Just bought this last week, soooo excited. Was dry firing to try to smooth out the trigger because it was so stiff and heard something fly out of the muzzle and bounce around. Lubed it up and went to the range to break it in, pull the trigger… and nothing. No primer strike… turns out the firing pin broke off the tip, I’ve got less than 100 rounds through this pistol. Very disappointing to say the least.
@HollyrockFarm5 ай бұрын
In this day and age, dry firing is a normal training tool. The manual says to use a snap cap to prevent damage to the firing pin. I think modern pistols should be capable of sustained dry firing without it causing an issue. When you file your warranty claim, I recommend asking them to check for the issues I have with my copy. It seems these issues are not isolated. At least the Daniel Defense H9 came with a printed manual. My Sig MCX Spear did not. I got referred to a website to download it.

@@HollyrockFarm They did, but to be fair in a gun as small as that was was probably going to have teething issues due to striker drag. This is a full-size handgun so that should be less of an issue not more.

So i was ready to buy this pistol because i love my Hudson H9 .. then i saw the rattlesnake video. So I emailed DANIEL DEFENSE AND let them know about this issue with the key holing. I let them know in some Hudson H9’s they had barrels that were out of spec and the bore was too large. All I got back was a short & sweet response saying thanks for your input. lol. You should measure your bore and see if their barrels are out of spec. And then do another video on this. I really want this gun to succeed but DANIEL DEFENSE NEEDS TO WORK THESE BUGS OUT. I would bet the reason you see no rifling marks is because the barrel the over bore. Also in the original Hudson the guide rod was fixed to the frame. Maybe there was a reason for that ????

I would say give them a chance. It's their first pistol and let's be honest every company had an issue when first developing a firearm. I'm a huge Beretta fan and I get flack for issues that Beretta had 50 plus years ago. But now they're making phenomenal products. Same thing with Glock. Glock had its issues until they fixed it. Sig...... Well we all know about Sig. One day they will fix that problem. CZ had issues until they fixed the problem. It's going to be okay, I would just keep the pistol and just know that in the future they will make better pistols and go beyond our expectations. An accessories I'm sure will be available to fix all of the problems.

I know Sig has had some issues. I bought an M18 without knowing about the issues they were having. Fortunately for me I have over 3500 rounds through it with no issues at all. Extremely accurate too. The only problem I’ve had was when I was teaching a small stature female to shoot it she limp wristed it and caused a stove pipe. After I corrected her on her grip it never happened again. She hit a 10 inch steel at 10 yards 32 out of 32 times. She wanted to buy one but I talked her into buying something more inexpensive that shot just as well.

I haven't been a Glock armorer since Gen4 was the thing. Does it do it with a single particular cartridge or all of them? My general answer would be that is weird and worth further investigation. Additional details could easily change my opinion. A little bit of resistance is not the same as the issue with the H9. It is very noticeable. I've got several Glocks (all .40 S&W), an M&P, CZs, and none of them have the issue like the H9.
@cclacrosse164 ай бұрын
@@HollyrockFarm interesting.. I just tested with 115gr FMJ and the same thing happens as the HST. Round stays locked in there between striker face and chamber unless you really jerk the slide back. @@cclacrosse16 If your Glock 19 is running great and you know you've got to give the slide some force for reliable ejection, there is not much of an issue. The issue I had with the H9 would have resulted in a hole in the house had I not been vigilant. I now know about it. It may not be something out of spec but is something certainly worth noting. Complacency kills. Fight complacency and make sure you Glock has an empty chamber before pressing the trigger for disassembly and you won't have a problem. I don't know about that DD pistol ,but the new gen Glocks hold the round tight as you rack it back. And it's totally normal. There is a groove where the rim of the bullet seats giving it extra stability along with extractor. Hope I explained that right.

