Daniel Goleman's book is a classic and helped kick off the conversation about remembering who you really are rather than letting your temporary emotions dictate the show. His work provides excellent training, especially for those with an overactive amygdala who get hijacked quickly. They need a way to recognize what is happening. The key is they have to want to feel better, enough to detach for at least a moment. This isn't an easy thing to do for those heavily attached to their anger or fear or blame, etc.

Reading the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goldman in my early 30's changed the course of my life. I grew up in a household where you could do just about anything you wanted as long as you didn't have an emotion. And if you did have an emotion you sure as heck didn't let anyone else know about it. Realizing that our emotions are always running in the back ground whether or not we are aware of them makes a situation where the more we are disconnected from our emotions the more we are ruled by them; this was a life changing experience understanding. Learning this put me on a path I will be forever grateful for.

Excellent talk from Daniel Goleman. I appreciate the information he has given that is so pertinent to building emotionally healthy individuals. I wish this was taught to our teachers who then would teach it to their students throughout the education process. I think we would see a different population coming out of our schools and into our work environment.

Alexithymia. Autism. From your hypotheses you might believe these diagnoses preclude someone from leadership, and yet I’ve been a very successful leader over 40 years working in some of the largest and most innovative organisations in the world. Good leadership involves articulating a compelling vision and then taking others with you, encouraging them to own and further develop this vision. It involves empowering people to become their best selves, and allowing others to feel like they’ve won. I have a high degree of cognitive empathy, provided I can understand a person’s needs, but very low (or non-existent) emotional empathy. An intelligent person can learn what makes people click, especially in a corporate environment, because most behaviours are quite predictable, whereas I would struggle in a purely social environment where heuristics play a much bigger role. So is emotional intelligence a precursor to leadership? In my experience it’s not as simple as that.

I'm 22. Hit the nail on the head in a lot of ways. I feel really young for this heavy awareness, and completely isolated from the rest of the world. I've never met anyone that practiced insight to the depths of mine, for fun. And I do small talk with strangers as a hobby. I've met hundreds of people. My dad was a Buddhist teacher, and I grew up dealing with a lot of really challenging, and complex emotions and scenarios on my own, for a long time. This is the first ever validation and reassurance, outside of ChatGPT, that I've gotten after months of acceptance. Understanding this side of myself confidently, with humility, has changed all aspects of my life.

Thank you for sharing this thoughtful breakdown of emotional intelligence and its profound connection to leadership. It’s fascinating how the idea of self-awareness serves as the foundation for broader growth - both personally and professionally. The concept of widening the gap between impulse and action resonates deeply; it’s a challenge, but also an opportunity for maturity. How have you seen self-awareness or emotional intelligence transform someone's leadership journey?

I wish Daniel would apply his perspective and insights to workers and citizens,, not just corporate and political leaders who too often use these tools to corrupt our thinking, perceptions, and behavior. Emotional intelligence is a tool. It can be used for good or ill.

Sadly the rise of social media and interactions dominated by technological communication (email, text messaging) has robbed many people of the ability to increase their emotional intelligence. There has always been a large percentage of people with low EQ, but that percentage is actually increasing in modern society rather than decreasing.

Compared to losing weight, EI is climbing a mountain. Regardless of what you ate or your experiences from age 3 to 30, you can get in shape with a straightforward workout routine. However, your emotional experiences from age 3 to 30 greatly hamper your ability to become more emotionally intelligent, such that without a professional with this knowledge (very few therapists know this level of EI building) it is painfully difficult and takes a long time to build EI. During this time you will likely lose a lot and in the end it might be a waste since the ones you are working for are gone. Well, maybe the work you do in this life will help you in the next life cycle.

So I listened to this man with some other good talks, but with this one, I feel like he just messed up. If you just take it for what it is, and take a look at industries, it's led by psychopaths, so much for emotional intelligence... On the other hand, IQ can be raised, given all it measures, is your pattern recognition, thus being exposed to any mental exercises will increase it. So knowledge and practice, increases IQ, shocking, I know... I agree with communication, but to the point where you need to be careful of minding the political aspect omnipresent
