I saw some RR improvement videos and I was like "i don't see the difference". Many of those videos also used different cloud conditions for old vs new. Making if even harder. Your video nicely points out the subtle differences and now i can finally say - yes, i do see what is different and what has been improved
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
I made a point to record plenty of footage before the update dropped and then use exactly the same replay files again to record the new footage 😉 so what you're seeing is exactly like for like before/after. Shadows look massively different in some shots and it might seem like it's a different time of day but I can assure you it's the same 👍 although this meant that I couldn't use any of the new cloud settings in this video apart from the VR footage which didn't have a before/after comparison. Overcast looks super nice but the only shot of it I could sneak in was driving the Porsche Cup at Sepang unfortunately.

if anyone was qualified to comment on the new Raceroom update ... DDF is the man! personally for me if i run at 1440 with everything up ... i get a better image [no jaggy barriers etc] and it runs with vs on at 165fps ... only in the replays it rarely drops a few frames. i think the tweaks they have done with the existing engine are good ... and we probably would not know unless they reverted to the old build! kudos to the devs still pumping out such updates ... much appreciated .
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
You make a great point regarding people not knowing the differences unless they reverted to the old version, which is why I made sure to record plenty of footage before the update dropped 😉 that way I could use *exactly* the same replay files and do a direct before/after comparison to see what's changed. Things like the z fighting, motion blur artefacts and odd reflections are things which you don't see any more in the new update and wouldn't even realise you're missing (for example the motion blur psychedelic artefact I mentioned when changing cameras quickly). Things like this always reminds me of my sound engineering days back at uni. If you do a good job then nobody even knows you're there despite you doing all the work to make the band sound good. If you do a bad job then everyone's trash talking you because the mic is feeding back or you can't hear the singer enough etc 🤣 you can't win!

I have just had my first go since the update this past hour.....they seam to have optimised for VR much better. My previous play was a few weeks back and OpenComposite had stopped working, and Steam VR was just a stuttery mess, but I've just tried it with SteamVR again, and it's great. I had a lot of the candy pretty high and sharpening works REALLY well and my VR framerate had no noticeable stutter (R5 5600x and RTX 3070), so a massive thumbs up from me!

I haven't driven Raceroom in a while, and I AM impressed with the updated graphics. But has anyone noticed how these cars drive now? I have driven all the racing sims including Assetto Corsa (probably the king of tire models). I drove Raceroom for hours yesterday with many types of race cars, from high to low downforce, tin tops, open wheel, you name it. I had a blast! I can't think of a racing sim that represents how I would expect a race car to behave better than Raceroom. I'm going to be doing a lot more Raceroom from now on.

Assetto isn't king in physics department I would even say it's heavily outdated at this point since the competitors moved a bit forward in last year or two because for some reason modders can't improve that aspect of the engine when they did all the graphics and everything - Assetto tires works very bad especially on curbs but there are also other issues with them which is shame

Sadly I don't think anyone will ever give iRacing a run for it as it's so difficult to get those kind of player numbers anywhere else, especially considering RaceRoom has been a bit of a ghost town for a while now. It's one of those chicken/egg situations though as nobody wants to join an empty server...but how does a server become not empty if no one ever joins? Not sure I completely agree with you on that one, I'm getting some very nice visuals in iRacing (even in VR on decent settings)...although performance has been super hit and miss recently with some stutters and screen freezes, even with my new CPU upgrade. I think iRacing is definitely capable of pushing hardware further and the new Tempest weather system really shines through (rain looks fantastic, spray is terrifying in the best way possible 😂) with plenty of room to be developed even further in the future, whereas RaceRoom is definitely much closer to the potential limits of what can be done with the game engine. Still can't take anything away from the fact this latest RaceRoom update is a big improvement though 👍
@MrEDETАй бұрын
@@DDFRacer Yep I see a lot of stutter issues reported with the update released 3 months ago. Have you tried the season update released a couple of days ago already? Problem with Raceroom is that it run okayish on my system using Opencomposite, but when I switched to a G2 Reverb I couldn't use Opencomposite anymore, doesn't work with WMR in Raceroom and the performance was so poor even with graphics set to the lowest that I unfortunately had to stop playing Raceroom. I kept hoping they would upgrade from DX9 (which is a whopping 22 years old now..) but that would probably mean building a complete new graphics engine. Iracing is also old but they keep improving everything, are also working on a new graphics engine now. Raceroom has, besides this polish update, never really made any serious progress and that's a shame since I do love the game.