I got the same message from the media guy I've emailed back and forth with about the referenced ammunition. I also believe it is more widespread than they want to make out. Jesus tells us to forgive. I can forgive Daniel Defense if this pistol turns out to be a paperweight. I however will not restore a relationship with them without my gun working 100% or a refund. I'd also require an explanation for a full restoration. I have a hard time accepting the claim most of the market place has been positive on their guns. We are seeing issues for a new pistol best I can tell not seen before. Key hole shots typically found in worn out barrels. Ejection issues mostly dirty gun jamming it up. DD H9 mid-aligning guide rod. Feed issues not totally uncommon usually magazine or feed ramp, ammo sometimes. James Reeves had several fire issues/feed issues if I recall before 500 rounds. This pistol is not ready for market, its bad press at launch. Now seeing the slipping guide rod lock up. Another issue likely to occur is the thin metal lock in piece will sheer off eventually. This part needs a total redesign. The barrel needs a complete redesign, something is not right in its tolerances. All of this for a price you can find at least 5 pistols in $750 or cheaper range with much better build quality and features. They run very well and one underrated $500 pistol is Ruger American 9mm. By the way this list is void of Glock offerings. Outside of Gen 5 changes the rest are outdated and over priced.

Damn, it really shouldn't matter if the guide rod moves 1/16" to one side or the other. I can't even count how many guns I've seen that have the guide rod slightly out of place when disassembled. The frame causes the guide rod to no longer engage with the barrel once the slide is installed on the gun... so when the slide is removed, it re-engages the barrel in a different spot (not perfect) and that's normal. Yeah, you might not be able to reinstall the slide with the guide rod off center, because it might snag on the frame (if it's too far off)... but when the gun is assembled, it cannot be too far off, because the inner walls of the frame won't let it.
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
The guide rod issue with the H9 is most likely meaningless. The point that gets me is Daniel Defense sending me the photo with the implication that I had not properly assembled the gun. I'm confident I had it assembled correctly and those photos were not of my gun. Then, my point became, how could they even tell how the guide rod was installed when it does not remain in the proper installation notch? I sent the gun back to Daniel Defense with the chamber flag installed...so the slide had to be free to move.
@Subtlenimbus4 ай бұрын
The way you set the recoil assembly on the barrel ledge shouldn’t be a problem. It’s usually on there just long enough to assemble the gun, and then it sits in the frame instead of the barrel. It appears that it is moving around inside the gun, which IS a problem. As to the keyholing, the fouling and lack of rifling cuts = oversized bore, which is the same exact problem the Hudson version had.
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
I don't disagree with any of that. Normal guide rods are circular. Their rotation is no big deal. The rotation on the H9 with that tab, that seems like it might be an issue. I also suspect an oversize bore. I'm not a gunsmith but it makes the most sense to me.

The only noticeable difference I see in the guide rod of the incorrect photo versus walking off the shelf that you're showing is the guide rod does look to be angled in a downwards manner on the incorrect photo, which is consistent towards them noting "incorrect". The walking off the shelf... well, that's honestly probably an entirely unique issue that they're not aware of perhaps due to the guide rod initially being out of whack based on the photos. I'd follow up with them on that. The "slow" ejection issue isn't really a problem unless it's hanging up whilst you're shooting, even with low pressure rounds. I can see where it could be a design ideal that utilizing the momentum of the recoil to push the empty casting into an "ejection notch", in which with enough momentum, will encourage the round of popping out more definitively, which we seen here from the dummy round explanation of giving it the gas. Check chamber for any issues of fouling or issues with the rifling grooves from the chamber inwards. There's something wrong if that projectile isn't spinning properly and giving those kinds of rubs, doesn't seem right in my book.

Wish I could see the ledge that you're referring to on camera. Hard to tell if it's on too deep, on the right ledge, or not on the ledge at all. I think with Glocks, they have a 2nd ledge that you're not supposed to use and the same with other semi-auto handguns. You can actually compress and seat the guide rod assembly too deep onto the barrel lug. It don't really ever cause a problem though as far as I know. Once you use the gun or rack it a few times and then take the slide off... it's just barely hanging on the ledge like what you show in the video here. Seems to be a common occurrence.

