There is no Touhou only convention within the US as that is when such contests are held. Also staying in the top 10 out of 140 since 2002 with only 2 game appearances, 3 print work appearances, 2 references, and 1 cameo appearance in a print work is quite a feat.

The problem is that fandom has indeed made Flandre as a monster, because deep down inside we like the idea of Flan being completely insane due to a tragic lockup. And since ZUN hasn't said enough of what is really true, it can really be both ways. The only thing we have are dialogue and guide snippets, which make it difficult for fans to decide, however a large group (including me) has decided Flandre is locked up by her sister and that she's crazy.

I like that in canon, she's shown to be able to reason and follow a plan, plus having incredible control over her power. It's not wrong to follow other interpretations though, that's what makes Touhou great!

I've always got the impression that Flandre cannot recognize (and cannot reconcile) the difference between her innocent childlike desire to love and be loved by people with her vampiric desire to love to eat people for their flesh and blood. And that this is what causes her to act so unstable at times that it becomes necessary for her to be locked up; and that knowing people like Marisa who can "play" with Flandre and survive are important to Remilia and Flandre.