The issue with DX 9 (along with 10 and 11) is under the hood, not graphically. This is a single threaded API, which means one's performance depends on clock speed. The higher the better. GTR 2 from 2006 runs on DX9 and has great time of day transitions.
@DDFRacerАй бұрын

I sure am 🤓 still going strong after nearly 8 years of heavy use. Every video or stream I've ever done is on that CV1 and I've been keeping an eye on upgrade options for years now but, honestly, I haven't found something that ticks all the boxes for me. Needs to be affordable and also use a direct connection, none of that battery / wireless / link nonsense and increased latency as I only ever use it for sim racing and don't need to be portable. The Quest 3 might be the most affordable/best value option but it's not direct wired and that's an instant pass, whereas the other headsets which connect via DisplayPort to the GPU are all super expensive and might also need sensors for SteamVR as my Oculus ones will be redundant. The PSVR2 is getting good reviews though now it's PC compatible and the Pimax Crystal Light coming out later this year also looks pretty good to be fair. I tried out a friend's Varjo Aero a few months ago and, whilst it was definitely a step up, I wasn't as blown away as I was expecting to be considering the insane cost of it so I'm pretty happy to keep using the CV1 until it decides it doesn't want to live any more 👍

Is that z fighting what you talk about the thing what i have in VR? The flickering is driving me nuts sometimes. Especially with shadows of fences and buildings. Only VR not on a normal screen. Thanks for your content. 👍🏼
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
If it's only happening in VR then it could potentially be an antialiasing issue or too much sharpening maybe? Also maybe a resolution issue? Normally the z fighting would be the same whether it's on a monitor or a VR headset as it's the same textures being displayed in the same manner, just on a different type of screen which shouldn't really affect it. It depends on whether the flickering is happening around the edges of things (definitely an antialiasing issue) or in the middle of them (more likely a resolution issue).

@DDFRacerАй бұрын
Having talked with the dev team about this a few times, it's not because they don't want to but more because they actually can't do it unfortunately. RaceRoom is running on old tech and the actual game engine itself has been handed from one company to another over the years, to the point where the people currently working on it now are dealing with code they didn't create or have the ability to reverse engineer without breaking a lot of other things in the process. It's probably one of the main reasons why we don't have things like day/night, rain and so on, but that's just pure speculation from myself so don't take it as truth. They're a pretty small team with very limited resources and it'd effectively be like creating a whole new game engine from scratch 😬 so when you need to keep paying the bills then unfortunately things like custom dashes might be relatively low down on the to-do list I'm afraid. Does it update automatically? I just played last night After updating Steam. Don't remember if it told me. It took 30 minutes to load RR!!. After over clocking my gtx 750 . RAN high 30's fps with settings maxed. More realistic to me than normal 60fps. with no graphics controls.IMHO. it got blurry during some violent moves. Like in real life.

Yeah it's a free update and should happen whenever someone starts steam the next time 👍 as far as I know it'll need to do it before you can launch the game. It's a fair few GB so might explain why it took so long for you 😉

Tried it, but was pretty disappointed though. Was also hoping the Spa-Francorchamps would be updated, but no, still the old track. It still can't compare to AC with Pure 2.0 LCS.
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
Agreed, although trying to compare anything to modded AC with those mods is asking for disappointment 🤣 it looks fantastic and probably one the most visually stunning sims out there now with the 2.0 Pure release that dropped last week. What we're comparing here is the before/after on RaceRoom itself which is a pretty big and very welcome, if long overdue, jump in quality. Without a brand new game engine then it's clear that RaceRoom can only be taken so far but I'm very happy that it looks better *and* runs better now too.

