Fan theory yes or no. There's been speculation that bowser isn't the bad guy at all so here's my idea. The mario games are essentially a dream sequence/delusion where a desperate and heartbroken plumber chases the love of his life, a woman of much higher status, after she decides to be with another man, who our lonely plumber sees as a threat, hence the "monster" appearance bowser wears. Mario imagines the princess calling out to rescue her from an unhappy relationship/marriage (odyssey was the wedding so there's that) but bowser is like hey no she's with me back off, and he's turned bowser jr (who it was confirmed peach is his mama) against mario too. The relationship and the males antagonize mario who's desperate for love, positive that peach feels the same only because of the friendly attention she pays him when they're together, i.e. giving him cake, hugs, the occasional forehead kiss. in his mind he's rescuing his princess from a monster when reality is he's heartbroken that she would choose someone else There's also only a limited selection of enemies with a LOT of repeats, it could even be possible those are his loved ones trying to dissuade his obsession with peach but he just sees them as the "monster's" minions trying to get in his way so he pays no mind or even hurts them because he needs to "rescue his princess"
