Book 1 - The Colour of Magic - a Wizards book, Book 3 Equal Rites - a witches book, Book 4 Mort - a death book, Guards! Guards! - a City Watch book, The Wee Free Men - a Tiffany book (younger readers) these are "starter" books for the series in that they are the starting books for the different sub stories within all of Discworld, Going Postal is the start of the Industrial Revolution series of sub books but this starts A LONG way into the series so while you can start here you may not appreciate as many in world jokes that are established in earlier books

One of the best things about Discworld is that because each book is a complete story, you can pick up pretty much any book and have the best time of your life. That's why I think "reading orders" are nonsense. When I first got into Discworld, I didn't read them in any order. After my first (Small Gods, which got me hooked) I would just grab whatever books that were available or caught my eyes at the library. And because I read Discworld out of order, it was so much more of a treat to catch references/Easter eggs/favourite characters from other books!
@flavoredwallpaper Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I started in publication order until about Guards Guards. Loved that book so much that I started reading out of order, to read more books about the Watch. I read the series out of order since then.

For those who giggled at the name (Moist von Lipwig), it's also a pun based on who he is - A "lipwig" is a false mustache. Moist is a master of disguise. *Edit:* Oh, and Daniel, it's pronounced "More Pork". "Ankh-Morpork". (Also, a "Morpork" is a kind of owl, IIRC). The name isn't _just_ to sound silly, it's also a riff on many medieval towns founded on rivers, often being two towns that grew together.

Can't wait to see your discworld vids, I am nearly 40 and have adored this series and the wider works of Terry Pratchett since I was about 11 when my uncle gave me a second hand copy of the colour of magic as a present. So much of my personality and my sense of humour was shaped by Terry Pratchett and his amazing Discworld books, to this day one of the few genuine regrets I have from my life is that I never got to meet him before he passed and thank him for creating such a vibrant creative world full of amazing fully realised incredibly funny characters.

I don't think there will ever be a book quote closer to my heart then the one where Moist says something along the lines of "He could keep living this life as long as he told himself he could stop the con and run away at any time." Not an exact quote there but something about Moist's whole thing really did make me cry as an imposter syndrome/anxious person. It's such a well written and funny book but something about how Moist is written and him being forced into a position where people love him, and he succeeds because of his strengths and making it look effortless while you the reader can see how desperately he is working the entire time to just keep on top of everything just hits so deep. Terry Pratchett is the absolute GOAT and I do not think there will ever be another like him.

@@Panda_Roll While I wouldn't call any of the early books bad, I definitely know what you mean. Going back and reading some of the earlier stuff, it doesn't quite have the same mastery as the later novels. My school librarian introduced me to Discworld about 20 years ago, suggesting that I might like to give them a try. So I picked up the first one on the shelf that I saw, and read it. It was The Light Fantastic. I thought I'd just been dropped into the story _in medias res_ or something (not that I knew that phrase at the time), I had no idea what was going on, but I still found it funny. Then I read The Colour of Magic, and it all made sense. After that it turned out my sister has a few random old Pratchett books, so I read those. Then there was this second-hand book stall in the local market, which almost always seemed to have a Discworld book, so I read those in whatever order I bought them in. Then I started picking them up new from the bookshop or getting them from the library, again in no particular order. I loved discovering the world this way, jumping backwards and forwards in the time line. It helped to make books even more re-readable, because when going back I would understand in-jokes and have a greater appreciation for cameos that I hadn't picked up on the first time. When years later I decided to read the series chronologically, that experience was made more rewarding because all the jumbled threads of discworld knowledge I had got ironed out, and I could for the first time trace those threads through the series. So my point is, random reading order is fine and has its own rewards. I'm glad I found the series that way. But these days when I do a full re-read - which I tend to do every couple of years - it is generally chronological. That works, too.

I am most especially looking forward to when you get around to discussing Night Watch, which I think is Pratchett's best novel, period (I personally rate it above even Good Omens). Most of this comes from my experience with it, though. My Dad enjoys the Discworld books a lot, but he has a case of dyslexia that makes reading recreationally difficult for him, so I would read them aloud when he came home from work. He was a USAF Officer at the time, did two tours in Iraq, and also had done a tour where he had command of a squardon of airmen, so the way Pratchett handled the experience of troops on the ground, and especially the way he ended the book with how they should properly be honored, really resonated with him. The book made him both laugh and cry, and the fact that we shared that experience together is something I'm going to treasure for life.