Yes the AI was a bit stupid.....I was racing at Watkins Glen and kept quitting and restarting to test different graphics settings, and every restart ALL the AI spun at the first corner.
@jamesleegteАй бұрын
Some AI has been updated but it appears it’s only the popular newish cars. At Autodrom Most the 992 cup cars have awesome AI, then race the WTCR2019 at Most and they are an absolute joke. It’s basically a lottery which car class have great AI or terrible AI. Try WTCR2019 at Ningbo full no chicane, not one AI can get through T6 and the AI fastest lap is between 5.5 to 10 seconds slower than mine because sector 1 they can’t get through T6. It’s actually embarrassing. It’s been reported on their forum for months and they have only updated a handful of classes since the physics update in 2023.
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
As much as it pains me to agree, I do. A fair few years ago when I first tried RaceRoom and was won over, one of the main attractions was the superb AI and options for awesome offline racing (including the adaptive AI feature) which sadly seems to have gotten worse recently. I know they've released a lot of new cars since then and also updated the physics/tire model plenty of times too, so there's a lot of new variables in the mix which I would imagine takes a _lot_ of time to work through and test. Probably way too many combinations considering the small size of the dev team so unfortunately there'll be things that get missed. These days I hardly do any AI racing but if I had to pick my favourite then I'd actually say iRacing is the best, believe it or not. Many people rave about AMS2 but I actually find their AI to be some of the worst out there 😅 maybe not in terms of wheel to wheel racing once you get it dialled in, but as soon as the weather changes then forget about it. Track to track is different too, some will be much faster than others, and forget about any kind of sensible pit strategies or blue flags I'm afraid (as I'm painfully discovering with my AMS2 Racing Life career mode).

My vr is tanking on fps, anyone got any good settings? Also can't get open xr to work I know that would help
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
There's a new 'VR optimised' graphics preset which could be a good place to start, although I've heard a few people say that auto exposure isn't too nice for fps in VR so definitely turn that off. Also anything other than 0x time progression has been known to affect performance too 👍 and shadows are always a good place to start to find more performance as well. It might be a little time consuming but worst case scenario would be to turn *everything* down to low and see how it runs, then turn one setting up to high at a time and see what kind of impact it has. I did that with EA WRC recently and found a few things to avoid and a few others that I could crank up for a big improvement with very little impact at all.

I keep giving RR a shot but every session I play the FFB on my Fanatec DD feels horrible. Idk what it is I’ve tried making adjustments in game and in Fanalab but I just can’t get it to feel natural. I play iRacing mainly but even Rennsport has a better out of the box feel. What am I missing in the game? I have to be missing a setting adjustment somewhere.
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
I'm running a Fanatec DD here too (CSL DD 8Nm to be specific) and think the FFB is really nice in RaceRoom so let's work this one out mate. First of all, check the Fanatec forum for the official settings post for RaceRoom. That made a big difference for me compared to the default settings for the wheel. Link here: forum.fanatec.com/discussion/657/raceroom-pc-fanatec-recommended-settings Then in-game there aren't too many settings to play with but here are mine: - 100% strength - 0% minimum force - 100% maximum force - 50% stationary friction - 10% engine vibrations - 30% bump amplification - 10% gearshift effects Also, don't forget to map some buttons on the FFB settings page in RaceRoom to show the in-car FFB meter and then also to be able to bump it up/down as needed when you drive. Each car is pretty close by default but in some cases you might need to adjust it so it stays in the green even when going through heavy load corners. If you're in the red and flat lining at the top of the FFB graph then you're clipping and losing detail, too low and you won't feel the smaller details which makes Raceroom really nice in my opinion. Hope this helps! 👍
@underSTATEDexcellenceАй бұрын
@@DDFRacer We have the same wheel base so I’m gonna test this out. I heard RR had a better FFB feel then iRacing that’s why I wanted to get into it but my settings haven’t made a difference for me. I appreciate the feedback and mini tutorial.

