You really should consider using the "Aegis" option on the lady that gives you the legendary weapons, specially if you intend to play on hard mode. edit: The mini bosses in hard mode are brutal. They unlock items when you defeat them though. You can also unlock some more items by beating kaminela (the demon last boss) with other skins.

So, quick pair of tips for you DF: First, a lot of other people are talking about it and suggesting it, but the Aegis mechanic is extremely useful. The fact that it takes a lot of grinding to max out, due to it resetting your level from 30 to 1 each time, but it adds 1 starting skill point for each level of Aegis. Not to mention, as others are mentioning, at the max of 5 levels of Aegis it gives you a large stat boost. Something I haven't seen much mention of, though, is the "Greed" skill tree. It gives you a boost of 2 max health for each level, but the real power of it is the passive at 10 skill points invested, which gives you 25 extra maximum satiety. Using Aegis to get the extra 5 skill points really pays off in that case, which lets you have the 5 skill point passive bonus from one tree, the 10 point passive from the Greed tree, AND still have the 20 skill point passive from the Mystic tree so that you can take an item from each run to the next one. Not to mention, more satiety means more food, which means more stat bonuses! Suffice to say: Maximum Aegis mixed with the 10 point passive from the Greed skill tree, the 20 point passive from the Mystic skill tree, and another 5 point passive from any tree is VERY powerful...

Using 20 Greed (the fourth tree) and I don't have any issues getting strong, that one accessory slot is very useful and for me much better than the one item you can return with

Df, regardless of boss fights or not, those dual swords are the best, or atleast better than anything you got so far, for all enemies. The attack speed works differently than you think. You gain attack speed for each landed hit, and lose the attack speed when you stop attacking. Note, you lose it when you stop attacking, not when you stop hitting enemies. So long as you keep in the attacking animation, you will never lose the attack speed. Furthermore, with hp being restored every crit, you can make a crit build with basically no defence and tank through everything. It takes little minions down so quickly, just as fast a bosses. Just start attacking and don't stop. Need to get around fast? Use the dash and keep on attacking

Ok after playing the game myself I have some newfound respect for DF. He may be an idiot but he definitely perseveres. Hard mode is indeed very hard and those trials are hell. I hate to admit that I'm a worse gamer than DF, but that's apparently so since I haven't even gotten close to beating Trial 4 yet and I also haven't beaten the game on Hard mode even once.

If you want to take on hard mode, you got to Aegis. You will lose Srobeo, but you can look for it again after doing all aegis. Honestly, you should have done that a long time ago.
