Do German audience understand the words he's singing, or do they just groove to the beat? I love Reinhard Mey, and most of the words he sings I cannot understand (just started learning German), but I love listening to him anyway because the music needs no translation.

Hi Lucille, What great question! I'm 62 yrs old. Listening to RnB, Rap, HipHop, old School since I'm 16. Still do though😉 Germans learn the english language (brit english) in school from 3rd grade (dont know what it is in US or GB). About 8yrs old. In highschool they can go to foreign countries for 1 yr as an exchange student. 18-24 yrs old. Most speak fluently english afterwards. Almost without an accent. But speaking english in Germany the opportunities become rare as you get older unless you use in your job. When I was young most young people didnt really get the lyrics, just danced and enjoyed the beats. When I sometimes told them what the meanings are....surprise, surprise🤣 plus some idioms wont show in a dictionary.😉 Back to ur question. Ya, I would assume a lot understand. We are surrounded by english music lyrics, english terms in advertises, public areas. Can't escape🤣🤣 I enjoy the english language because sometimes it is easier to relax with english lyrics when I just stop translating in my head 😉 Wonderful you learn german though👍. Hard to learn and to pronounce sometimes. Germany has to offer great singers keep singing in german.

@@ingla4755 Ja! Please do not stop singing in German or in French or in Spanish or in Swahili. One of the greatest...and most important...failures in America is that we don't understand the significance of learning other languages, and understanding and appreciating other cultures. Thus, we are woefully resigned to being monolingo and myopic! And the sad part of it all is that we don't even speak or write our so-called mothertongue very well! LOL! But there are some Americans like me who understand that the world exists beyond our shores. So continue to do your "thing" while we try to catch up...and join the other nations of the world. Danke, Vielen Dank, Merci, Gracias, Asante....and thank you!!!!

@@DiggerWhoops well Lucille, believe me our young generation is the same. Cant speak of all though. German gramma seems to become a "wheel of fortune". Either you luckily got right or not🤣 My english is not perfect at all but I still keep learning by paying attention to english speaking folks. I wish you a good, healthy life. Take care.
