Ahhhh thank you Oto! I've been wondering about Bordeaux comparisons for threeeee years. This was helpful. I do like the hue of the Bordeaux more on it's own, but I mix more purple's and greens than I do oranges so I'd probably be wise to go with the violet instead, though neither is on my main palette at the moment!

So glad this cleared it all up for you :D For what you use it for, the quin violet sounds like the better choice for you.

So happy that you pointed out the Bordeaux/Ultramrine Blue mix. I'm loving it, too.

I have to give the nod to Quin Violet for its glazing, transparency and because it mixes better with cooler colors. I so appreciate the methodical way in which you go about testing pigments. It really helped me to make the best choice for my palette.

So hard to choose between the two, but with smaller palettes there's really no need for both! I think I would pick the quin violet, for the violets it mixes :) Thanks for the thorough comparison!

You are so welcome! I agree, you don't need both for most palettes :)

I happen to own both (I didn't realise they were so similar at the time), and I prefer the transparancy and glazing with Quin Violet. Makes it more versatile for my purposes. I also prefer Quin Violet for mixing - the Bordeaux feels more like a colour to be used on its own.

Oh hey, I wouldn’t have thought to compare these two! I use bourdeux all the time since it was one of the first like....20 colors I bought all at once when I decided to dive head first into Daniel Smith. =>.

Thanks for another awesome comparison! I love this series so much. I love the quin. violet, but the Schmincke one is more pinkish, the bordeaux on the other hand I don't have, but it's beautiful. It's so rich and reminds me of royal cloaks used centuries ago.

That was a great comparison - I think I like the Bourdeux I never thought of getting that color before. I don't have Quin Violet either, I do have 2 other PV19 colors. I find it so interesting that the same pigment can look so different - I have Schmenke Ruby Red and Daniel Smith Quin Rose... I recently purchased Daniel Smith Naphthamide Maroon PR171. Talk about addicted, now I need to add Bourdeaux! lol... Thank you for your videos.

Took me forever to watch this video. I have Bordeaux because that's what was available in the selection that I bought, and I love it. And even after seeing how the Quin Violet mixes with the cooler colours, I still liked the colours that the Bordeaux mixed better and that's how I've been using it, with cooler colours. I think unless I desperately needed to mix some cleaner colours for a commission, I wouldn't worry about buying the Quin Violet.

I know what you mean Amy. Bordeaux just has this presence that the Quin Violet lacks.

My recent purchase of Bordeaux was underwhelming... I tried to use it on Arches paper and it was so dull.... I tried to build it up... still dries very dull... I finally got angry and literally placed color on paper straight from tube - thick. those parts are bright and the moment it hits even a little water - it dulls.... I do not see the same in your test - which makes me wonder if this is my paper or just a bad batch from Daniel Smith.... was so hopeful for this color and so disappointed....

My DS Quin Violet looks nothing like yours. Mine is more mauve/purplish looking. Yours look far more on the red side. Very strange. They look like two totally different colours.
