I know this video is several years old, but I still really appreciate this side by side. I have got to say, I don't think I could thrive without all three of these. The QBO is definitely my favorite of the bunch though. It's just the right kind of luminous, it entrances me in paintings. Thanks for all your work!

PBR7 Burnt sienna is a palette staple for me. It seems like it’s the undertone of half of everything; when I’m painting landscapes or still lifes or animals or even botanicals, I go through it like crazy. Between the other two, I prefer the transparent red oxide, because I love the granulation and I can easily mix a non-granulating earth orange from other colors on my palette. But I have to admit that the one place Quinacridone Burnt Orange really excels and has no substitute for me is in painting stormy skies with carbazole violet / dioxazine purple and indanthrone blue. It makes these great lurid greys and bruise-like greens and purples. It’s worth playing around in wet in wet just to see how those three interact, it’s fantastic.

ok, this comment had me go and pick up QBO today to see what kind of misty/angsty skies I could get. I live in the PNW and there's a specific type of ashy light blue that I could never seem to mix right, but this mixture, plus cobalt teal, hit the nail ON THE HEAD. Thank u so much for the info!! it's so satisfying to have the exact shade I need swirled into its own pan now. mwah 10/10

I was wondering why Mind of Watercolor loves M. Graham's TRO for his essential colors for limited palette since BO seemed much more rich and intense on its own, and now I totally understand why. Ahh, sweet relief. What GORGEOUS mixed colors with TRO.

Thank you so much for this video! I ended up choosing Quinacridone burnt orange cause it has everything I was looking for! Mossy greens and bright yellows and reds! I was thinking of transparent red oxide but when I think about it im not exactly needing a lot of jewel tones! And it just sparks joy! Again thank you sooo much!

Okay, so here are my two cents. I have both the QBO and BS on my main palette. I also used to have (MGrahams) TRO in addition but removed it because having all three was excessive. I find the BS and the QBO are different enough to have on the same palette and they have different uses. However, if you're only going to have one, I'd say go with the TRO because I feel it is a really fair compromise between the two in terms of granulation, staining, etc. That being said, I haven't used DS's TRO and hot dang are those some beautiful mixes!

What a thorough treatment of color combinations. Just great and so helpful. Thank you so much for contributing to the community knowledge in this complex domain of color choices and mixing colors. Re Carolyn's comment, I do agree that "elevator music" on narrated videos as good as yours is really unnecessary and distracting.

Thanks for this excellent series. Each episode prompts me to explore my paints. This time I found the elegant DS quin burnt scarlet, perfect for an in-the-works sunflower, using gauze in the background after an earlier video of yours. Sometimes I'm prompted to consider a new color or appreciate one I'm using. Thanks again.

When I started choosing Daniel Smith colours at the beginning of this year I held my breath and took a punt on Transparent Red Oxide. Although I'm more than happy with it I've been curious about QBO and BS wondering if I should have chosen one of them instead. After this demo I am very glad I went with TRO as it does exactly what i wanted it to. Thank you for the excellent comparison again.

I'm with Peta. I was first introduced to TSO through a DS signature collection of Steve Mitchell and grew to love its mixing features. So many teachers preach BS for mixing grays I thought I was missing something. But no, TSO is so much better for landscapes and abstract pieces. I do sometimes prefer a non-granulating form and this comparison explained very clearly why I might want to try QBO but for the sake of my all-ready-too-large palete I'm sticking with TSO.

Love the addition of the salt and the explaination for your approach for mixing. I also find myself drawn to the Transparent Red Oxide for the mixes. I really like the greens on the other two, though, and burnt sienna is such a staple for me. The Q Burnt Orange is so smooth and lovely, too, though. I feel like it would be terribly hard for me to choose between these three - I'd probably go with the red oxide in my palette for the mixes, and then have the other two to use as needed. This is such a useful comparison to refer back to, thank you.

The first Burnt Sienna I used was by W&N and I absolutely love it - probably because it isn’t just PBr07. After the W&N Burnt Sienna the Daniel Smith Burnt Sienna seemed sooooo insipid and lifeless - absolutely hate it and it has been relegated for use in ‘Jane’s Gray’, I went on to QBO as a replacement and I loooove it too, however I then discovered Daniel Smith’s TRO and I cannot believe how much I looooove it and how versatile it is - so both colours are staples on my permanent palette...

