So there are two main reasons why this didn't work. First off, the game specific renders in islands debris and etc in a certain radius from the true center of your raft. IE, the first board you're on when you start out. This is why people have also had islands disappear from underneath them suddenly: Their rafts weren't tethered and floated out of render distance for the island. The other thing is, the world doesn't actually loop around. From what people have found, the world is flat but when you reach the 'end', it teleports you back to the beginning of the world map. So it will never come back around on itself as you're just being teleported. This also is probably why it has such a hard time dealing with rafts that are longer, which is why it's recommended to not build out too far for performance reasons, and instead build up. I hope this helps!
@heavenssalvation95142 жыл бұрын
Your first reasoning is the most likely thing thats happening the second one doesnt make sense because if your raft is teleporting back then theres no reason for the island to disappear

@@heavenssalvation9514 no, what happens is because of the game rendering around the Center of the raft the islands become de-rendered and disappears under you if your raft floats away (as OP said), not because it's teleporting. It's not even an idea it's a proven part of the game because it also serves the purpose of forcing the player to keep moving and to stay on the raft and this is something anyone can try. Secondly, unless OP knows something I don't, I don't think the raft ever teleports. That would be normally pretty noticeable to any average player. A better solution would either be to keep the "raft" Centered and fixed but really the landscape (or oceanscape?) is moving. This may be also unlikely because if you let the raft drift you obviously don't see the oceanscape move but it would be easier to mask in general. Lastly, I think might be the most likely option is that the way it renders islands could also be the same way it spawns or deletes POI/islands. This would make sense because when the raft is stationary in the water it doesn't actually make any debris drift. And because the code spawns the debris and keeps it still, that code could possibly be reused for the islands. -Not a game designer, most of this is speculation with educated guesses from what I have played and seen in the game as well as minimal game design.

@@aquific In the world of programming it's actually not curvature you have to model to pull off the trick. In fact it's a hardware bug, or feature depending on how you look at it. In the 1979 game Asteroids all objects wrap from one end of the map to the other. Generally best known as a integer overflow ( due to int being the most common data type these days ) Take for example a byte with a range of 0-255, If you tell it to add a velocity of +1 to a position of 255 you end up back to 0. To prevent this behavior, you either have to choose a bigger data type so that you never reach the end, or you explicitly check for integer overflow and prevent it from happening.
@aquific2 жыл бұрын
@@MINIMAN10000 well in MODERN day technology, we go to much higher integers, especially in a game like raft because the world is so vast, the data would not be stored how you suggest, location data is often stored in a 128 bit (guess) data file, but when it starts to reach its boundaries, it would increase the size, and before you say things against that, that was a problem in 1979, most game engines from 2000s and onwards started adding systems to prevent that, it wouldnt make sense that a game, so vast and based on exploration wouldnt use this? it would one of the first things you would consider.
@anthonyward88532 жыл бұрын
Correct, when you get a certain distance from an island it despawns. Story islands are programed to respawn instantly, but do so under normal island spawning rules. This means that even the story islands that initially spawn behind you, forcing you to use an engine to reach them, will respawn ahead of you. This entire game can be completed without using an engine and paddles used only for maneuvering around islands. Also, you're raft never moves, it's the world that moves around it. The four foundations you start with is essentially the center of the universe, everything revolves around that point.

@@ItIsHendi Because no game goes in a sphere. Every single video game you play is a flat plane. There is no map for Raft. It is randomly generated and the world only exists within so many meters of your raft. That "sailing around the world" was obvious bullshit. What happens tech wise is that the island spawns in when the coordinates are entered. When you cross a certain distance away from the island it will instead spawn somewhere close. This is why you can't leave it, sail in a straight line, and run into it again. Think about it like this. If the world actually existed, wouldn't you run into the story islands out of order by accident at times? That doesn't happen. Erm, I'm pretty sure that the raft defines the game. The raft is 0,0 coordinates, and the rest of the stuff just drifts by. When you anchor, you don't anchor the raft, you anchor the WORLD. And it spawns stuff randomly. When you input a coordinate, it spawns that specific island somewhere and tells you where. Normal islands just spawn in randomly. When you rotate the steering wheel, you rotate the world.

I highly doubt that this is technically accurate, as to how its implemented; The game would be unplayable, even if you weren't DF. Plus: The player can jump off the raft; Calculating every single thing outside of the raft for movement would drop the framerate to unplayable; Islands wrap around, and have a vector for relative coordinates, though they remain unloaded; Z-fighting and other floating-point-error-related graphics distortions occur at large distances, which shows that those distances are actually being travelled, and it would be a massive waste of time to program it differently... In other words, this is wrong. No sane development company would do this, with a game such as this, if they wanted to be remotely successful

@@corruptconverter2616 It's not that crazy, actually. We do know that having the boat too far away from your position can cause the islands you are standing on to disappear, so it seems the map is loaded around the raft and not around the player. Anyway, from a development perspective, they could be doing some aggressive culling around the world's points of interest by calculating the distance between the raft's center and the origin point of the islands, and then load/unload them based on that. For maximum optimization, the position of the world in the raft could be represented as a transformation matrix that gets applied to all non-raft objects, which is something that is already done constantly when rendering.
@corruptconverter26162 жыл бұрын
@@neirenoir Island unloading is simple: If it's over 400 units away from the raft, then you unload it. That doesn't mean that they move around the raft, but it does mean that they don't impact performance if you're not close to them.

