This man's genuinity speaks for himself. It's in every detail; his tone of voice. And his detailed straightforwardness could imply he's taken his time to reflect on things for damn sure. I'd like to think that Nirvana/Heaven/WhoeverBigGuyUpstairsIs would never refuse him. A good man who's life would have been entirely different should he never fought in place of a bitter old man with a rubber stamper and comically large papers stacks on his desk.

This is the kind of vet that I wish more vets were like. They understand the realities of war, but they also respect life, unlike that other guy who thought killing was "awesome" This guy has a lot of wisdom.
@richardcanaan9244
@richardcanaan9244 4 жыл бұрын
The difference is that the younger guy was fighting murderers and rapists that strap bombs to little kids and send them to blow up soldiers, while the Vietnam vet was fighting people that were just serving their country
@genericusername8337
@genericusername8337 4 жыл бұрын
@@richardcanaan9244 That's actually besides the point. That younger guy would be just as happy shooting up people in Vietnam, or maybe even someone who stands outside his house (for one reason or another) looking "suspicious". He was genuinely happy to be out there blasting people. Someone who's more than just "okay" with killing in general. He seemed to have no interest in the politics of it, or contemplating it philosophically, he seemed indifferent to suffering, just seemed narrowminded and ignorant, truth be told.
@richardcanaan9244
@richardcanaan9244 4 жыл бұрын

@genericusername8337
@genericusername8337 4 жыл бұрын
@@richardcanaan9244 A lot of people having a certain attitude doesn't make that attitude desirable, it just makes it common. You can be a soldier and have wisdom about life. That guy was quick to judge, and unnecessarily harsh. By harsh, I don't mean tough, by the way. He probably is quite tough, but his black-and-white judgments about the things he talked about and the way he carried himself, that "no fucks given, I tell it like it is" -attitude didn't really make me respect him.

+Daniel Mullins on one hand i could see that going badly, but theres also quite a (well atleast imo) nice story that came out of WW2 about a german fighter pilot who didnt shoot down an American plane because it was so damaged, he could have shot it down without any return fire or even a challenge but chose not to because his Officer was very honor bound and imprinted those same views onto him, i think the quote from his officer was like ''if i ever find out you shot at and killed men who are parachuting i will kill you myself'' (quote might not be 100% accurate) because its just so dishonourable to kill defenceless people(which is how the german pilot viewed the damaged plane), But yeah, long story short, after this German pilot chose to not shoot down this plane and then escorted the plane to safe airspace the American pilot and what was left of his crew (if anybody else survived, i cant honestly remember) got back home safely, now fast forward like 40 years, and the american pilot is asked to come to a WW2 pilots reuninion, where he tells this story which had just sat in the back of his mind for decades, jaws dropped at the reuninion and he deceided to search for the other pilot, he wrote an article or a letter in a pilot association newsletter and eventually got a reply, from (i think) canada, it just said ''it was me'' or ''i was the one'' and after calling up the person who said this he spoke to the same german who spared his life and after confirming certain details of the story he knew he had defintely found him, and they became best friends for the last 20 years of their lives they both died in the same year just a few months apart from one another. You can probably find the whole story online somwhere, i read it in a book that i cant even remember the name of D: But yeah, sorry for my shitty summary but it's still a nice story :)

they were young and lifefull and rebellious they thought they were doing what they had to do for their country families and themselves so total respect and no blame. The problem is they weren't mentally trained at all for what they've been through didn't have any psychological help at all due to the time and culture they had to life with.he just burried this trauma and created an armor to carry on with his life in the most functional way. You can see in his face he has this feelings and guilt no human being can live with. But has learnt with very hard work and years of psychological help from ma point of view to just accept it n carry on. This old man has manage what lots haven't and I can only fully respect him. Blessings for all vets they have to handle what no one wants n can they'll have an open wound and will never return to the civil life if they don't obtain enough psychological help to express their personal thoughts in the most truly and sincere way accept it heal their psychological wounds and learn to at least try to focus on the best consequences these life experiences teach and be able to accept the past and don't let it destroy you

This guy has is it right. It's not about killing, in war, it's not only keeping yourself alive, it's also keeping your men (and now a days, women) also alive. You don't fight to keep only yourself from being killed, you are responsible for other people's lives too. You got to keep them alive!!! The enemy doesn't do this fairly or equally, that is why they are the enemy. The enemy doesn't ask permission to attack you (and your people) or ask permission to sneak up on you, or ask you if you "want" to be killed or if you "feel" like fighting! You have to be on guard and ready at all times, or be killed yourself. Kill or be killed, and the latter comes with ditching the responsibility of keeping your fellows alive too. What don't you criticizers understand?

We need to talk more about veterans and the criminal system. Veterans are trained to react to kill or be killed. all of a sudden their duty is completed... but they are dumped with the kill or be killed mind set into the civilian world. It is hard on us. 18 years old and you are taught / trained... to kill your threat. fall back into civilian life and your judgement is flawed.

Did he become politically aware when he returned from war? Was his PTSD diagnosed since his return, or did his youth give him resilience?

I wonder if it's a matter of growing older and maturing, or the fact that these men were drafted, but there is a striking difference in the outlooks between this and the young man featured yesterday. It's sad.

+ameliar There's definitely a difference because of the fact that nowadays, soldiers choose to go to war, they didn't back then, they were told to, so back then there was thousands who just didn't want to be there, now, almost all of them signed up to be there but the way Josh spoke was rare, it was insane, the things he said, your average soldier of today wouldn't speak like that, his opinion on war was that of a child's, which is weird because that usually gets knocked out of someone once they've been to war but not that guy

When you become a soldier you are no longer a person, you are a weapon! Every soldier knows that and are transformed in training. These men are just the weak ones and there words are a waste of breath. This is PTSD proper gander.

A lot of the Vietnam vets in this series seem to have a harder time reliving the moments and I think its because of the way society viewed the war at the time. These men were not welcomed back with open and concerned arms. They were treated like trash. Our society did these men a great injustice

Daniel is an interesting study, being a machinegunner and not an infantryman. He probably killed a lot more men than he knew and you have to wonder what that does to you, especially when you can't see them go down but you know you've hit them.

When you kill you don't think about it because someone on the other side has the same idea about you. The guy you came up on and killed him would kill you the same. Wont matter to him and you are dead. You do the same if you want to live in combat and make it home.

"Had he and I but met By some old ancient inn, We should have set us down to wet Right many a nipperkin! But ranged as infantry, And staring face to face, I shot at him as he at me, And killed him in his place. I shot him dead because- Because he was my foe, Just so: my foe of course he was; That's clear enough; although He thought he'd 'list, perhaps, Off-hand like-just as I- Was out of work-had sold his traps- No other reason why. Yes; quaint and curious war is! You shoot a fellow down You'd treat, if met where any bar is, Or help to half a crown." -Thomas Hardy

+Claude Pierre maybe it´s time to reconsider our humour in the current generation, so many (especially young, I am myself) people are loosing touch of reality and are unable to differentiate between (admittedly funny) fiction, and the reality, not in any way close to it, at all... but to be honest, I do not have a solution either...
@XFreeStyleZX

+BlaCGaming Everyone can differentiate between fiction and reality. And this humour worth reconsidering is called black humour. And it's completely fine, don't you think so? Life is harsh, nothing bad about laughing about it :)

+XFreeStyleZX I agree, we need more hapiness in our lives, but as in most subjects, different people feel different about things, and while I understand the reasoning behind it, I still think respect is more important here