I just subscribed. This review is very thorough. I have Quinacridone Burnt Orange from Daniel Smith. I use it as a substitute for Burnt Sienna. I can make a very nice dark color when I mix it with French Ultramarine. I have not tried Burnt Sienna or Transparent Red Oxide. I think that if I could get another tube of paint it would probably be that Transparent Red Oxide. Those mixes are amazing,

Thanks for this video! I was also trying to figure out which one of the 3 I like the best, but currently have the three colors from different brands and different quality, so the comparison isn't fair. Like you I like PR101 the best. But I think the DS burnt sienna would be the better choice for nature and urban sketching. I like the more subtle natural colors you mixed with it!

TRIPLE SHOWDOWN BAM BAM BAMMMM!!! Geez though.....seeing all three of the charts together, they barely look all that different. I mean, they do look different, but I can definitely see why you chose to do all three together. I have burnt sienna and Quin burnt orange and was surprised when I fell in love with the burnt orange. Burnt sienna is just...burnt sienna. I feel like it’s a good and generally “necessary” color. While the transparent red oxide seems like it has much better mixing potential, I don’t really see a need to go out and get some when I’ve already got the other two.
@OtoKano

I watched because use burnt sienna but have been very curious about transparent red oxide. I am in love with how the transparent red oxide mixes beautifully with such a range of other colours! I may be overly drawn to clear colours but I would still choose that option as you can tone down a clear colour but you can't do much with a mix that is overly cloudy or dull. I love the colour showdowns and this comparison of three was super interesting to me as there are lot of earthy colours with fraternal twins that are quite hard to tell apart.

I feel like the transparent red oxide would be the one I would prefer to use, mostly because of how it mixed with the other colors. I tend to work in very muted colors, unless it's blue greens. So I feel if I used this for mixing, it would help me expand my horizons in brighter colors as well. I also really love the granulation it had on it's own too.

I didn’t even notice it! It was entirely in the background!

I would agree with removing the music. I attribute the distraction to my middle aged ears - background music didn't used to distract me when I was younger, but now it **really** does in videos with detailed commentary that I really want to hear (like yours!).

Your analysis are wonderful and thank you so much for sharing. I would just request that you dispense with the annoying music in the background. It's way too loud and very distracting. I find it very difficult to listen to you with the music competing so strongly.

Hello Dr ! You re saying burnt orange quin isn t granulating but daniel smith doesn t agree ? Can You please explain why ? I believe quinacridone colors are good for multiple layers ... so ?

So those transparent red oxide mixes literally made me gasp! They look so gorgeous, in really unexpected ways. Quin burnt orange is my tag team sister with quin gold when I need to go down a step in saturation and darkness. So always on my palette for sure. But I might just need to kick someone out of the palette and make room for TRO. (It is also well known that I have never been particularly impressed by burnt Sienna. )

yeah I was so impressed at the mixes Transparent Red Oxide created. Like, DUDE it's brown, how is it making these colors so bright??? I'm sorry to the color that will get kicked out of your palette, but kinda also proud to have made a difference to your palette :D

I’m surprised at how the quin. burnt orange performed when Daniel Smith labels it as a granulating color. I have used it where it has prominently granulated on certain cold press papers. I very much like the color as it is in my permanent palette. That transparent red oxide is really interesting to me though with those mixes!

In my limited experience, I've not managed to granulate a quniacridone colour. How interesting, what papers do you use?

Canson Montval and Canson 300 Series Watercolor Paper shows the Quin. Burnt Orange's granulation alright if you're looking for it. Bee Paper 140 lb Cold-Pressed 100% Cotton Watercolor paper and some other cotton papers shows subtle to strong granulation. I suppose it also depends on your technique of painting whether or not the granulation shows up. This is just my experience with the color! :)

wow that is super interesting! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am going to have to experiment on lots of different paper.

There's too much paper to try out there! However, I know that some art websites offer watercolor paper samples for you to try out if you want to experiment with them all without wasting a lot of money! :) That would make an interesting new series in the distant future

Oto Kano Legion Paper offers a watercolor paper sampler that you might check out, though I don’t know if the transatlantic shipping would be too high to be worth it.

I wish I could find a Burnt Sienna alternative that is NON-GRANULATING. I paint a lot of food, and granulation is my enemy. The only DS earth tones I can find are the Raw Sienna Light and Permanent Brown 😢

I think that's where the Quin Burnt Orange works (or any PO48 version)--adding a bit of phthalo or indigo blue can take down the brightness if needed (ultramarine will just add granulation back in). Hope you find your perfect color!

These have been awesome reviews. I learned a ton ! -lease ... could you please consider this with deepest respect ... I suggest that you use find a pointer or a pen, the constantly waving hands is very,, very annoying after a few minutes. The more videos the worse it became ...