at a glance, and judging by the previous video, it looks as though raft "movement" actually consists of moving the world's various assets. We can see this when the speed increases to the raft cause birds flying overhead to animate much faster in accordance with its speed. By moving everything in the ocean faster, the illusion of a "fast raft" is created. This theory would explain the inability to circle the globe as well. If movement is emulated by moving landmarks and flotsam in relation to the raft, it would make sense for globe circling to be a matter of teleporting islands to their new position. Unfortunately this means that the world of raft would not be a globe, but a flat plane with the occasional teleporting island. Of course, this is all just a guess.

if you look closely at this part 11:43 you can see that it looks like the world is shaking slightly. This effect can be seen again but a lot more dramatically at 0:55. This is caused by the coordinates that the game uses (which are numbers) start to lose precision because they get too big. The game most likely uses X, Y, Z coordinates for every direction (east/west, north/south, and up/down) if we focus on the X coordinate if you stand close to the center of the map the coordinate would be like 1.103249827. (not exactly 1 but also there would be a lot more decimal points I am just using 10 numbers for the example) once you move east/west far enough the would number of the coordinate would become two-digits which then causes there to be also 9 decimal places instead of 9, this doesn't really cause any visible effects so far but if you way farther out (to a point where you have a 10 digit number) you start to see that "shaking" effect because the game can't physically render anything between 2 whole numbers so it ends up shaking... sorry if this isn't explained better watch a video on someone who knows how computers work better.

The islands despawn when they move too far away from the raft's centre point (the four foundation pieces you spawn on), marking the origin of the game world. Story islands are immediately respawned so the player can progress, all other objects continue to spawn randomly ahead of the raft. The raft itself is the only thing that doesn't move. All other objects move around it, and the world itself is only defined by two infinite and parallel planes marking the water's surface and the sea floor.

You know you probably could have just tracked the number of planks to figure out distance. If I had to guess each foundation is 1m sort of like a Minecraft block. Divide the number of planks by 2 and you know how many foundation you've built and roughly the distance.

I feel like this might be a case of wormd generating according to the position of the raft's "center"
@MGSLurmey2 жыл бұрын
It's even better than that. The raft's center *is* the center of the world. Those four planks you spawn on are the origin point for the entire world, so everything else moves around the raft.
@rjgraylight Жыл бұрын
Just to inform, to save on resources, beyond a certain distance from the raft, nothing spawns anymore. So even if you did manage to circumnavigate the world of Raft while on a raft, accomplished via loop spawning mechanics, you can't build. I think the limit is something like 3k meters from the raft itself before everything stops spawning. I've personally had my raft leave me stranded on an island, multiplayer shenanigans, and the entire island despawned completely once the raft got far enough away. The shark, Bruce (canon name believe it or not), doesn't even spawn once you're about half the island spawning distance away from your raft.

I believe you can't build a raft around the world because the looping world is an illusion. The raft just gets teleported to the other side of the map. (or rather, the map gets teleported to the other side of the raft... since I'm pretty sure they set the raft as the world origin as evidenced by how you only saw those visual floating point errors cropping up when you fell off the raft in the last video)
@TimelordSnowy2 жыл бұрын
I think your right because his character was jittering like how minecraft starts to jitter when you get to far from 0,0. Im also pretty sure I had a discussion with one of my teachers a few months ago on the subject of world origins in games and that the furhter you go the more wierd things that happen (jittery character/camera, in minecraft the grid doesnt line up with the blocks, etc)
@PureAsbestos2 жыл бұрын
@@TimelordSnowy yep. the only truly unusual thing in this case is that they center around the raft and not the player. re-centering around the player is a common way of getting around this limitation
@MrBthomp2 жыл бұрын
It could be, your raft isn't actually moving and Islands and other material are being spawned in randomly and given a direction to simulate your movement. So the reason you can't find the same island is because that Island hasn't despawned
@cringelord75252 жыл бұрын
What if you didn't build on the water but above it since it seems like the game can handle that better.

The game world extends infinitely and is centered on the raft, so yes and no. You can just keep building, until your computer explodes that is.

Lmao Edit-> okay yeah so I lost this one. Your tactics were good.. I really enjoyed your work with this video N8. Making sense of how every game comes back and relates to profits. My prediction. You’re going to build and get around the world back to where you started. But you’re not going to find to find your boat because while the world might loop around, the raft doesn’t.
@lancepatchwork22632 жыл бұрын

@MGSLurmey2 жыл бұрын
Just to share some info, the game world doesn't actually loop around. Objects such as islands are just deleted when they move too far from the center of the raft (which is the origin point for the whole game world) and story islands specifically are immediately respawned ahead of the raft so the player can always progress, whereas other less important objects like random islands, garbage, and abandoned rafts are spawned in the same way but on a random basis.
@Inyourface34452 жыл бұрын
I would have to reverse engineer the game a lot to figure out how this works, but I will give it a try. So what happened last time is that you traveled so far out that the game teleported the islands to reciter around your raft, rather then dynamically generating them all of the way out. It would make the most sense if all of the islands are considered a single object, for easier programming. The reason you aren’t seeing your raft again is because the world is “infinite”, but the islands are not. In other words, the world dose not have a border, but the islands do. The reason that the islands don’t center to where you are on the raft is because it likely calculates the center of the raft from the scathe position of all of the tiles touching the water. This was typed on a phone, so don’t judge me.

If you build a longish raft, then break out part of it, the 2 remaining sections still count as 1 raft and will both move at the same speed and change direction together as though they were still joined, that would also be a way to reduce lag. Only thing is, I don't know if it would still work beyond render distance.
