Komen never realised how close he was to the world record. Had he known , he would have pushed for it. Morcelli had just won gold in the 96 Olympics, and was still in good form.

True, at the meeting in Monte Carlo (Monaco, 1996) he was even closer to the world record. I think he just missed it by less than a tenth of a second. Still happy for him that he got the world record which still stands today. This proves that he is still the king of the 3000m.