YES I WAS SO EXCITED FOR DISCWORLD CONTENT I'd love a rundown/reviews/thoughts of each character based series! Like so the death series, or the night watch and Vimes, or Tiffany etc!

I started with the death collection. And now mort is one of my favourite books. I devoured it on the flights to and from my home country. Going from laughing, to crying, to being amazed by the world and how introspective it can get.

I started on Mort but didn't read any after for years (although I loved Mort it didn't will me to read on), what got me back in was Going Postal for sure, it started a month of just reading Terry Pratchett like an addict.

Same situation- I started with guards guards but didn't finish it (idk why, quick bout of insanity probably) but picked up going postal, then immediately bought as many books as I could and started from the top

I can’t wait for this! I’ve wanted to start discworld so bad, but everyone seems to have different opinion on where to start. Usually (Guards Guards, or Mort), but I need the Disheveled Goblin God’s inferior all factual opinion! Then I guess my quadriplegic ass will be buying a lot of audiobooks for Discworld😂😂

It realy depends what genr youlike the mot, like guard guard and potal are pretty opposites perspectives, postal about a swindler and him getting really endearable and serious goo character devlopement, as post minister. as weird as it sounds. Also deals with financial crimes. While guards is about well guards. through in a very fun unortodocx way. mort is more an entry if you llik metaphysical oh witches do explore gender, and useful magic. all have their plus. Just pick one genre you vibe with the most.

Great to see... some Discworld reviews, one of my top 5 authors 😉 I read each book consecutively, and then we lost Terry... I received his last book, just after he passed... but I haven't read it as I want to always have one more book of his to read...

My brother was into disc world for years, but going postal was the first one that I read. Picked it up in a store when it came out, and I absolutely fell in love. Definitely due for a reread.

Daniel! One of the short and sweet Discworld novels that had me absolutely rolling was Eric! Maybe try that one next?

I think you've missed something big if you think Discworld doesn't take itself seriously. Discworld absolutely takes itself seriously. It's just also very funny. Neil Gaiman has reported multiple times on Pratchett's assertion that serious is not the opposite of funny; the opposite of funny is un-funny. Pratchett was a tremendously angry person who saw a lot of terrible wrongs in the world and knew how to dress them up in a way that would make people laugh, but he still took those wrongs seriously.

"Going Postal" was one of my first Pratchett reads but it's been a while and I don't remember it well. Inspired to reread!

Just read Going Postal a couple weeks ago. Definitely now one of my favorite Discworld entries as well! Would love to hear you review The Truth or Night Watch in a video.

Going Postal was actually my first Discworld book, at the recommendation of a good friend of mine. I was instantly hooked, and I've counted Discworld as one of my top series/worlds of all time ever since. I look forward to seeing you deep dive into this wonderful world!

Lord Havelock Vetinari is a super villain mastermind of the best kind. He cares about the people of his city, and even the Disc as a whole. However he is completely ruthless when it comes to getting what he wants, and learning that when he was a member of the Guild of Assassins that his weapon of choice was words fits so well. This book is one of the many examples of how he gets things done.

I have read or listened to every book up to snuff ( have not finished it or anything after it. Loved them all. I am currently listening to the 9th book of backyard starship and "moist" has a very comedic meaning in them. Chuckled the first time you said it

ALL OF THEM?!?! So stoked!! I actually found this channel looking for videos about Discworld and found yout Where To Start video. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on each City Watch book and.. well, the rest of them too! PS Hugh Laurie should be Wilikins in an adaptation.

I was lucky enough to get started with Small Gods because it was the only fantasy book in the library one day, and it was an excellent intro to Pratchett's style and wonderful sense of humor. I agree that Going Postal works as a gateway book for many of the same reasons, but since it's further in the timeline, there are a lot of spoilers that make Guards, Guards for example, a little less enjoyable. Thank you for digging into Sir Terry's work! Love the video.