That is not the case with the Daniel H9. It should reliably fire everything and shoot straight without limitation. My first question is how do you put 500 rnds through a pistol and NOT notice the key hole issue?
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
Well, in today's market, I've never personally seen a pistol have accuracy issues. When I ran the burndown, I rushed to get rounds through the gun for reliability testing. I ran all 520 rounds as fast as I could with the limitation of only having three magazines. If you watch the burndown, you'll see my target had a big hole and some outliers. I never bothered to check for keyholding until I heard about it from a subscriber and went to check. I still have the burndown target. There is evidence of oblong "keyhole" shapes instead of nice round ones. I figured the outlier rounds were just me being me with the occasional bad trigger press. (It should be noted my gun had a gritty and heaver than spec trigger before I sent it back the first time.) The Daniel H9 is the first pistol in my 22 years of handling pistols that didn't shoot straight. Accuracy testing is now going to be part of my protocol.

All guiderods move around under recoil. They aren't supposed to stay in the exact spot you install them in for reassembly. Not saying yours isn't messed up, only that the guiderod is gonna move around and the channel is designed simply to hold it in position so the gun can be reassembled without the guiderod interfering. A glock guiderod will not be in the same place after either when you shoot it and then disassemble it, but typically not left or right, but up and down.
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
I’m not sure if I accurately showed it, but the H9 has a tab that sits in a grove on the barrel. It is more of an “I” shape than an “O” shape like most other guide rods. An “O” can rotate without too much trouble. Rotate an “I” shape less than 180 degrees and we have an issue.
@Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x284 ай бұрын
@HollyrockFarm I'm inclined to believe the guiderod is not an issue whatsoever, as it has limited functionality and it's doing exactly what it is designed to do. I think the person responsible for looking at your gun at DD is just an idiot. My glocks do the same thing. The guiderod is never in the assembly position when i disassemble them after shooting. Yours might possibly be moving more than is typical, but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything operationally so I'd like to see an H9 that doesn't do this as a comparison. Seems the spring weight might be underpowered, and the hood of the slide around the front of the ejection port "locking" area might be too far back to eject a loaded cartridge correctly. Seems there is definitely some issues, but I don't think the guiderod moving is the root cause. I could be wrong, but just my opinion from what I see through video.
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
@@Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x28 I'm not sure if the guy that checked my gun at Daniel Defense was an idiot...it is possible. When I get my gun back from Daniel Defense I'm going to do a part 4. Hopefully I can give it my endorsement rather than further condemnation. I'll certainly explore the guide rod positioning. The spring weight may be underpowered. When I did my 520 round burndown video, the brass was ejecting like it was an AK...the brass almost needed its own backstop. That is obviously an exaggeration but it was noticeable.
@Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x284 ай бұрын
@HollyrockFarm well if that's the case, I'd say the spring weight is probably ok, and the main issue is a dimensional tolerance problem with the slide and/or barrel. I think the guiderod is a non issue, until I see evidence otherwise. I've seen guiderods literally broken in half and the gun still functions fine and it was only discovered the guiderod was broken when disassembling to clean the gun.
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
@@Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x28 Fair on the guide rod...the 1911 is a prime example of one not necessarily being required. It stands to reason if the bore is not correct then the notch for the guide rod tab on the barrel might just as easily be a couple thousandths too shallow allowing the rotation. The rotation may not be a factor for reliable operation…but it was a factor for their technician!
@chrissinclair44424 ай бұрын
As far as the keyholing, I would bet DD wasn't happy with the recoil reduction and has over bored the cal to make it less recoil. Only my speculation but I never understood the fad of reducing performance with a barrel instead of powder.
@HollyrockFarm4 ай бұрын
Interesting concept. I’ve heard of porting the barrels after short lengths to reduce velocity but never making the bore oversize intentionally to reduce recoil.
@chrissinclair44424 ай бұрын
@@HollyrockFarm it was a fad back in the 80s and 90s. Shot guns did over boring as well as lengthened forcing cones, but then I started hearing about pistols. I don't know if people started doing because they heard it in something like movies/TV and producers thought you could do it with pistols or what. I just thought it was stupid, think even a Punisher movie mentioned it in the early aughts. In a shotgun it can improve a pattern and I guess help with recoil. If over boring helps with recoil though it affects performance I'm sure.

