Is the secret rapture of the church a true biblical teaching? In this sermon, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones focuses on Daniel 9 as a passage frequently used in the discussion of the end-times, yet the language it employs is often mysterious and open to debate over its meaning. At the center of the debates are verses 24-27 which refer to various weeks that the events will fall on. Some interpret these events as still awaiting fulfillment, but Dr. Lloyd-Jones makes his case for why he believes the events to have been fulfilled with the life of Jesus Christ, the destruction of the temple, and defeat of the Jewish people in 70 A.D. Sermon Breakdown
The sermon continues a series on the second coming of Christ and prophecy. Dr. Lloyd-Jones aims to consider different views on prophecy to expand horizons.
Daniel 9:24-27 is discussed. There are three main views: 1) It's history, not prophecy, 2) There is a gap between the 69th and 70th week, and the 70th week is in the future. 3) It was fulfilled in 70 AD. Dr. Lloyd-Jones argues for the third view.
Verse 24 refers to finishing transgression, ending sin, reconciling iniquity, bringing righteousness, sealing prophecy, and anointing the holy. Dr. Lloyd-Jones says this happened through Jesus.
Verse 25 presents no difficulty. Verse 26 refers to the Messiah being cut off after 69 weeks. This happened with Jesus's death.
Verse 27: "He" refers to the Messiah, not the prince. The Messiah confirmed the covenant for one week, then caused sacrifice to cease by his death. The abominations and desolation refer to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD.
The "gap theory" is inconsistent in how it treats the divisions of 7 and 62 weeks versus 69 and 70 weeks. The 70 weeks follow sequentially after the 69 weeks.
Another view discussed is the "preliminary rapture" - that Jesus will come secretly to rapture believers before the tribulation. This view started in 1830.
The preliminary rapture view says Jesus's coming and appearing are different. His coming is only for the church, in secret. His appearing is with the church, to defeat the Antichrist.
The origin of the preliminary rapture view is traced to prophetic utterances in Edward Irving's church, as stated by scholar Tregellis. Teachings from supposed revelations should be viewed with suspicion.
Not all early Brethren leaders accepted the preliminary rapture view, e.g. B.W. Newton, George Muller.
1 Thessalonians 4-5, 2 Thessalonians 1-2, and 1 Corinthians 15 are suggested as passages to consider regarding the preliminary rapture view.
Dr. Lloyd-Jones urges careful, prayerful consideration of these matters with guidance from the Holy Spirit.

("Behold your house has been left unto you desolate.") {Daniel 9:27} 7 weeks + 62 weeks + *one week* = 70 weeks, to anoint the most Holy, and to seal up the vision and the prophecy. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, *It was necessary* that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: (for there were three and a half years remaining grace for "thy people" of the final week.) but seeing ye put it from you, and *judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life* lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. {Acts 13:46-48} To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until *the land had enjoyed her sabbaths* for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years. {2 Chronicles 36:21} For 490 years, equal to 70 sabbath rest for the land every seventh year, that Israel and Judah transgressed the law of God. This is why they received seventy years exiled in bondage in the land of Babylon. There was no gap in their seventy years in exil, and there is no gap in the 490 years of transgressing the law of God, and there most certainly was no gap unto the coming of the Messiah who did not come in a vacuum, but rather confirmed his covenant with many for there and a half years, and in the land of Israel's inheritance. The stoning of Steven is when probation closed on the covenant that God made with the their fathers, exactly three and a half years after Jesus Christ, our passover was sacrificed for us, and the gospel of the kingdom of heaven went out unto the Gentiles also.

I speak in tongues and was raised to believe in a pre tribulation rapture of the true church . After learning 2 Thessalonians 2:2 I still believe in the the rapture of the redeemed,both dead and living. But after we know who the Antichrist is . Darby and Scofield were not men of integrity or Christian character. I feel the doc trine they all presented was so popular because it tickled the ears of the people who wanted and those who still want a way of escaping persecution, hardship and death at the end of days when we must possibly stand for Christ or cower in shame for His Name's sake

God bless you. There is not one shred of biblical evidence to either support a pre tribulation rapture OR a future antichrist. Margaret Macdonald was responsible for the pre tribulation rapture given via a false prophecy in 1830. This was made popular by Samuel Irwin , John Nelson Darby and CS Schofield. The future antichrist originates from a incorrect understanding of Daniels prophecy in Daniel c9. The spirit of antichrist has been with us since the days of the Roman Emperors. The emperors were pictures of antichrist and when the Roman Empire fell and the emperors died off, the Roman Catholic Church came to the fore and the papacy took over from the emperors. Need I say more!