Is this on a monitor or in VR? If it's in VR, double check that your supersampling settings haven't changed and you're running at a much higher resolution than before, the update may have reset some things without you realising. If it's on a monitor then double check what resolution/refresh rate you're using in the RaceRoom settings, it's possible that may have also reset to a lower refresh rate and is limiting your fps.

It's not a so significant update, when people with more refined eyes say that it's just a better filter, they are not wrong. The happening phenomena here is people are so used to the ugly old graphic which have never been updated and once they got something new they are happy. Some sort of Stockholm syndrome here...if it was AMS2,AC or an another sim had a graphic update like this they would be 'crucified'... Graphically wise the result is better than the old one , any result would be better anyway...but not even in the scope of 2010's standarts. It's just a bit more colored , more shiny, but more dark and dull than before. It's like the tweaking has not been made by a 3d graphic specialist otherwise there are basic rules that should have been respected in lighting and colorimetry. The issue with the sim racing community is the lowering of exigence after long period of desperation and sim studio exploit that. Fortunately we still have some studio that still raise the bar themselves without any community begging then Stockholm syndrome involvements.
@AramisTetrisАй бұрын
Raceroom never was about graphics and never will be. Just as AMS2 never will be about physics. But as soon as they improve the graphics that it becomes acceptable the whole title becomes much better. Same story with AMS2. The physics is still not good, but they worked on it and it becomes acceptable and the game as a whole is pretty good thanks to that. BTW if someone likes a game and you don't doesent mean they have Stockholm syndrome :D
@XirpzyАй бұрын
Imagine any other type of gamer being this miserable. 30%+ fps increase, better culling and mesh rendering, better shaders, blur, reflections and lighting, no more zfighting and sim racers still complain. Claiming its just a filter is just so wrong. Just the fps increase alone would have been praised if it was a shooter lol
@DDFRacerАй бұрын
Credit where credit's due though, to be fair. It's a decent upgrade for RaceRoom, not only in terms of visual quality, but in terms of performance too as it now runs on higher settings with more frames per second. That's pretty significant if you ask me and a welcome bonus for anyone who spends their hard earned free time driving in this sim. Agreed, it'll never look as good as modded AC, AMS2 or any of the other (also very enjoyable) sim racing titles made in the past 10 years on newer game engines, but Raceroom has a fantastic selection of cars/tracks, really nice physics and FFB etc. They're a small dev team and I think they do a good job with the very limited resources they have available to them considering the current software can only be taken so far. If they had a bigger budget and more staff then I don't doubt for a second they'd be coming up with a brand new game engine which runs on DX12 and has all the latest features, including all of the awesome features the existing one has. I mean, why wouldn't they? It'd certainly sell a lot of copies, that's for sure. Believe it or not, people (myself included) play RaceRoom because they enjoy it for themselves, not because someone has locked them in a basement and forced them to play it against their will to the point where they now _think_ they actually genuinely enjoy it...which sounds like an extreme thing for me to say but that's kind of what Stockholm Syndrome is after all 😅 right?

@@DDFRacer may be we need something like Dx11, GI, DLSS of FSR , real PBR track textures, Linear graphic, etc...marketing wise I don't think this kind of update will grow Raceroom and the team behind it. It's just a standardisation but not innovation. Today we will witness a peak of players but after few months most of people will forget that RRRE graphic was weak and then there was and update in sept 2024 ( still tagged as better filters btw )...people will take it as it is and other than saying that the graphic is still old, will still blame it for the other weak area. One of the big problem with Raceroom is the business model, it's a rental sim ( always online) with expensive content.
