My grandpa was a mechanic at a Ford dealership during the 50’s, 60s and 70’s. Worked on these old fords every day. He could redo the hydraulics on one in no time. Would love to know how many thousands he did. It was my job as a kid to hand him wrenches. Back then at 7 or 8 yrs old I could have probably done one myself. Love the video. I bought parts from you last yr and fixed the hydraulics on my 1959 Ford 671. Your clear video was much better than reading my Ford Service Manual 15 times. 3pth/lift was working great, until Sunday when I tried to lift a heavy log w a chain attached to my 8' grader blade. Overload! a loud clank noise - I thought chain snapped. No. Something in hydraulics - no more lift action. I parked it. Love your videos. It’s a great thing you’re doing helping people keep these old tractors alive. A video on replacing or repairing the two tubes that run through the transmission would be stellar. Apparently, it’s a very common problem. And offering new ones ready to install would be even better!

This is a wonderful presentation. This helped me get the confidence to tackle the job. At age 81 it gets a little tougher. There are however a few things that should be mentioned. In my case all went well until time to replace the pin. It would not come out and I had to take it to a welder / friend to heat it to get the pin out. Before he could do his job I needed to remove most of the linkages out so nothing would get damaged by the heat. The new pin was slightly bigger and would not go in so I needed to use a drill just slightly larger to ensure a proper fit. I also ordered Loctite to make a permanent bond. Putting everything back was good since I had the video for every step of the way. Not everything goes perfect every time but having a great presentation is very helpful. They also had the proper pin and gaskets. Thank you, Hank

Great video, helped me get my failing 3-point lift back up and working smoothly. Used video to replace piston and piston O-rings, safety valve, hydraulic cylinder O-rings, and lid gasket. Used the Ford 600 manual and other resources to replace unloader valve O-ring (this was really failing on the lid), set loading-valve gaps (0.390 for draft control and 0.450 for implement control, see manual). Once all this was done the 3-point was raising and lowering as designed and holding, where before the work sometimes it wouldn't lift at all and when it did lift it wouldn't hold and would drift down requiring constant readjustment. Rachel I have an NAA, but I watched this just because of some similar components. I would recommend using Kopper Coat anti seize. It makes a second disassembly much easier. Thank you about the pivot pin hint. I enjoyed and learned a lot about the project before I start on it. Grandpa bought the NAA brand new. 4 farmers in our neighborhood bought NAA’s. 3 were equipped with a Deerborn loaders with engine driven front pumps. We removed our loader. My cousin still has her loader on, but her 3 point will not lift. I need to check it out for her. Thank you so much for the video. Rachel I saw a neat video about the oil leak, it is called NAA Hydraulic Oil Leak by Random Stuff. You can see the hydraulic oil pouring out from the piston o-ring. On the NAA if you remove the huge hydraulic fill plug, you can see if the piston seals are leaking, I think that you can see how worn the pivot pin is through the fill plug. I do not know if the number series is built the same way. Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border.

Your kit was great with all the right orings and pieces needed. I think a good addendum to this video, would be how to take the main shaft out as to take the arm that holds the pin out for drilling the pin out. What at terrible time I had getting that thing out... Heating, beating and finally took the whole shaft out to remove that arm and drill the pin out! I was afraid of bending the arm or the shaft. But, you are awesome in all you do for the community of DIY'ers. Thank you again!

My dad and I just repaired my 800's hydraulics using Rachel's parts and this video. Went smoothly and now my hydraulics work like new again! The toughest part was getting the pin out and putting the new hardened one (one of her grandpa's creations) back in. A little heat and in it went. Thanks again Rachel!

@@308dad8 hi, I will have to go back and see which part you're referring to. Yes we did this repair but I don't recall disconnecting any hydraulic lines. All of my repairs were under the top lid with the piston and lift mechanism.

I bought an 861 a couple months ago and had issues keeping my implements where I wanted them. drive a while and they drop to the ground. I watched this video and bought a couple pins and a gasket kit and pulled it apart (not a one man job but I did get it off and back on by myself). I love these Rachel videos. My pin was so bad that there was less than 1/16th of an inch left. A couple of things to mention. 1) make sure all the cylinders are all the way down (I shot fluid everywhere) 2) The pin will drive out , its just stuck pretty good. 3) Get help lifting on and off.

I’ve had the O ring on the lid blow out & leak internally. One is pressure, one is return. On my 900, you can remove the left side cover where the dipstick is & look for leaks more easily. Drive the left wheel up on a block of wood to tilt the tractor & keep the oil from running out.

Rachael, About the hardened pivot pins: the original pin was not hardened because it was a sacrificial metal. Any time you have 2 metals wearing together, one is designed to be the softer metal and take the most wear. Usually this soft part is the one that is easiest to replace. If the pin you removed was hardened, the yoke it goes through would have worn the hole large and/or oval. I think given the choice you would rather replace the pin than the other parts. When you rebuilt this engine you saw that your bearings were worn. You didn’t replace those with hardened bearings. That would have been a Bad Idea. I suggest you don’t change the original designers’ intent. Offer original soft pins. Great instructional videos. Keep ‘em comin’!

Do you know the correct length and diameter of the pins? Could get a machinist to make you some from mild steel. Also had that thought about hardened steel pin might wear the cam surface it rides against maybe causing more extensive damage than a pin that took 60 years to wear out in the first place.

Just a heads up, the pivot pin can be a NIGHTMARE to remove. For instance, my pivot pin couldn't be removed with a hammer and punch or even using a steering wheel remover type clamp. (Even with heat.) It's a hardened steel pin so you can't use a regular drill bit on it. I ended up using a carbide glass cutting drill bit to carefully drill out the pin. Even with the pin removed, it was not possible to get the new pin in. I tried using a benchtop vise to press it in but it was just way too tight. (I again tried heat and freezing the pin to no avail.) I ended up having to take a round tube file to very carefully and slowly file out the inside of where the pivot pin would go. I eventually was able to just barely press in the pin so I know it's not going to slide out one day. (If you file too much you're pretty much out of luck.) Again, this was an absolute nightmare and turned what I thought would be a one day repair into a 4 day ordeal. All this to say: Prepare yourselves for the worst case!

Rachel, This is a great video, but you make it look to easy. I have tried everything and cannot get the pivot pin out. The Hydraulic Control Lift I had to cut it off because I broke it off piece by piece and it would not budge. I am afraid to go any further. I have a ford 641. I had hydraulic oil leaking out the vent hole on a square plate below the transmission underneath during usage until the lift quits. Purchased a lift repair kit and replaced all the o-rings and relief valve on the lift unit, including the piston ring. (piston and cylinder were perfect). Still leaking out that hole. Leaves a trail of oil. Please give me your best guess. Thank you for your help and all your videos.

i watched your video to replace my clutch on ford 8n tractor. Finally got the nerves to split it apart. I purchased the parts and guide tool from yall. replaced it all, adjusted clutch but, seems like throw out bearing is not reaching clutch to disengage. pulled apart 3 more times to make sure nothing is in backwards or if any part is broke on parts pushing on clutch. sounds like its barely touching clutch but not enough. any clue what to check or try. Love the videos on how to make repairs on my 8n.

only thing I saw that could be improved is when your cleaning off the old gasket. out a clean rag into the case to catch any debris from the gasket and then remove the rag before re assembly.
