Lovely colors! I have most of these shades, but some of them I haven’t used in a while. Seeing you swatch them makes me want to play with them all over again!

The colours are so pretty! I would love to get myself some Daniel Smith watercolour paint, I love the wistaria, I would use it with my tea cups and all the browns i could make lots of different coffee colours as well as the oranges and the lavender making tea.

I think Daniel Smith watercolor is great quality and I feel they have a moody feel to them. I am excited to paint!

Aussie Red Gold is actually a mix with py83, pr101 and pv19 I believe. If you like the genuine colors you need to try sodalite, so pretty.

I love the colours you picked - truly it is my ideal palette - nothing jarring, nothing too bright and fake looking. I am not a red fan but I loved the muted brown red colours - even the mayan orange looked great - a little muted and gentler. The genuine ones look so good - shame they are so expensive in the U.K.!

Thank you. I call this my moody palette. I did try and make it a bit softer moody feel. The genuine are lovely and have a rich look to them.

I really like your palette set-up; with the red's first. I'm expecting 5-6 new handmade pans tomorrow and I think I'll switch things up. A few hints.i'm playing with some mixes for one of my friends looking for granulating, separating mixes, some with a bit of natural shimmer. While trying some potters pink mixes a few days ago, found 2 w red fuschite added. 1 with PP, Red Fuschite & purpurite. You can use amethyst, but too shimmery for what we were looking for..also, less tinting strength. 2. Had my favorite "separating color", PY159, Volcano Yellow. There's a good reason Schminke adds it in so many of their supergranulating mixes! PP, Red Fuschite & PY159..separates to peach, pink, yellow and a sma bit ofred granulation & shimmer. Like my amethyst + PY159, it was another unexpected surprise! I'm about to go play with some blue mixes w kyanite. My daughter wants a dark moody blue or purple, granulating, with some separation, and a touch of shimmer. She's suggested cobalt blue..but I want to try Mayan and/or sodalight..with either PO48 or 49 (yes, we have some of the discontinued pigments 😊) and a touch of the kyanite. Then, its on to greens. Another "experiment" I'm doing for one of my Chinese tutors: mixing the tiniest dot of my real gold OR real silver calligraphy ink-into a few of the natural primatek's ... The minerals are closest to traditional paints, at least what they USED to be before the last 5yrs or so. The problem is the binders..DS binders don't play well with traditional xuan paper.🤷🏼‍♀️. I've figured out a workaround, but it doesn't work with all of them. I'm HOPING to get more mingjiao next week (a traditional "fish glue" in most Asian paints. Without writing a book-xuan paper is extremely thin and VERY absorbent. The mingjiao allows the pigment to absorb slower and sit on top of the paper) anyways, off to play..and THANK YOU for this new palette idea! Please excuse any typos..i'm actually legally blind and my iPad is being replaced. This temporary Fire tablet is VERY hard to type on & impossible to edit!

Thank you. Yes I love starting with red, it just makes more sense to me. It is unfortunate about the discontinued pigments. You are so on top of your pigments! Volcano yellow is a win. The paper experiment with the additive for absorbency sounds so interesting.

@@RaspberryColors 😂 Already started re-arranging my palette last night. For some reason, the yellows first just didn't fit my style of painting. My daughter says its my ADD, My best friend says I'm just weird. At my age, I don't give a *#&$ what anyone thinks. 😂 My brilliant late son spent over 12 years in China and decided to drag me out of a deep depression about 9 years ago. Losing my fiance, then dealing with cancer for 2 years..along with losing my medical career due to my health, took their toll. He had shown an ink & pencil drawing I had done of one of our horses..to his friends 85yr old great grandmother in Chengdu. Lili, was a retired art, culture and history professor who had taught here in the US for 35yrs before retiring back to China. Her wonderful, now late husband, was an MD and also certified in traditional Chinese medicine. Lili became my personal tutor, first in calligraphy, then painting-the same way art is taught in China. Unfortunately, we spent the first 4 years spending more time on history, culture...basically learning that 99% of what I thought I knew about China was wrong. And language.. although, living here in the Poconos right now, its impossible to immerse yourself. However, my sons friends on WeChat, when I have a working device, make up for it. When my son died suddenly almost 2 years ago, my eldest, my best friend and I decided to start finding ways to fuse western and eastern styles. His legacy is bringing people together from different cultures, teaching folks that "different" doesn't mean its wrong. Its been a challenge because I had NO experience in western watercolor..and the 2 mediums are more different than you'd think. A few years ago, I had a 2 hour feisty lecture from a 96yr old Chinese grandmother about masking fluid and how kêxiâo 可笑 (ridiculous 😂) it is. Believe me, don't argue with a Chinese grandmA. 😂 This color/pigment thing...over the past 5-6 years, traditional Chinese paints have gone through very unwelcome transition. Huge companies like Maries and Paul Ruben's parent company, who had literally done ONLY natural traditional paints..expanded into the western markets. In doing so, they unfortunately picked up some bad western practices..namely, its OK to sacrifice quality for quantity and profit. This is completely contrary to Eastern culture..especially in the art world. There is currently a huge backlash in china. Chinese paints are the ONLY traditional art supply not covered by the intangible cultural heritage act in China. Brushes, paper (first invented in China), ink and ink sticks, even ink stones..are covered. But this act requires the manufacturer's to maintain historical practices and quality, even has oversight. The billionaires that now own these companies, are doing something else forbidden in china...lobbying. and if they don't get their way? They'll pick up their companies and move elsewhere. As a result, artists and professors like Lili & Dr Chen, one of my current tutors, have me trying to do these experiments (Rosas gallery single pigments are now used with mingjiao brush water in Dr Chen's and other classes), as they continue to fight with the govt to bring back traditional pigments..and declare it an intangible cultural heritage. In Feb, during the People's Congress, there were protests and they promised to bring it up this fall. The Spring meeting this year was a bit full with the re-election of Xi. In the meantime, we continue our quest to find western paints we can adapt to xuan paper. Some american paints are refusing to sell in the Chinese market, unfortunately, including DS. One of my sons friends is hoping to be in Washington in May to talk to them about the work we've been doing...and what they are missing out on. We shall see. 😁

@@elaineg60 it is unfortunate when the companies sacrifice for profit or as I say become a sell out. People around the world have so much to offer from their history and traditions, so much we all could learn. Sorry to hear of your son, my condolences. Thank you for sharing.

What paint brand can you recommend for traveling? I live in a very hot, humid climate and have to keep my Sennelier upright. I have some Scminke, American Journey/DaVinci….

PS Because of some of the specific "experiments" I'm doing & trying to match up with natural mineral colors..others I've recently gotten that I'm finding useful in my western & eastern paintings, (see oto kano's videos for a more realistic overview than DS website); Piemontite- a deep red brown with heavy granulation. Minnesota Pipestone...i realize because its derived from natural minerals, batches CAN be different.mine appears as a rich potters pink .. My friends was more beige with an orange coming through in light washes..mine didn't have that. Jadeite is a much more natural green & easy to tone down; and for very slight shimmer, bronzite-transparent & makes some beautiful pastels. Green fuschite is heavy on the shimmer, but just a tiny bit in darker greens = a slight leaf shine without looking like mica sheen. So far, sugilite is just TOO much..still trying to find ways to tone it down. Burnt bronzite is great with darker reds..still playing with it. I'm not a fan of mica paints and rarely use metallics. But, the natural mineral shimmer, especially in mixes and toned down, can give just the right effect. One more love my amethyst..but never use it straight. But a little bit mixed in with purpurite? PERFECT!