While we may disagree at some points, I totally agree with you in the tickling desire that the body of Christ won’t be called to endure the final tribulation. Church history makes this reality and teaching of Scripture abundantly clear that Christians are called to suffer in this world for their identification and union in Christ. If the Church endured mass martyrdom then, why should we, or any subsequent generation, expect to circumvent or dodge any trib? Martyrdom, severe persecution is happening as we speak in the world, so it can almost be an ignorance afforded by the comforts of the western world to think we, in the comforts of a still rather benevolent government, can meet, evangelize, and all the religious freedom that others don’t have, think we don’t have to suffer for the name of Christ in the tribulation?

So let me get this straight, Martyn was basically a preterist and didn't do any research to find that the rapture pretrib eschatology was taught as far back as 100 AD in the epistle of Barnabas. Gotcha. Martyn was a smart man and a good teacher in many ways, but like many, including many in the church today, his eschatology was wrong and it seems he didn't even bother to do any research for his assertions in this sermon.

Notice that Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones simply quoted Samuel Prideaux Tregelles who identified the doctrine's unscriptural origins? But it was Darby who popularized it and have been recognized by the Christian church as its founder and teacher. I encourage you to ask theologians about this. Thank you.

Amen! When God says 70 weeks He means 70 weeks! Not 70 weeks plus 2024+ years plus some "7-year great tribulation" plus some carnal 1000-year "millennial kingdom". It is blasphemous to insert a "gap" to override God's DETERMINED 70-week prophecy that was fulfilled and sealed with the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem in AD70 as God DETERMINED.

There is no evidence in scripture that the gifts of the Holy Spirit ended during Acts. The gifts were given by God for the building up and edification of the Body of Christ. All things are to be done decently and in order. If ever the Body of Christ needed building up,it’s now, but it has always needed building up. Pastors, evangelists, teachers etc have also always been needed. No biblical evidence that these ministries died out either. Tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, discernment of spirits, gifts of healing and the gift of faith are perfectly biblical and right for today. If Dr Jones did not believe this, then he was wrong!

@@gonehome2 Whatever version you use, verse 27 presents the details of verse 24, which lays down the context to properly understand this passage, which is the fate of the Jews and the Messiah's role in their deliverance. History attests to the fulfillment of this prophecy (Christ's finished work and Jerusalem's fall in AD 70 as Christ prophesied in Matthew 24), testifying to the reliability of God's Holy Word.

@@AgeDeo2009 I have been a born again bible believer for over 40 years and prophecy is the gift God blessed me with according to Romans. The main reason Christians cannot contend with one another today is due to sooo many modern day bibles. With all my heart and conviction, if one isn't determining their doctrines from the King James Authorized Version only, they will fall into error. So, he's a preterist. Interesting, and he's very well spoken. GREAT accent! However, the preterist view is..., rather lacking in many respects. Nevertheless, it's not really something to kick about. I guess we'll just have to explain it to the preterists on the way up. The real thing about this view is that it's not really taking all of prophecy into consideration. Consider Psalm 83, and Ezekiel 38 - 39. If Damascus soon becomes a large pile of glowing rubbish, then you might want to reconsider your hermeneutics and eschatology. Unfortunately, they (strangely enough) are not covering the events in Israel and the surrounding countries as much as you would think. But I don't think that we have much longer to wait until Israel gets a lot larger and the countries around them get smaller, or go away. Yeah, it also looks like Israel is going to take a serious hit as well, but I suspect that it will also result in a lot of new Jewish immigrants coming back to their own land. But as with all yet to be fulfilled prophecy, we'll just have to wait and see; that is, if we are still hanging around these parts. Maranatha! 🙏✝️👑✝️🙏

Mathew 24:29-31 after the tribulation the elect gathered Romans 11:7 and 1 Peter 1:1-2 defines the elect as everyone that has faith in Yeshua. Scripture tells us that God is the One who makes covenants with man, with Noah, Moses, Abraham, and David. In the New Testament, He does it through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus has also ended all sacrifices by offering Himself once and for all. The Epistle to the Hebrews gives a detailed account of this. Christ has completed everything the law requires, rendering it null and void.
