Visionary architect Daniel Libeskind (* May 12th, 1946) has succeeded in transforming himself from a writer, theorist and lecturer in architecture, to a constructor of major building projects around the world. Since his first major commission in 1987, he has won many international competitions to design high-profile public buildings.
This program looks at Libeskind’s work, focusing on the Jewish Museum in Berlin, one of his most important achievements, in which he used his powerful architectural language to express and process the trauma of the Holocaust and exile. It also touches on his artistic controversies - London's debate over The Spiral as well as his radical extension to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Other projects by Libeskind include the Imperial War Museum in Manchester, a concert hall in Bremen, Germany, the Jewish Museum in San Francisco, a University building in Guadalajara, Mexico, and an observatory in Uozu, Japan. He also served as an advisor on the planning of One World Trade Center 8which opened in 2014) and is currently working on the creation of the Albert Einstein Discovery Center in Ulm.
The dynamic and complex buildings Libeskind designs, bear the hallmark of his approach to architecture in which he seeks to give concrete form to philosophical ideas and to make meaningful connections with the past. Over and above his genius for producing buildings that are as expressive as abstract sculptures, this intellectual concern brings an extra dimension to his work that sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. Among the contributors to the film are colleagues and family, including his father, a survivor of the Holocaust.
