Camel artist watercolor is as good as any international brands. I am says this with experience of doing watercolor for 20 years. I used winsor Newton, shiminke, dS, senellier, white night, mijjelo, dalar rowney etc. And I had them long before they were available in India. To all aspiring painters my only request is...just draw and draw and paint and paint. Do not think about brands. What matters is the brush stroke not the paint nor the brand.Camlin used to import WN arches and canson products in India. I have a feeling that Camel artist watercolor is based on WN colors. Even I have camlin kolinsky sable brush ( I am from ancient age). Camel did really work hard to bring affordable paint in india.

NO WAY. Camel isnt as good any any international brand, just because its from our home country we simply CANNOT say anything we feel like. We have admit to that International brands are way way better and have unmatchable quality. If you feel no difference, maybe you have used the local versions or the chinese made variants.

Great review! I was interested as I use Camlin tubes and was wondering how it fares with Daniel Smith. Not surprisingly Daniel Smith is far better. I feel Camlin should let us know the pigments they use. As for their quality, they are pretty good. The plus point in your videos is the way you speak: so clear and to the point.

They now have pigment information in their website. I too like Camlin watercolours for the price and quality. The import taxes and other cost also the higher standard of living in the US marks up the price of Daniel Smith a lot, which makes it way more expensive. They are good quality for sure, and better than Camlin but I don't think the difference in quality is worth the price. It kind of became a standard for Indian artist to use the more expensive foreign professional watercolours for their artwork that they want to sell. Also the 80-100 year lightfastness is it really important? an art really doesnt depend on the lightfastness of the watercolours It also depends on the quality of paper and the conditions on how it is kept. Camlin with lightfast pigments can surely be on the same level as DS. Also true if you are working with watercolours for long you know you dont need all shades. Basic warm and cool primaries are enough if you really want the "professional watercolours". Otherwise camlin watercolours maybe just as good as daniel smith. 🧡

Thank you for this video. It was very informative and helpful especially the meaning of paint details inscribed on the tubes. Comparison of camlin vs Daniel Smith is also very relevant for Indian watercolor aspirants. Looking forward to more such enlightening videos.

Great reviews! I used Camel watercolor when I was starting out in painting many years ago. Over the years I used WN cotman and as I ran out of colors I slowly switched to Sennelier, Daniel Smith, M Graham and White Nights watercolors. Sennelier, M Graham and white nights use honey in the paint.

Daniel Smith are my favourite, but I am yet to try out Sennelier and White Nights.

I didn't expect such a difference in vibrancy. I love my Camel colors most importantly because of their affordability but I will definitely be investing in more expensive paints down the road.

I have recently invested in sennelier 24 colour palette , but it's far better then camel or brusto paints.Camel gets chalky when u blend them , brusto is better then camel, but no comparison with sennelier . Plan to buy DS or HWC in future.Still learning.Might buy when I m at pro level.

Thank you so much. God knows what serendipity led me to your video, and then a watched a few, but it was all information that i was looking for. Very useful. The comparision is so accurate. I have noted this difference and it is a stark one. Plus, to me, some camlin colours appear chalky especially burnt sienna and some blues. I could be totally wrong, Once again, thank you for this

The most important thing everyone must notice is to do watercolor, you need to use a standard paper like 300 gsm watercolor paper. The paints don't matter much. Camlin Or WN or crayola. Pay attention to the paper.

Both the brands sit at two extremes of the artists grade colours available in India. I used camlin student grade colours as a student years ago though I found poster/gouache more easier. At that time they seemed satisfactory but not great. During this lockdown I took the opportunity to get back to art albeit with trepidation. After much research I settled on White Nights which are Russian and sit towards the lower end of the price spectrum. I find them very affordable and good in terms of quality. I have painted with them last few months and they are intense, easy to use and rewet (@vikram14 on insta). I do intend to use DS or Schminke but that’s in the future when I get better! Good review though!

@@theabcworkshop Hi they are easily available now at a lot of stores (physical and online). I am waiting to upgrade; luckily I have friends in Seattle so a trip to Daniel Smiths flagship store is very much on the list! Till then I am practising my skills!

Vikram Naik I would be reviewing Nevskaya Palitra, Sonnet soon. It targets beginners.

Your reviews are very simple to understand quite informative. Though I have not used anything other than Camembert student and artist grade paints being a beginner, I have heard a lot about Mijelo Mission Gold water colours which are cheaper (perhaps) compared to Winsor Newton. Will you please review this brand ? Thanks - Jayant Gadkari