@@HollyrockFarm it should feed and like a normal pistol should. The bbl issue is just so lame eveb hi points dont key hole but the guide rod problem is just bad design slash toerance issue see iif DD will take it back and give you a credit for one of their rifles. Just so you know DD majes the bbls for HK rifles sold in the US so they def know bbl qc stds. But this pistol could be using a subcontractor made bbl we dont know.

@@jim99west46 I brought up the lack of the keyhole feature with Hi-Points when I filled out my warranty claim online! I also sent them a link to this video. I just hope they can make it right. I hope Daniel Defense gets it all squared away and DD and the gun have a long track record of success with this just being a bump. I asked one of their media guys some questions. We'll see what comes back.

@@jim99west46 Thank you! I just watched this video today and it has me hoping not to get my gun back until they get it shooting all mainstream 9x19 SAAMI and NATO spec ammo without any keyholing issues. I got the same message from their media guy. I hope for everyone's benefit they get the issues worked out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqWlgaGMpKmKnJYsi=n5LgERFXtk-9juOe

It sounds like DD is better at making rifles than pistols. Why is that? Why did DD customer service not test for and find that the recoil assembly was walking off the seating notch under the breach block? Did they create a pistol division and hire a bunch of idiots to work in it? Did they hire a bunch of hudson people they shouldn't have? WTF.

I can only assume the guy in the warranty department took my gun apart, saw the guide rod was not installed correctly, and then assumed I was an idiot and sent it back without further investigation. I cannot say I blame him. I was a cop. Sometimes, you cannot see the forrest through the trees. It is too easy to roll up to a call, find an obvious problem, solve the obvious, and miss things because of a pending workload. I can only assume the technician had a stack of pistols across from him and fixed the obvious and moved on to the next one. I'm not sure if any of the folks from Hudson moved on to Daniel Defense. I called about the trigger before I sent it in for its first warranty repair. The guy I spoke with seemed like we could easily sit down and sip bourbon. The rest of my interactions have been via email or their website. So far, I'm not upset with their customer service folks. I sent Daniel Defense a link to his video with my online warranty claim submission. Their media guy said they reviewed it and sent it on to their engineers and leadership. If all that is true, there will not be a good excuse if the gun has issues when I get it back.

All guiderods move around. The assembly notch is only there to keep it aligned for reassembly. A glock does the same thing, but not this badly, so this may or may not be an issue. I'd say it's probably not, though, because its only purpose is to send the slide back into the battery, and it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The guiderod is only there to keep the spring from binding and kinking up. How do people not know this?

What did DD have to say for this second return?

I used the website for the RMA. Their media guy said he shared the video with their engineers and leadership. He said he was confident episode 4 would be positive. He was also happy I was hopeful rather than giving up on DD in the comments. *I’ve got less than 500 subscribers. I’m not even a gnat on an elephant to them. They don’t pay or compensate me in any way. I paid $1,399 for my Daniel H9 off GB.*

@@HollyrockFarm That's good to hear. I'm with you, I don't see any reason to give up on the gun - even though I'm also dealing with my second RMA. I believe everyone has the best intentions until proven otherwise.

@@nimbusR0234 After 15 years as a cop working the road, I usually start from the opposite...suspect everyone until they check out. I'm working on it. I believe DD will make it right because a couple of thousandths of an inch in the barrels can mean success or keyholing. The guide rod issue is likely either the guide rod or again the barrel being out of spec. DD has every incentive to make things right and have a redemption story rather than have a long lasting black eye.
