His buildings are dazzling on paper. In practice, many are extremely problematic-claustrophobic, disorienting, anxiety-provoking. The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco is a prime example. Visitors don't flow through a vessel which houses and enhances exhibitions. They stumble, distracted, trapped in a narrow maze, preoccupied by the fear of hitting their heads on some bizarrely-angled wall.
