@mads 818 It was subtle. First it's his general tone when they are brought up, like he's almost annoyed people assume he met them. Next when asked if he's been "knighted" he's doesn't just say no, he quickly ads in that even if offered he "wouldn't" 04:22. Taken as a whole there is definitely an implication he's not interested in associating with the Royals at all.

@@wpaunan If I had to guess, and I do, it's probably because he's an atheist (not guessing about that part, he's stated that openly before), and the entire "knighthood" thing is firmly rooted in divine right concepts of nobility being literally chosen by god. And he probably (like me) finds the whole "royal family" and all that bullshit, rather silly, and wants nothing to do with it.

There was a lot of animosity toward the Potter series from church goers. As I was buying a new release, years ago, for our son, for Christmas, the teller was ranting about how evil these books were. Being inextricably tied to the Church of England may have had an impact on DR not meeting the RF.
