As always, a great video!!! While you deservedly receive many compliments on your natural wholesome beauty, you are first and foremost a very talented instructor and mechanic that remains mindful of the trepidation many have to diving into repairs. I had to sort this repair out on my own with my Cub, which had been parked years before. Since I had never opened up a magneto before, I only had a vague idea of what was inside, much less how/why it functions as it does. This tutorial surely would have saved me hours on the repair, as I’m sure it will do for others when facing a similar. I recently inherited 3 Ford series 600 tractors that have sat for years and apparently vandalized. As such I’m scouring your back catalogues of videos on Fords of that era trying to soak it all up before I have a floor full of parts that I’m only 50/50 on whether I can reassemble. Thank you for all you past, present and future assistance on keeping the old tractors in repair and functional.

Great tutorial. I never go that far into them, because it is not usually necessary. I know why you did was to teach how to do it if need be. One thing you may not be aware of, The W-9s and diesel tractors use the H4 magneto but they have a left hand impulse. The impulse is the opposite on them. That's why the hydraulic pump on the gas 400 and 450 have the opposite ports to their diesel counterparts, because the gas tractors and diesels rotate in opposite directions.

In order to get the impulse off, you MAY, need to hold the shaft from the SMALL END, with your adjustable wrench, or it will just turn and turn while you try and loosen the nut.

When checking the switch for continuity, be aware that some meters beep with any reading below 50 ohms and other meters below 100 ohms. You should also look at the meter and verify you are reading below 1 ohm. Your probes and the connection to the switch may add 1 maybe 2 ohms. The beep just tells you there is"some" current flow..
@plcreman4 жыл бұрын
@Todd Orton Yes that or just read the resistance on the ohm meter.. We change and throw away plenty of relays that have contacts of 2 or 3 ohms because they won't start a motor or because of the contact resistance they heat up and start melting the case. With a switch you may be able to shoot some contact cleaner in there and get it to work for a bit.. (if you can get the solvent into the switch).

Great job! You are really easy to understand. Question: I just converted my old TD9 International dozer from a coil based spark to a magneto. Very easy change over. You might know that these start on gas and then run on diesel all on the same engine. Is there a problem with not using the ground kill wire on the magneto? I mean, it switched over to the injector pump and when I kill the motor I just shut down the injector pump. So is there any harm in letting the magneto spark all the time even though I am not running on gas?

Good job. Make some videos working on some orange or green tractors. Hydraulic pump on WD45 would be a good one.

I always hated trying to shut off our H Farmall if it was a little wet out. I would go to push the kill switch in and get a good shock. We replaced our mags with Delco Remy distributors. We weren't purists.

If the switch is worn, it can tickle you. when you shut the tractor off. Delco Remy distributors were optional. I am fine with either. If you had a good switch, you wouldn't get tickled.
