. One emits bubbles to make a big active sonar target, one emits really loud noise to make a big passive sonar target. For the newer submarines in this game, decoys will be bigger or louder targets than the submarines from which they've been launched.

Too complicated. Definitely will look at cold waters instead.

you know where to come if you want complicated :3

@@FPSchazly Yes I do. I was a reactor operator on a Sturgeon Class fast attack sub. I don't want to know all that sonar stuff, even though it is interesting.

There are many different kinds of towed arrays and some are better at things then others....that's all I'll say about that.
@FPSchazly10 жыл бұрын
Fire Hazard Studios yeah, i believe this gets sorted out in a later tutorial, but in this game, the 688i has both toweds modeled as the same one whereas the seawolf has a tb-26 (24?) and a tb-16 and the tb 20 whatever is more geared for low speeds whereas the tb-16 is better for higher speeds.
