America has survived 240 years because we have been a "sporting" nation. In sports, one team wins and one loses... you end the game in cordiality and even good spirits, opponents but not enemies. We are losing that "sporting" mentality. Increasingly we have become a "with me or against me" nation, where those against me are my enemies. America cannot survive this mindset. Both Left and Right are responsible for this decline in civility. If you want to "MAGA", then be civil to one another and realize there is room for a range of views.

There is sonething oxymorous in this analysis. First, you say that politicians align themselves around 'the populist' (as in Italy in the 1920s) but then politicians would be opponents to such a degree that they would view each other as enemies. And what's the mechanism that this situation can lead to democratic breakdown? I am not convinced.

Me too. Luckily, we DO have strong institutions. If Biden wins the election, the same secret service men who protect Trump now will automatically switch to Biden on 12:00 PM, January 20th, 2021, and there's not a damn thing Trump could do about it. He will be escorted out of the White House and anyone trying to protect Trump from being escorted out will be tried for mutiny if Trump attempts a coup. My worry is what may happen before the election. I worry Trump might implicitly signal to his rabid supporters to go to polling stations and intimidate any group that generally votes Democrat, primarily black and Latino voters. However, if Biden wins, which current polls show Biden winning a landslide because of how abysmal Trump's current strategy is, and his abysmal response to COVID-19, Trump will have to leave. Trump almost certainly isn't intelligent enough to preform a successful coup. He will be dragged out in handcuffs by the same people who protect him now if he tries. Secret service's allegiance is to the United States constitution, not the president. It's drilled into their brains. So don't worry too much. Just be sure to vote. I don't like Biden. I was a Bernie bro, but Trump needs to go.
